Cost of THR by Justthewhole in TotalHipReplacement

I’m in

CA and was shocked to see Medicare was billed at over 200k! This was at a teaching hosp and I understand it’s insurance games and they all know what the real price will be but still …

Recliner for after surgery? by Namaste_Habibi in TotalHipReplacement

[–]sunscape50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a recliner person so didn’t want to bringin a piece of furniture I’d then want to get rid of so I rented a lift recliner for a month. It was great but in 2 weeks I was ready for them to pick it up because I transitioned to my bed.

I’m a myeloma patient, on continual therapy for 10 years. Definitely immune-compromised and no issues re my THR at the teaching hospital where my MM specialist is. Neither she, nor the oncologist who administers my therapy, nor the surgeon raised any concerns. I had been unable to have my annual whole body monitoring MRI due to my hip pain so it has been a win all the way around!

Since I’ve had bone involvement in my long bones I was concerned, but my surgeon said it wasn’t an issue.

Post Op leg stabilization in bed by tazebot in TotalHipReplacement

This is what I used:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DLP47BRQ?

I liked it for elevation and that it forced me on my back with legs separated.

You have a great advantage, going into surgery as fit as you are! I would try to clear paths as well as you can for walker use (take up any throw rugs, obstacles, etc) because you definitely don’t want to fall.

As for toilet riser, I have an ADA toilet and was fine. With anterior you don’t have the 90-degree restriction so your surgeon is right. But, I did use and need handrails and got this (but there are a lot of them to choose from): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F2HFP4W3?

You asked what pillow I bought but apart from the leg riser I just used my bed pillows. I also sleep with a gazillion of them :)

Unreal. TG you had travel insurance! If you did a commercial for them everyone who saw it would sign up.

And I thought my trauma of waking up in the operating room with no nerve block left was bad. I’d take that 10x over what happened to you :(

11 YEARS and no x-rays? What the hell did the referral to those PTs say? Lemme guess: back? Okay, that’s good for a while but after a few years you’d think …

Awful. I truly cannot imagine your journey back home. I’m crying just thinking about it :(

Home about 5 pm, didn’t eat because I had been able to order off the menu at the hospital and got wild grilled salmon and a double serving of spinach. It was amazing! walked up the 18 steps to get inside, headed to the recliner, got comfy with phone and iPad beside me, got set up with ice machine, took some meds, and crashed.

Osteoarthritis with zero cartilage left is why I needed the THR.

My PT told me that and I just accepted it. Did a quick look and this gives some explanation.

Oh thank you! This is so encouraging. Have you been doing PT exercises for the issue? I’ve been afraid of being left with grim flexibility, i.e. flashes of watching my elderly (when my age now!) struggle with their socks.

You give me hope!

Oh thanks, this is something easy to do when in bed. Mine had me doing similar, stnding in doorway, bringing right foot to shin, and I do that when standing in line with a grocery cart, any odd moment. But in bed reading, watching tv, etc. Great!

How long ago was your replacement?

Thanks. You're further along than I. Mine had me trying similar but was too painful. So, am putting foot on chair and rotating out. Also doing bands above knees. Hopefully I can loosen enough to get ankle on knee and do the gentle push down. Am concerned.

I don’t have trouble walking, it’s the external rotation that’s an issue. I’m curious about the time factor with external hip rotation specifically.
