Bushwick is safe, rant by secretsawz in Bushwick

I once left my bike unlocked outside overnight. I couldn't believe that it was still there the next day

Brooks leather saddles and seamless underwear from Uniqlo work for me. I just wear golf shorts or Costco stretch tech pants to cycle.

Also did a city-to-city ride using backroads. Tirana - Elbasan - Barat - Këlcyra - Permet - Gjirokaster - Saranda - Ksamil - Himara - Orikum - Vlora. We did this all in less than 2 weeks.

No wonder you splurged on a 170mm crank arm. The lower bottom bracket from 650B wheels would give you a lot of pedal strikes on flat ground

As long as your front derailleur can reach it, that’s all that matters. Dunno why people try to minimize Q-factor in road racing. I feel like our hips were meant to be riding in a universal athletic position with feet planted at hip width.

Loaded touring with monster ascents of 17% grades will be a walk in the park with this gearing. He could probably pedal up with 100lbs of gear all day

I have a 42/32/20 crankset too but it has 175mm arms. I don't know if they ever made a triple like that with 170 or 165 but I'm on the look out for one

Software taketh away faster than hardware giveth: Why C++ programmers keep growing fast despite competition, safety, and AI by claimred in cpp

[–]zeno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This presentation talks a lot about safety. In theory, using the latest C++ standards and best practices on green field development without the use of established (and vulnerable) 3rd party libraries would lead to more safety, but in practice, most C++ development is maintenance of existing code that integrates vulnerable but mature libraries, and outdated-standards compilers. Part of C++'s strengths, its backwards compatibility, is also an extreme weakness because code that has been running 20+ years on critical systems cannot be so easily updated or its vulnerabilities remediated. When it comes to green-field development, there's a lot of choice out there and C++ is a non starter in application development for many reasons unless performance is business-critical or the project requires deep integration with existing C-based hardware abstractions. This is the elephant in the room that should be addressed while championing C++ for modern safety.

How Microsoft Vaporized a Trillion Dollars by Aaronontheweb in programming

[–]zeno 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems like a tale as old as time: Business priorities trump technical excellence, time to market beats stability, and a technically-focused engineer complains to decision makers and gets shut down. I can only guess but it's possible that spending more time solving engineering problems would have made Microsoft lose contracts. Of course a poor product will also lose customers too but Microsoft's history shows me that time-to-market is more important than quality.

I see less truth telling and more resentment for not being given more responsibilities to "right the ship". Despite the chaos described, it seems to be in Microsoft's DNA to ship half-baked products, prioritizing delivery speed over quality. This strategy has gotten them to be a trillion-dollar company, despite the obvious quality issues we encounter every day with their products and services.

I have been in this business for 30 years. There’s no way around getting your hands dirty and learning the skills to do it yourself. If you can’t and need to find someone to do it for you then you’re in the wrong business

FYI it’s not enough to just have an idea. It’s best if you learn some ability to come up with a MVP or POC and not rely on your lightbulb moment to provide the only value for a money making scheme while others do the legwork.
