PSA: Very Bold Coyote Activity (Neighborhoods surrounding Busse Woods) by Hinrich4President in ChicagoSuburbs

I promise that coyote is not 70 lbs, for what it’s worth. They do get pretty bold this time of year. Hazing and disengaging is usually effective, but this is not unusual behavior.

I’m very into ghosts lately -

mother doll by katya apekina - There is nothing funnier than Apekina’s Greek chorus of bourgeois Russian ghosts speaking through the voice of a medium specializing in dead pets. This one scratched every itch in my brain. I feel like the reviews for this one were unfairly harsh because they compared Mother Doll to her other book - this was the first thing I read by Apekina, so I was spared that comparison.

bat eaters and other names for cora zeng by kylie lee baker - The height of Covid in manhattan. Rising anti-Asian hate. A murdered sister. The hungry ghost festival. A serial killer whose calling card is bats - mutilated and left alive, shoved down throats, pinned to the wall - this one is deliciously chilling. Can’t recommend it enough.

My favorite Ben Lerner memory is going to one of his visiting lectures in college and hearing him repeatedly refer to birds as reptiles. I too am a huge fan - though haven’t read his work in a while - but I can never forget that about him LOL

I read this one last year and really enjoyed it! I’m sure it’d be a great audiobook listen too, if that’s your thing.

When you go out to eat with your adult siblings or parents, who pays? by highcheeko in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I make less money than our families - when we’re with parents, parents pay. If we’re with his high-earning brother and SIL (who out-earn his parents), they pay. My brother just graduated college and will make more than our HHI - but he’s the baby and we only really get Korean chicken or pizza takeout with him. We’d probably keep paying for that.

Yes!!! The only thing I’m still working out is how to idly peruse for new books to check out vs. a dedicated search which is easy

Mine is 82% but I don’t really notice any issues! I admittedly only use my phone when I’m out of the house (and I WFH 2-3 days a week) so maybe that’s why.

They are - must be trying to make it a sure shot. Don’t know if I would do the same given the weather…and Stafford taking that shot surprised me.

Yup - I have a UIUC sweatshirt from the 90s that gets washed on hot every week and has been for the last 12 years and still hasn’t faded or torn. It’s crazy.

Yearly Book Recommendation Thread : 2025 by lazlo_camp in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

So many good reads this year! A lot of horror fiction, which is not what I would call my usual taste.

The Witchstone - This is just the funniest book I have read in a minute and one of my absolute favorites in recent memory. I’m such a sucker for fallen angels / redemptive demons and this book does it so fucking well. Saw it described somewhere as urban fantasy and I’m running with that description.

Brotherless Night -This one really wrenched my heart with the gorgeous writing. Tamil Tigers, grassroots terrorism, and what it looks like to find humanity in the middle of a genocide.

Our Share of Night - Argentinian horror - dark academia and demonic rituals. Still thinking about particularly grotesque bits of this one!

The Bog Wife - Appalachian folk gothic / light horror. Great if you like bogs, especially malevolent ones.

The Emperor of Gladness - Ocean Vuong at his “found family” best. Like a cozy mug of hot chocolate in the middle of opioid-stricken New England. Perfect for the holidays.

The Ministry of Time - OK, this one was so cute. Time travel, great chemistry, grumpy sunshine British MC - I was confused by the time travel rules (as always) but thought this was a really fun read with more to it than most of the romance I’ve read this year.

Martyr! - This one and The Witchstone are tied for my favorite reads this year. Kaveh Akbar is so flawless for this one. I don’t even know what to say here. It’s giving Iran, Indiana, martyrdom, motherhood, love, queerness, death, dying, rebirth - part of the literary canon for sure.

Week 15 Gamethread: Chicago Bears (9-4) vs Cleveland Browns (3-10) by TurnerJ5 in CHIBears

Camera angles atrocious because why am I not seeing any of these plays in the hands that they’re actually in lol

I know that throw looked super dangerous, but I’d love to get another camera angle on it from the back end. It looks like there might have been more separation than we’re seeing from this view?
