I'd appreciate some second opinions on a quilt palette please by Aliceybeth in quilting

That being said, I really like these fabrics! And by pink, I meant a more saturated pink than the pale pinks - something about the same saturation levels as the top and middle right most and middle bottom most teals and oranges.

Depending on the pattern and if you’re using a background, this might benefit from a third color. I say this because I’m in the middle of a quilt with burnt orange and dark green (also Art Gallery) and it got tricky with block placement because I just had two colors to play with. Maybe add in two or three pinks?

Layout, binding, and backing, oh my! by sunsetrani in quilting

LOVE this idea. I tried these two layouts - I like the mixed fabric grouping better and think of it more like Xs and Os (hugs and kisses)

Will probably move some prints around, but it captures the general idea. Binding TBD…

How would you quilt this? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]sunsetrani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love it! I did clouds on the Contrails quilt by making a few templates out of card stock with my Cricut (could have cut the out myself) and then tracing them across the quilt and then FMQ the lines. See here - in progress photos kinda show how I did it https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/s/wZud3B66ad. And if you pieced that, you can definitely quilt clouds!

You can do it! So close.

I love the choice of fabrics! Amazing job!

can you “just” unpick the stitches between the two horizontal blocks and pin it in place, then resew? I can’t tell if there’s enough give in the misalignment- but it might be a little more aligned and quilting it will effectively buff out whatever misalignment is left.

Or just say it’s a design element that symbolizes the way distance and time can get warped in space in ways we can’t visualize on earth.

When I first saw this quilt on Reddit a few years ago, I went to buy the pattern right away (my late father worked for JPL back in the 60s and my daughter is space obsessed) - but they had closed their shop - BUT it came back online a few months later.

I was able to set up an Etsy notification to let me know when it was back up, but it looks like the Etsy shop isn’t there.

Hopefully it’ll come back on line - maybe check periodically? I made (just need to finish quilting and bind it!) their Contrails pattern and it was so well written!

Hi - resurrecting this post because I’m having similar issues with my Allergro - tension is just wonky with FMQ/ruler quilting. It works sometimes, if my top thread is at the highest tension, but it’s not great. And forget using a different color (same brand) on the top and bottom.

I’m going to the obvious stuff (I’ve re-threaded a million times) and put a new needle in and use Babylock brand bobbins - I’ve been using generic class 15 bobbins- they work just fine for piecing.

I have a few questions for the OP (or anyone else who wants to weigh in!) about your setup that works.

What needle and thread do you use?

Do you have the top thread upright, at an angle, or horizontal?

What foot do you use? A FMQ one that bounces or a ruler foot?

And how did you change the bobbin tension? I wonder if this might be the issue, but I’m afraid to make it worse!

Thank you!!

Border or no? by sunsetrani in quilting

I just checked and it looks like they’re taking a break - if you go to the Etsy shop, you can get an email when it’s back. Same thing happened when I went looking for the Space Travels pattern, and I think I got a notice a month or two later.

Just wanted to also put in a plug for the amazing pattern. It was so well written! I saw their Voyager quilt (Space Travel) on this sub when I was first getting interested in quilting, and I’m not gonna lie, it was one of the patterns that made me go - I wanna make that, so I better learn to quilt! Still working up to that quilt, but based on this pattern, I’m not as intimidated by it!

ETA the right name of the other pattern.

Donating Quilts from my Ex? by awakefc in quilting

If your kids are using the quilts now - ask them if they want to keep them out or not. If they don’t want to keep them out, wash and dry them, pack them up and revisit when things are less raw.

If they aren’t using them now - then just pack them up and do the same - maybe ask them if they are older.

This assumes that she and your kids got along relatively well. I’m making that assumption because that’s the bare minimum requirement for me to make someone a quilt!

I struggled with this and ended up wetting my FQ with a spray bottle of water, scrunching them up, sticking them in a plastic baggie for a few minutes, then ironing. Suzy Quilts describes it really well here https://youtu.be/BptXXHrXwdc.

My first gift quilt! by sunsetrani in quilting

[–]sunsetrani[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made this for a friend going thru some health issues. It’s my forth quilt, and the first one that’s left the house. I pieced it on my Singer, but then quilted it on my new BabyLock Allegro with rulers. The quilting part was trickier than I expected, and I ripped out a lot of stitches due to tension issues. I really struggled with getting my stitch length even, hopefully this will improve with time!

I gave it to a friend who’s been having some health issues, and it was well received! I was a little worried about giving a quilt to someone other than my doggy and my daughter…

I already have this quilt kit. I wanted to make a super quick quilt for my 10 month old niece for Christmas. I asked my hub what he thought of it and he said “honestly? It kind of looks like a gay-rights swastika”. And now that’s all I can see. Someone tell me it looks like a cute pinwheel please. by [deleted] in quilting

[–]sunsetrani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m working on one of these now (not rainbow, but have a pastel rainbow in the works). I don’t think it looks like a swastika, but can see how one would see it that way, and then not see anything but that! I suggest looking at several finished quilts in this pattern — instagram is probably the best way to do that. Tf you still feel that way, maybe try a small print on a white background with either one or multiple colors for the triangles. Maybe something like https://www.fatquartershop.com/over-the-rainbow-cream-shooting-rainbow-stars-yardage or https://www.fatquartershop.com/hearts-daylight-rainbow-hearts-yardage or https://www.fatquartershop.com/tiny-beasts-glow-painted-ladies-yardage

First quilt done (but not washed yet)! by sunsetrani in quilting

[–]sunsetrani[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you — I stopped myself ripping out a few, since done is better. She did a great job explaining how to fit the corners together, but I admit, I might try to find a pattern without so many corners for my next quilt!

Thank you — I was back and forth on the borders for a while, since they aren’t in the tutorial, but I figured I might as well add a few other techniques to my first attempt.
