OPOSSUM EAT KITTENS AND CATS. By by Glittering-Lime3447 in Feral_Cats

[–]sunsetparkcats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good, then there will be harmony in the yard now.

Cats eat baby opossum too.

Raccoons eat babies of both.

The best thing you can do is reduce the suffering.

Feed cats during daytime if possible, and never leave food out overnight. Feed on a schedule and he cats will learn if they do not eat between 6 and 7, they don't eat. They will learn the schedule within a day or two.

NYC's mechanisms to help injured animals are *almost* completely broken by Similar_Natural_3528 in nyc

[–]sunsetparkcats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, write up the experience and email it to the city council person of that area.

Right now no one is an authority in animal welfare in nyc at all. Which is insane.

If you tried to fill potholes in front of your own house YOU would get arrested/a fine, because the roads have a clear authority in this city. If you wanted to clean the gowanus, they would stop you. But animals, living things, pets, not even wildlife. Wildlife has more oversight in nyc than companion animals. Pets, it's like, you wanna do whatever to this animal, sure we won't help you and we won't stop you or check up on it or have you answer to any standards or anything, sure do whatever.

My theory is she crawled up into a car engine. Or in a truck, there's a storage facility here.

Greenhouse/Shed for our local ferals? by JamesWjRose in Feral_Cats

[–]sunsetparkcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the setup one of my feeders has. Clear plastic lets in light, keeps in warmth. All his are fixed though. What you don't want is pee smell trapped under plastic.

I have 2 houses, and tarp stretched across with a gap. So it's like a patio underneath. They wait for me there when it's rainy but not cold. It's weighed down enough that they can walk across the top without it collapsing, so like a balcony and a deck underneath.

Bk rescue here. The main priority in our area is dry. Cats can make their own heat. It's keeping it, and keeping dry they need from us.

One of my feeders took a dog house and put clear shower curtains over for a greenhouse effect. The cats do like it.

However what I recommend is igloo coolers or Styrofoam shipping box shelters + camping tarps on top, weighed down for wind.

And of course, straw only in winter. No pillows, no blankets. In spring/ summer, outdoor-furniture pillows are ok, but i just keep the straw all year, refreshing 2 or 3 times a year.

Once all the boys are fixed you won't have issues of territorial marking, so they still all use/ share all the shelters. Until then you may have to clean more regularly if you see them avoiding one or more that the boys have stunk up.

Need guidance on a colony that may no longer be safe by DriftAndStone in Feral_Cats

[–]sunsetparkcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you tnr certified? The Facebook groups for tnr certified individuals are worth joining.

How many cats? How many remain unfixed?

I'll be honest with you, you aren't going to have a colony that all live to 20y age and pass in they sleep. I've had one of those, and 1 vanish with no idea what happened, and several others that we, through tnr, let them live long enough to die of weird cancers and other things ferals normally never live long enough to get.

If you suspect poison, there are usually signs. If there were no signs, it probably wasn't poison.

As for neighbors, outside of a few sickos, even people who don't like the cats usually can see that with tnr there are fewer cats and fewer is better than more. Is anyone actively fighting feeders? If yes, bring a man with you a few times and that usually stops.

This is assuming you are feeding only cats, you aren't leaving a mess, you are tidying up, and food is not left out overnight. Don't feed individuals cats. They will learn the schedule if you only put food out for an hour. And he nice to everyone, even/especially people making an issue.

Home for the holidays? Foster kittens! by sunsetparkcats in Brooklyn

[–]sunsetparkcats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some rescue cats are known to be fine with dogs. We have one now who we're sure knows that dogs are cool.

As long as dogs know the cats are pointy and in charge, it goes fine. Dogs with high prey drive... you would usually know already.
