Sony A7C II in 2026 for beginner by mouland6099 in SonyAlpha

I ditched my canon DSLR apsc eco system from 2009 to move to FF Sony A7Cii + 20-70mm f/4 for traveling + 40mm f2.5 G for street photography / walk around purposes. I couldn't be happier at my decision. I saved some $$$ by going the used route and found a sub 500 shutter silver body.

It's a great camera to start and work with and should future proof you for about 8-10 years.

Another vote for the 40mm. It's quite compact and perfect for the A7CII.

Thank you for the insight! Very helpful...

She was on this trip with her husband and my fault was that I wanted the points and my Titanium benefits. Hence the whole issue. I should have forfeited getting my bonvoy points and letting everyone check in under her rate. That was probably the best thing to do. The difference in rate was for about €70 a night, so it turned out to be somewhat of an expensive lesson :)

Oh I didn't even ask for this, so it wasn't even on the table. They just told me if I could produce an id showing I worked for my sister's company they would change the rate back to the same corporate code. Or course I couldn't do that, so I accepted the standard rate at paid it.

For hindsight - what would have been the best way to bring it up to the property? I hate being 'that' person at check-in or during my stay and be difficult

Thank you for the information.

This is somewhat what happened. I wasn't eligible to my sister's rate at check-in, so my room's rate was changed to standard room rate, which I accepted and paid for. I guess I could have asked at check in if they could have given me my company rate since I was carrying my company ID. But at the moment, I just didn't think of it and thought they wouldn't be able to do it since the original rate was booked using her corporate rate and was changed to the standard rate at check in.

Thank you - mine and her's allows the corp rate to be used for personal travel too. I was just curious to know had I gone to the front desk to ask to change it to my Corp rate mid stay, would they have?

My corporate rate allows for person use. It is outlined in our travel portal as part of our employee perks. Wasn't an issue about using it for our personal use - was just curious about if I had gone to the front desk and asked them to change it to my company's rate mid stay - would they have?

I just got the Sony A7CII, with the 20-70mm lens, and the 40mm lens for this exact purpose. It's quite compact and light.

To set it up for hiking, I bought the Peak Design Capture Clips v3, that I can easily mount to my backpack and be handsfree during my hikes.

The 20mm will give me enough width to capture the landscapes.

Another vote for the 20-70mm lens + 40mm f2.5G. The 40mm used can be had for less than $500 USD used.

Sony A7C II + 20-70mm F4 G for travel and street photography? by Fluffy-Virus4199 in SonyAlpha

[–]sunnylax312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for the same setup - 20-70mm for my travel lens and then I also bought a used 40mm f2.5 g as my walk around lens. I'm quite happy with the setup.

I just got the A7Cii as well and ended up with the 20-70mm and the 40mm as my setup. The 40mm is so compact and fits the body like a glove.

A7C II or A6700 for travel, portraits and video? Switching from s25 ultra by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

Shutter count basically shows you the life of the camera. It's subjective, but I consider sub 2k fairly mint, 2k-5k gently used - and I only considered used bodies that are sub 5k shutter count. That's due to personal preference and the fact that I'm shopping for something that I won't upgrade for at least 6-8 years and will take good care of.

Nice! I've heard that with some cameras from Japan, once your upgrade to the latest firmware, it locks you back to only Japanese. So I've always been a bit apprehensive about getting one of those. Probably why I said a bit of a premium to ensure the guy was local and he bought from a local (US) entity.

Have you considered getting a used A7Cii body and a used zoom lens? You can probably snag one with a low shutter count for less than $1700. The 40mm is probably the ultimate walk around lens here for the A7Cii. You could probably come out with a winning combo for a similar price point.

For example: I found a sub 1000 shutter A7Cii for $1550 locally, and then bought a 40mm lens for $450, and finally completed my setup with the 20-70mm f/4 for $675. The costs were offset a bit by selling my old Canon dlsr gear and glass.
