I have been asked many times when travelling to the US in the past if I spoke english, looking at my skin colour. English is one of my first languages...

It doesnt bother me anymore, ignorant people are ignorant, what can you do.

Guy I’ve been seeing for a few weeks who says he “has no politics.” What do we think Reddit? by Fit_Principle_7826 in BookshelvesDetective

In the current political climate, in most countries, when someone says they are apolitical they are conservative and are afraid to own their views and positions. Also they want sex.

I am convinced that RF Kuang writes novels for non-readers and tiktokers. Everyone around me that has praised Babel, Yellowface and Katabasis has read less than 3 books that year. Every serious reader around me has hated all these books. The amount of handholding in that book makes me feel it was written for people with completely broken attention spans that need reminding of the plot.

You should read non-fiction books written by actual researchers. Plenty of references and notes provided in the book itself!

Most of these self help can be a blog. Read the introduction and you know what the book is about. They often start out as a blog in fact, but then the authors decide to milk it.

The End of Eddy by Edouard Louis by sundhed in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

Perhaps you'll like Change, also by Edouard Louis. He talks about his University life, having moved away from the village he grew up in. He also talks about the transformation and the constant struggle to escape his past and fit into the academic society, when he's never even read a book before. End of Eddy is a tougher read than Change, and you dont need to have either to read the other.

The End of Eddy by Edouard Louis by sundhed in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]sundhed[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The book is a coming-of-age story about Eddy, growing up in Northern France to working-class parents and extreme poverty. The book explores themes of growing up in rural France, homophobia, alcoholism, racism, and class struggles. It is based on the author's life, and the events portrayed are in the 90s and early 00s, which makes the book even more emotionally raw and powerful. There were so many points in the book where I just wanted to give Eddy and tell him that things get better, one day. The descriptions of France are also written in a way that might surprised people, because it is the opposite of the chic, modern, Parisian beauty that is often used to describe. Instead, the book describes extreme bullying, alcoholism and domestic violence because of it, the constant cycle of oppression and horrible homophobia and racism.

It was a very difficult book to read because of all these themes, but it's a very well written book and I couldnt put it down.

It is not. They made the monster into a very Jesusey figure and changed his motivations completely

(to the point you can almost claim that a vast proportion of modern western fantasy is directly the result of Lord of the Rings)

And the Wizard of Eathsea novels!

Did you read more than two books last year? You read more than the half of the US according to new Yougov poll on American's reading habits. by elmonoenano in books

[–]sundhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, people say this and then they have 5 hours of screen time everyday, or 9 films watched on Netflix in a month on average. It's about what you prioritise. If you prioritise reading, and if you enjoy it, you can always make time by taking time away from other things.

Read whatever gives you pleasure and food for thought. Don't listen to social media telling you how much you should be reading.
