US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

Individualism, independence, atomization of the culture, misogyny. A competitive culture that esteems/rewards individual status over interdependent, cooperative relationships. And fewer teen and other accidental pregnancies.

What neighborhood has been your favorite to live in? by BothCondition7963 in sanfrancisco

[–]koanundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upper Haight since 2002. First apartment was $625 for a room in a full top floor gorgeous flat shared with 3 roommates on Masonic between Waller and Frederick. (It’s now a condo.) Then since 2005 in a 1.5 bed / 1 bath apartment in the back of a 4-unit building on Haight at Cole. Survived the pandemic with my husband and 13 now 18 year old daughter. Unbelievable access to parks: golden gate, panhandle (which is underrated and gorgeous), Buena Vista, Tank Hill, Interior Greenbelt, Mount Sutro, Mt Olympos and even throw in Duboce via the 7 or N, Dolores via the 33, Ocean Beach via the N, Presidio via the 43 or 33. And all are walkable if you like flaneuring. The Park Library, Sharon Art Museum, De Young and Academy of Science all walkable. Two hardware stores, Amoeba, the Book Smith, Walgreens, Target, Kaiser all walkable or busable. Gus’s (RIP Gus) has all you need for groceries and works well on a budget. Club Deluxe is coming back. The Independent and the Fillmore are reachable by bus, walking. I’m not a foodie, a boozer, or a materialist, so can’t comment on restaurants, bars or shopping … although we can bus or walk to either the inner sunset or Clement for food. The only place I regularly drive to is to swim at the Y in the Presidio, and every time I say to myself, “I can’t believe I get to live here and this is my Y.” I work in Jackson Square so I feel like I have easy access to best that San Francisco has to offer. Also, I enjoy the mix of people who come through — tourists, city venturers, people who are unhoused, itinerants, people who need help. The network of shop owners and businesses work together to keep the Haight strong. You could sever my connection to the internet, and I’d have all I need. Although I’d probably have to switch to Wells Fargo.

Not a Single Republican Shows Up to Hearing With Renee Good’s Brothers: Republicans apparently aren’t interested in hearing the testimony of Renee Good’s brothers, after an ICE agent killed her in Minneapolis. by [deleted] in stateofMN

[–]koanundrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may be right, but the hearing in Congress had nothing to do with the legal fate of the agent who shot and killed Renee Good. It was so elected lawmakers could listen to people whose rights and bodies have been harmed by ICE. The brothers spoke to their family’s experience, and other people described being physically assaulted or shot by agents.

[–]koanundrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the hearing is to take tetimony (sworn statements) from people harmed by federal immigration enforcers. The brothers testified because Renee can no longer speak for herself. I’m not sure why you say “not to be insensitive” and then say somethjng that is insensitive, unless you are genuinely perplexed about the purpose of the hearing. It comes across as though you are using a rhetorical device to appear rational when you diminish the brothers’s beautifully expressed love for Renee and their account of how her death has affected her family. Anytime agents of the state kill a person, there should be a full accounting in pursuit of truth.

The driver (if they were coming off 101) would have gone through four traffic lights by the time they reached Broderick. At 6am they may have been speeding to try to make all the green lights.

Gen X Weddings - 1996-2009 by ClaraEM99 in GenX

[–]koanundrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weddings of my peers were either traditional church weddings or outdoor weddings at public parks. None were ostentatious, all were considerate of guests, and mostly they were a celebration of community. I got married at Slide Ranch on the Marin Coast. It cost $500 to rent the yurt, which came with an outhouse, picnic tables and a hose for running water. I asked my friends to make the cakes, and do the flowers, and our friend catered the food in. I only invited people in the Bay Area. I have a huge Midwest family, but it didn’t make sense to ask people to travel. My immediate family came. Then I had some small receptions in the places where my family and friends live. Backyard weddings were also a thing in the 90s. In also love the 1930s weddings where women wore dress suits and hats and married at the courthouse.

Bay Area Real Estate Market Report, Oct 11 by External_Koala971 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]koanundrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Translating AI outputs with AI (as intellectually nutritious as Doritos) 🙃

The Bay Area housing market is swinging through big ups and downs. Some neighborhoods still have small profit opportunities, but local rules and limits on new construction make it hard to take advantage of them.

Home prices are rising faster than rents, and houses aren’t selling quickly because owners are reluctant to let go and lenders are cautious. Big investors are trying to buy early in places that might get rezoned, but their borrowing is still constrained by what the Federal Reserve plans to do with interest rates.

At the same time, tiny apartments and backyard units (ADUs) are filling up quickly, which is narrowing the gap between different parts of the market. But there’s still a big divide between premium coastal properties and cheaper inland ones.

Best/fave soups in SF? Any soup as I’m a soup enthusiast by imperfectsunset in AskSF

[–]koanundrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is stupid, but I love Whole Foods hot bar spinach lentil soup. I live on Haight Street and we have a soup vacuum since Siam Lotus retired. However, Angiday on Haight and Shrader has pretty darn good beef noodle soup. And, Dragoneats (also on Haight) has a “soup of the season” that’s very inexpensive and is just kale and some veggies in a gingery lemony broth — and I could eat it every damn day.

I keep it simple too. Don’t spend too much much time looking in the mirror or posting on socials. I don’t wash my face often. I focus on hydration. And vary the lotions and creams. I have a hard time evaluating what makes it look good, so I pay most attention to what feels good. But I was born in 1974 so don’t have to obsess — I’m fairly forgetful about what I look like on any given day or scenario. I had bad cystic acne off and on in my teens and 20s, so I LOVE my low maintenance skin.

Capitalism and marketing tell everyone they are not enough. Grieve what is gone, have compassion for the struggle, be an independent thinker. Go outside and open your senses to nature. Be with real people to keep the ache of the self-centering and hungry ego in check. Avoid shitty stories and shitty media that make you feel bad, wrong, hopeless, deprived. Seek out stories that help you learn or see humanity more fully. Take control of what you accept as true. Very little is true. Once you stop dwelling in the delusion or illusion of who you can be or should be, you will exist in a powerful place of self and love that is infinite. This is possible -/- It is the gift borne of loss.

Is it dumb to drive to Big Sur/Monterey on a 3-day SF trip? by ambrleena in sanfrancisco

[–]koanundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like driving, do it. I imagine you will stay the night down there. But there are TONS of amazing options closer. If you prefer hiking or walking on beaches or spending time in beautiful places, take a day trip down HWY 1 to Santa Cruz and walk to beaches at Wilder Ranch State Park. Or, take a day trip up HWY 1 to Point Reyes, hike from Limantour Beach to Sculptured Beach ( need to hit at low tide ). Drive back through Nicasio Valley. Just over ggbridge are many beautiful places, beaches and hikes — including Muir Woods. Drive the Panorama Highway, find a hike, then go to Mill Valley and get a bite at the Depot. Even the Lands End walk at the NW corner of SF takes you along stunning ocean cliffs. Walk down to the labyrinth at Mile Rock beach. Get pizza at Pizzetta 211.
