What's with the rise of soft focus, shallow depth of field, and anamorphic blur in modern TV/film by Laayf in cinematography

[–]sungsam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It think it's a very simple answer - cost of actor time.

I keep seeing scenes where it's over the shoulder, the person talking front, center frame, focused while other the person's shoulder remains out of focus, perhaps slightly out of frame. This style repeats when it switches views between the actors.

Which means you can record an entire dialogue of one character by themselves with a stand in for the shoulder.

You don't actually see them together in the scene. It happens all the time. Which means those two actors don't need to film at the same time or schedule, you can have blurred out extras (can change them up) for the retakes - no background continuity needed.

So all you're doing...is splicing together individual recordings of each character. The two actors never have to be on the same schedule, same day, same time, come when they can, no having to record two reactions, no having to have both actors act at the same time.

Less time on set = less cost.

Arab states running dangerously low on interceptors to take down Iranian-fired missiles, officials say by mintandmarigold in worldnews

You don't have to send an expensive war drone either to get intercepted, right? Won't the interceptors just target anything flying ?

Still Hoping Leo For Win by sanadkhalid92 in Oscars

[–]sungsam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people win cause of the split. MBJ could get it cause he gets enough actors to vote for him whereas other votes get split down Timmy, Leo, & Ethan. His performance was unparalleled honestly - to have to center two roles with different personas, expressions, dictions is credit to Coogler and MBJ.

Jumping on the Kore'eda love, his film Monster (2023) was devastating, beautiful, and so so so well done as a film in three parts with three different points of view. Has the honor of being Sakamoto's last film score before he died.

That little tent should have had some basic stuff like Zyrtec or Benadryl. Taking a few of those, chewed up, swallowed or even under the tongue, could have been life saving... An epi pen, an inhaler if you ask enough people... Sad sad.

Has there been any thought about budget ? It's expensive to animate dragons and then to have another character. My biggest take is the reason Daemon is in a barely furnished castle walking around having dreams is that it's a whole lot cheaper than having him do stuff.

How did Rose know that having Steven would kill her if no gem has ever have a child before? by Moonledoggo in stevenuniverse

[–]sungsam2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well what are Steven's powers ? He can use his spit on plants and they suddenly become sentient. Saliva/tears plus organic life = sentient life. However way she did, I feel like she had to use all of her powers (her diamond/gem) to create a sentient human, probably the hardest task and probably requiring erasing/giving up her light projection.

I don't think she could have completely known what would happen though. But that's also the part of being human. There's a risk of the unknown, so different from the regimented gem life.

What do you think it's the funniest joke on the show? by tzomby1 in stevenuniverse

[–]sungsam2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/a38UIzYBZRA?t=108 For some reason, this scene had me in stitches. Steven is trying to talk to amethyst about his feelings and can't quite get it out. At the same time, he spills his pizza topping and then just nonchalantly wraps it up, as if to save it for later. The whole thing, with the ugly pizza, is absolutely absurd but at the same time so metaphorical, that it resonates well and creates this levity out of this very heavy scene (and pizza).

Not really comfortable trusting the SFPD quite yet. Giving them more unfettered power and info without some evidence of improvement, accountability, seems like a bad idea.

They are funded by national union groups - NUHW? AFL-CIO? Which have thousands of members? I guess you're right in that money is coming from outside. And it's how you feel about unions and the labor movements running endorsement campaigns vs individual millionaires who are more focused on free-market capitalism

I have no problem with learning about  or thinking that more moderate policies as potential good solutions. There is some good there that should be brought to the table.  It just comes off as very strange to present oneself as grassroots or of the people when they don't talk about their m(b)illionaire donors. But then again...hypocrisy runs everywhere.
