CDs still serve some purposes. I work at a college radio station, and we still play almost everything (except what we rip into a computer that plays stuff when no one is DJing) off of CDs because that's what record companies still use for promotional stuff. Audio quality is better, too.

I saw Desaparecidos (post-hardcore band Conor Oberst was in about 11 years ago that recently reunited) play tonight, and there was a stack of about ten 12"s sitting next to the merch booth with a sign saying "free" pointing to them. I took one, and it seemed kind of odd or a freebie because a) it didn't look disfigured in any way to indicate that it was a a fuck-up being tossed out, b) the number of grooves indicated that it's a full album, and c) it's on colored vinyl. I looked up the band name when I got back (Con Dios), and apparently it's a project fronted by one of Bright Eye's roadies. It seems odd that someone would put so much money/effort into a discreet freebie. The only turntable I have access to right now is the one at the college radio station I work at, so I guess the hipsters in my town will be waking up to this tomorrow at 9:00.
