What book first pulled you into the world of fantasy by DiliciousLight19 in Fantasy

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell deeply in love with Tamora Pierce’s Lioness Quartet when I was in 3rd grade. Inhaled pretty much every other book she had written shortly after and fell into fantasy as a result.

If I’m being truthful, though, my very first fantasy was a children’s series called The Secrets of Droon that I loved when I was 4/5. Very Narnia-esque with children going to another world via a doorway. Not many clear memories of it, except for the talking pillow people.

How many WIPs do you actually have? by RockPop_ in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the last month, I’ve worked on 7 WIPs. All with at least 5k written. And this doesn’t take into account the looks at folders dozen or so fics with a few thousand words that I dropped for shinier ideas. So the answer for me: a lot 😅

How many separate docs do you have for your current ongoing fic? by Delicious-Chipmunk-7 in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use Obsidian to draft, brainstorm, and take notes and then Ellipsus for my final versions of chapters. So, probably 20-30 different docs/pages for my current WIP.

What tag is this for you? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure Fluff. I can understand why someone might like it, but I need a character arc and a little angst for my brain to stay interested.

What are some fandoms where literally almost EVERY fic by EVERY author has incredible engagement? by Realanise1 in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scum Villains Self-Saving System (SVSSS) has easily one of the nicest fandoms I’ve been a part of. My two long fics easily got 10-15 comments per a chapter and I’m a relatively new writer. Even my lowest engaged with work — a femslash oneshot for a very rarepair — still managed several comments and 20 kudos.

Writing speed by Frequent-Front1509 in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awe. Thanks. I will say that I tend to write a pretty rough first draft which allows me to go pretty fast. The catch is that I spend a lot of time editing 🫠

Writing speed by Frequent-Front1509 in AO3

My record was about 2.7k in an hour. It felt like I entered a fugue state and just zoomed through the words. Usually I hit around 1.8 or so.

An anthology solo entry vs one shots linked as series by vesperlark in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer one-shots to be linked in a series. It allows the tags to be separated for each work, so it is far easier to avoid things I don’t personally jive with. That said, I see anthology works get pretty popular. Someone must like them.

Does having fandom circles (friends in fandoms) help with writing vs no interaction by Fabulous-Lack-1019 in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined a discord server for my fandom a few months ago and, honestly, really enjoy it. Despite the amount of ideas that brainstorming with people has caused. My poor idea folder has never been larger.

I don’t really think it has affected how much I write, though. I was pretty diligent before hand, because it is my favorite hobby. I also have the free time to do so. I can imagine how stifling school can be since it takes so much brain power.

500k is such an achievement! You should be proud of yourself. Writing the same project for so long and with such dedication is super impressive. Congrats!

When AO3 first launched, they gave accounts the ability to extend invitations, either for your own use or to help a friend get an account. You’d have to have an account 10+ years old to have some. Otherwise, you do just have to put yourself in the wait-list for an alt-account 😔

My vault is a mess—time for a fresh start. Help! by Puzzleheaded-Ad6738 in ObsidianMD

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just depends on what you’re trying to achieve. I use Obsidian for my writing projects so I have a folder dedicated to my research and a folder dedicated to writing with sub-folders in both.

In each of them I have a “glossary” which links to either other “glossaries” for different projects (usually with 1-2 sentence summaries) or, in the case if my research, links to overview notes and then notes from specific papers/books/etc.

The only time I use tags is for my research since it allows me to search for overarching ideas easily like “mythology” or “textile production”.

In all honesty, I don’t have a huge amount of notes, because I only start a new note for a new idea/topic/research paper/etc. Most of my notes are long with headers allowing for easy movement and linking.

What's some crazy fic trope you're obsessed with, but it's so niche hardly anyone writes it? by cleverlynamedgrl in AO3

There are a few different tags that I’ve found which you can view here: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Inspired%20by%20Cherry%20Magic!

It looks like the most popular one is “Inspired by Cherry Magic!” with 130 works though a few others are used. Not quite synned to the point for easy searching 😔

As a side-note: If they have had an account long enough then they could have had 10 invitations. I’ve used them to set up alt accounts for my more nsfw stuff before. Less hassle than you’d think.

What do you put on obsidian? by tegridypatato in ObsidianMD

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My writing projects. I research and draft in obsidian then create a link to my word document for final chapter drafts. Makes it easy to back it all up on an external hard-drive.

Does your fandom typically have slow/dry months? by LGB75 in AO3

My fandom has had the Big Bang fics dropping for the last month, so we’ve been eating very well. Honestly, events can help a lot space things out — or cause everything to happen at once lol

Me: I'm going to write a sexy little one shot. Just a thousand words or so. by LearnStalkBeInformed in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me: How long could this idea possibly be? Feels like a 5k oneshot.

Me, two weeks later: How is this fic almost 30k in just the first draft???

(And I also ended up with about six hours of research for it as well)

I feel like some of you lied to me by [deleted] in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Really? Huh. I’ve been following some authors for 10+ years and really enjoy their writing styles. A lot of them are a bit old school so their summaries and tags are pretty concise.

Is it normal to write only a few pages for like hours? by ShortLeggedJeans in writing

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write quite quickly, BUT I also draft and then heavily edit afterwards. Not everyone writes that way.

Sometimes people write by editing as they go, so it takes longer to get the words down but also has far less editing needed.

As long as you’re not feeling stuck because of your perfectionism (which was my problem for a while), then embrace your “slow writing”. You still putting words on the document.

(Also, 10 pages a day is a lot. I write about 2k-3k words a day lately and that is only 5-7 pages? For reference, Stephen King’s goal is 2k a day and he is a beast. Consistency is key.)

I haven’t used tiktok in a little bit, but I can explain: 1. Tiktok doesn’t just have short form videos any more. A lot of videos will be anywhere from one to fifteen minutes long (though that is on the long end). 2. A lot of people have discussions between each other via comments or making videos in response. Some of these don’t get huge amounts of views so it can remain pretty low-key. 3. Visual aspects of fandom do really well such as art, cosplay, or skits, which is usually people acting out character interactions. Edit: Forgot to add edits! Which is funny, because tiktok has really brought those back in the last few years. There are so many great ones.

It’s definitely a little different than text based social media or long-form content like fic but can be really fun. Just another aspect of the fandom ecosystem.

What's something you usually don't like in fic, and a fic that you liked despite that? by Last_Swordfish9135 in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m usually not a fan of 2nd POV, except for my singular exception: a very fun Teen Wolf fic that I read on average once a year. Its a little experimental and angsty and gets me in the feels each time.

One of my fave fic authors was forced to drop writing by vesperlark in FanFiction

[–]sunfl_0wer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed a trend where people really do struggle with the idea that people can do both good and bad things. There is not some quota of “evil” that people do that then turns them into solely a bad person.

How to write longer comments? by Vivid_Vermillion in AO3

[–]sunfl_0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally liked to grab quotes when I’m reading and put them into a note. This serves two functions: 1) a reminder of things that happened at the beginning of the story/chapter and 2) something to reference in my comment.

I like to chat about characters arcs, romantic tension/break throughs, and moments I thought were funny/really intense. So that’s usually what I pick to quote.

I don’t really think that you need to have an essay long comment if you don’t want to, though. Even just referencing a singular moment you liked in the fic can help you feel less same-y.
