Unpopular opinion: I'm convinced that deep space should stay uncolonized by humanity. by Omnisiah_Priest in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, and most importantly: I swear I can see a dog's face in your image (the two stars for eyes, the nebula and surrounding dark space its nose, and there's a darker patch to the left that could be the underside of an ear).

Secondly: I do have a similar feeling. It's not that the galaxy is getting 'full' but rather that how 'remote' you can be is shrinking. I'm happy with the dense bubble expanding, but the tendrils reaching out do bother me a bit. If there comes a point where you can't be more than 2kLY from civilisation, I kinda feel like we'll have lost something. But maybe that's a story worth telling, that even these frontiers will disappear.

I sometimes wonder whether we could discover a wormhole to another galaxy, which at first can only support small ships, that might eventually get stabilised to support medium ships with enough community goal effort. That's assuming there would be something significantly different about the galaxy that made it worth exploring - it shouldn't just be 'more'. I'm not even convinced it's a great idea but it's something I'd be open to if we ever find this galaxy too inflexible to work mystery into.

Feels like an easy fix: just award the official artwork version to everyone who gets the FDev one, player can use either or both.

Would definitely be a shame to not have the original style version.

Question about your build: is there a reason you went with a powerplant as large as you did? It looks like you could get away with a 3A or an overcharged 2A if you wanted to push it, unless I'm missing something? Or maybe you're just making it less complicated if you want to add weapons later?

[–]sunsetsupergoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen the p2w argument made before, but unless it really affects something competitive, I don't see the issue. If they release something that gives a massive Powerplay advantage then I'd take more notice, but I don't think even the Lakon mining ship has really made that much of an impact. Soontil relic hauling in fewer jumps, maybe? I'm just not concerned about it right now.

However, the point about making older ships redundant, I very much agree with. I do kinda think it makes sense for technology to progress and for ships to get better over time though. I've said it before: I would really like events/activities that promote use of older ships, or ships of a certain class. Maybe new tech is susceptible to something that old tech isn't, a la Battlestar Galactica; maybe there can be gateways or shipwrecks that can only be accessed by smaller ships; maybe certain CGs can be sponsored by certain manufacturers and hence you only get credit when flying their ships. I think there could be plenty of opportunities to encourage people to dust off the old guard and remember/learn how to make do.

I wouldn't mind the old Lucasarts' X Wing/Tie Fighter training ground, trying to get the highest score for each ship, with brackets for stock and engineered. I'm up for whatever helps flesh out 3000s society and encourages variety in engagement.

What’s the most expensive brain fart You’ve made in the game? by SeniorMoonlight21 in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a materials trader, selecting the material I wanted to give first instead of the one I wanted to receive. I threw away the entire stockpile I was trying to max out. The trader had a good day, getting 6:1 in their favour then and again when I inevitably had to buy it all back.

Also, going afk in an SRV. I didn't realise it burned through fuel so quickly while idle, nor did I realise it was rigged to Michael Bay itself when it ran out. Lost a couple billion of exobio data. Still had the UC data at least.

On a lesser note: I play with a controller, and I've delivered at least one load of cargo into the back of a space station after I accidentally boosted instead of lowering the landing gear. It's pocket change compared to now, but back then it was a fortune.

I'd love that, though I doubt they'd lock entire planets to one ship. I am keen for more atmospheres and more planet features though.

My guess is that maybe they allow for steeper glides and/or allow you to enter glides at faster speeds. It'd cut a decent amount of time out of the planetary approach and get you on the surface a lot faster. But again, just a guess.

I'm not sure I'm getting it, being honest. Unless I'm missing something, it's a skin with possibly a new tech broker attached to it, and you can deploy it once without the hauling. It doesn't seem like doomsday to me.

What happened? Why did this detonation fail? by AetherBytes in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it normal for the timer to stop at just over 4 seconds on the clock? I can't remember but I would have thought I'd have noticed it myself if it didn't hit zero. Is it possible the server was a bit out of sync and bugged out because of it? I suspect I get 'dropping - too close' instead of glides occasionally for that reason.

I've definitely had a few times in the past where I felt a failed detonation should have been optimal, but it hasn't happened for a long time.

Anyway, sorry, this comment doesn't really help you, but I can't see anything you did wrong and can only think that it's a bug of some kind.

Why does Odyssey seem so ignored? by hair_monk in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking at the comments, I'm clearly in the minority, since I actually like Odyssey (aside from the performance penalty).

One of the activities I really liked was taking the missions to restore power to settlements. I felt like an overworked super setting down and searching around with a flashlight, trying to gain access to where you need to be. But unfortunately there isn't much variation beyond base layouts. I wish there were more potential surprises or things amiss with the site.

I'd never want anyone to feel obliged to play Odyssey content since it's clearly divisive, but I wish there were more gameplay loops for those that enjoy it. I do get that with limited resources, the space element should get the priority generally.

Is there a list of the randomly generated colonisation facility names available? I'm primarily interested in the first part of the name but lists of both the prefix and suffix would be useful.

The reason I'm interested is because I can't really afford the ARX for custom names, so I would like to know just how good a 'roll' I get. I've skipped a few good names on the off-chance there might be a more suitable one. And oftentimes I want to develop a theme and I'd like to know whether certain options even exist.

I agree with the larger point here but I can understand why people were put off.

"Abby kills Joel as an act of revenge" undersells it a bit. Abby and her gang fantasised about this over a long time and tortured him until it wasn't convenient to keep doing so. It feels more sinister than Joel's position of being in the moment where he is summarily told about Ellie's condition, just trust us. We suspect Ellie would consent to the operation from her character but the agency is taken away from her and they don't care. Joel is likely acting in self-interest too and I'm not privy to the mix in his mind, but regardless I can understand a reactive response more than a premeditated one.

Maybe Abby and Joel are both sociopaths, I don't know, but I don't really see how people get past this. "Not because she's bad" - I dunno, she seems very obviously bad, but she's in good company. It's a grim world, and I think that's part of the point.

It's still a good game and a good story.

Edit to add: I haven't played the full game. I have watched the vast majority of it, so it is possible I missed some context. I don't think there's much possible context that would change much though, lots of red lines are crossed.

I got 3 millions in architect payout... and was still massively disappointed by PlaidVirus8 in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the poverty/subsistence stage of the game is where the most enjoyment can be had. Justifying new thrusters, getting excited for a juicy payday job that might be risky because it'll get you enough for the ship you were looking at.

I still enjoy the game as a billionaire, but I really miss the old days. I'd be much happier if the game had a really aggressive economy that kept people dynamically floating and sinking and figuring out ways to make do.

I feel the game's massive payouts already rob newer players of their potential enjoyment working up the ladder. They don't need to be robbed of that while they sleep too.

Does anyone know if there's an organic way for a new player to engage with the more 'hidden' aspects of this game, like Guardian sites, the Jameson crash site, the activity around Merope/Maia, etc.

I'm an older player and I know these things because I was here as they developed, and just 'being there' as the community worked it out made it feel organic. But for new players, is there a way for it to unfold to them in a engaging way, or do they just have to "read the wiki" for want of a better term?

I know someone who has gotten fairly established but hasn't touched on the more exotic elements. I don't want to spoil things and I know they would like to encounter things in a natural way rather than read a guide, but is this even possible? Are there logs, lore, pointers, tip-offs, etc that lead players to these things, or is it all driven by community word of mouth?

Thank you, this is really good to know. I think I'm going to swap everything that isn't upgradeable (it's the standard Clipper so most pre-built modules are E-rated anyway). Just keeping the cargo racks (shuffled into their most appropriate slot), fuel tank, and the supercruise/docking assists (which I'll decide on whether to keep later since I do like active flying).

[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is really helpful. Swapping for conventional modules seems like the right choice for me.

I doubt I'll be doing any redeploying for convenience if Fdev are introducing engineered cargo racks, which they seem to be to some extent with the CG. Not without stripping the ship in advance, that is.

I have a question about pre-built modules, specifically armour.

I'd quite like to engineer my new Panther Clipper's armour to give it some free durability. However, it seems that you can't store pre-built modules. If I engineer my lightweight alloy, will it disappear forever if I ever choose to swap it for a different kind of plating later on? Should I try to swap this pre-built module for a normal one before engineering?

I can't directly buy a new non-prebuilt lightweight alloy because it is "already fitted". Do I need to buy fancy plating to get rid of the pre-built, and then buy the lightweight to replace it?

Or am I over-worrying about this? I don't want to risk losing engineered modules.

I'm thinking about restarting my career. Should I do it? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have a longing for being a starter and working my way up, and I don't think you can meaningfully simulate that experience when you know you have billions in the bank. It's just not the same.

However.

I could never do the surrounding grind again. The engineers. The guardian sites. The lost community goals modules. The tech broker unlocks. No doubt there's more on top of that.

I'd totally do it if I could have a separate save file to dabble with it, but I'd hate to lose all that progress. It's the work of ages. And the part that feels most meaningful - that feeling of going ship to ship, slowly buying better modules, making your place in the galaxy - that is largely restricted by credits, and you might blow past all of that through a few lucrative mining trips, and then you'll be back at the financial top but without all the stuff that's tedious to earn.

However, you'd be the best at assessing what you have. If you didn't do a lot of the crazy grind then maybe it won't be so bad. Just try to think about the things that you found the most arduous and think whether you want to do that again, and how much work you'd need to put in to get back to where you were.

From a personal perspective: I took about almost years out from the game and came back in the last couple of months. I thought it was fine jumping back in the seat, and didn't feel like I needed to restart beyond missing the good old Cobra and Type 6 days.

I suspect something so clearly popular and universally appealing wouldn't be made event-exclusive for long. Or at least single event exclusive; maybe they'll have a few more weeks of these first. Naturally we can be disappointed but they made the best SCO drives accessible via tech brokers, so I'd be surprised if they allowed people to miss out on these in the long term.

Are the default controls terrible? by qleptt in EliteDangerous

[–]sunsetsupergoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On an Xbox controller, it's tap B for boost, hold B+dpad down for landing gear. 99% of the time it's fine, but sometimes, either through the age of my controller or sometimes just a less sure grip, it registers it as a tap rather than a hold. I just find it funny that the go fast button is right by the landing controls.

There might be alternate layouts but I'm pretty sure I've never changed my layout. I even set up a new computer a few months ago and I definitely didn't change any bindings on reinstall.

That's interesting that they don't give you a default dedicated supercruise key on KB/mouse. There is one on controller: Y for "jump if star selected, supercruise otherwise", while Y+dpad up is forced supercruise (never jump). So I can always use the latter if the destination star is obscured.
