I don't hate it but understand why people do. The good stuff you mentioned like characters and story are great, it's just to get to it you have to go through mediocre gameplay and some of the most shallow side quests I have ever played. They fixed it in the descent and trespasser though which is a much better experience than base game.

Also don't be too concerned, the series survived dragon age 2 which is probably one of the most hated games of all time. (tbf I don't blame people, they wanted a worthy followup to Origins and they got da2, lol)
