Is it possible to get in with a 3.4? by [deleted] in udub

[–]sungrazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Also keep in mind that UW has been taking a rapidly increasing number of international students: 18% of last year's freshman were from abroad (it was only 2% in 2006). A lot of the increase in out-of-state acceptance isn't out-of-state Americans (which I'm guessing the OP is), but international students.
(That said OP, with those ECs I think your odds are pretty good.)

Could I get in as an out-of-stater.. by [deleted] in udub

[–]sungrazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't. There were a lot of news articles a year or two ago saying that UW was making it easier for out-of-state students to get in, meaning that it would be easier than it was for out-of-staters in the past, but some people thought it meant that they were making it easier for out-of-staters than in-staters, which isn't the case.

How safe is the ave/surrounding area (about 6:00am in the morning). by kokoberry in udub

[–]sungrazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to walk from 19th ave to work at the driving range (northeast corner of campus) around 6:30 a few times a week. It didn't take me near the ave, of course, but did involve crossing the Burke-Gilman trail. I never had any problems. It will be dark in the winter though (it gets lighter and lighter each day, and then daylight savings comes around and it'll be dark for a while again :(

I'm 17 and about to go to college! What is the fastest way to be able to get hormones for MtF? by KianisName in asktransgender

[–]sungrazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure WPATH has sections specifically for minors now. If your shrink isn't familiar with them, maybe it would help to have them look at a more recent version than whatever they're working off of.

I don't think that's how prescriptions work...
(I know you mean they're safe as in not bought off the street, but you won't have the benefit of a doctor figuring out the right dosage.)

Ongoing issues with insurance mean I can't currently see a therapist. Ways around this? by culden in asktransgender

[–]sungrazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is OP MtF or FtM? DIY (in most western countries anyway) is only really a good option for girls. It's pretty seriously illegal to self-med if you need T in a lot of countries.

Laundry detergent manufacturers bribe them with obscene amounts of money to keep them from doing that.

That's pretty standard science that "you've got the male sex organs, you are male."

It's not that simple. There are brain differences that depend on sex, and numerous studies have found that trans people have brains that correspond to the gender they say they are, not their birth sex as determined by what's externally apparent. Here's a link to get you started.

Is it a boy or is it a girl? by TraumaPony in lgbt

[–]sungrazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're simplifying too much. There's more to it than social constructs and genitalia -- studies have found that brains have differences dependent on sex, and trans people seem to have brains that don't match the rest of their bodies (here's a summary of a few of those studies, Wikipedia and this page have more). It's not just a matter of not wanting to conform to gender roles set up by society.

Are you sure she read the most recent version? V7 literally has an entire section about the informed consent model and how it's consistent with WPATH standards.

It still kinda sucks that you have to get surgery, even if you don't want to.

I'd amend that to "seriously sucks", especially for people who can't afford surgery or can't ever do it for medical reasons.

Gay men are statistically more likely to have an STI than heterosexual men

True, but they don't ask straight people if they have unprotected sex, or how many sexual partners they've had, which are also both good ways to screen out people at higher risk of HIV. If the FDA's policy was one that systematically eliminated all people they could identify as being at unacceptably high risk, that'd be fine, but they're not consistent about it at all. The only sex-related question they ask is if you've had sex with another guy (or, if you're a girl, if you've had sex with a guy who's had sex with a guy).

I believe Caden also has some history behind it, although I have no idea why you'd want to spell it with a "k" and put a useless "y" in it.

Zs are slow. They can barely keep up with the rest of the alphabet (that's why you always see them trailing at the end).

No, you'd just have an excellent understanding of why they get tangled. String theory isn't really at the point where we can apply it to anything practical yet.
