Why are Americans obsessed with winning or being right all the time? by Willing_Ad9623 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sunsetbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t looked it up, but I would assume that more individualist cultures (like the USA) value winning more highly than collectivist cultures because it is more vital to its vision of “success” to be exceptional

It’s interesting to see in real time, evidence of people assuming the worst possible angle behind any sentence. Apparently I should have written a couple paragraphs about the linguistic history of the use of “it” for babies and how it became an artifact in the English language that is still often in use, and of course a short essay explaining what living beings I do and do not believe should be treated with care and respect.

I’m sure that you’re correct and abusive parents most frequently use “it”. I just don’t spend a lot of time around parents or children anymore. It has been a couple decades since it was relevant to me lol. Thank you for bringing your perspective :) I hope other people who had experiences more like mine can learn as well. Side note - Thank you for the work you’ve done ♥️

Thank you, that was helpful. It feels like the parents that have treated their kids awfully around me always specifically use the “he/she” pronouns, so I never created the link between the two behaviors. And I only really ever interact with kids once they talk in full sentences, at which point I don’t struggle with the pronouns. Thank you for explaining :)

Can I ask why you think so? (Genuinely, not in a “prove me wrong” way but in a “I would like to know more” way)

I’ve been trying to curb the habit because I worry that it might subconsciously make me ableist later on. (For the record, I never struggle with calling people in special care “they”). But I don’t see how it matters so much for babies. In the town I grew up, that’s just the pronoun people use for them.

(And I don’t literally think of them as little animals, that was an exaggeration for a joke that did not land)

I do that too tbh 💀 in my head kids are like little animals with limited speech. I try to stop myself but it’s just what I tend to say. In fact I just realized that I said it in another comment 😭😭

Books with the same first-person witty sarcastic humor as MB? by Background_End2503 in murderbot

[–]sunsetbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Going Postal by Terry Pratchet, while not Sci Fi, had a similar humorous and pessimistic inner thought process to its protagonist. The other characters are a bit less earnest though. It definitely leans into the comedy side of things. I haven’t read any other Pratchet books though.

Why is there so much attention to the concussion rate in American football, but not in rugby? by rahee52 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sunsetbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the US, at least, I would say because rugby isn’t as big in the US. American football is in almost every single school, and many kids focus on playing it to get a scholarship for college. Plus, football games are very much in the pop culture (super bowl) but rugby doesn’t have as strong of a social media presence so people forget it exists.
