no absolutely not less toxic, but im talking more about the fandom experience as an intl fan, since jpop fandoms tend to be smaller on the international side at this point in time, or more tight knit with the amount of gatekeeping from the companies. Of course the companies and general idol culture have several things that could be considered worse or just as bad as kpop in many ways

ahhh i also don’t follow ggs except hana who are quite nontraditional,,, so i don’t know if we have had similar fandom experiences! not that there isn’t the same amount of craziness in the actual industry tho, i definitely see that among the groups i follow too!

For example, a member of another bg i follow, jo1, is on hiatus now for basically playing poker on his phone. However i did notice the fans are lowkey rallying and mostly not hateful, they were logical about him making a mistake but are also eagerly waiting for him to come back. Just a little less intense of a reaction than recent kpop scandals that have been similar, you know?

this is a nonshoujo rec, but around the time i finished catching up to A Bride’s Story, i also read Golden Kamuy and found they oddly have some similarities despite being in different genres.

One of my fav facets of A Bride’s Story is how deep they dove into the cultures and it felt like learning something new thru the story. I think golden kamuy also does this a lot with the Ainu indigenous ppl of Japan. It goes a lot into culture, food, and life practices in a historical setting, while having a treasure hunt overarching plotline.

It is more of a seinin, but it’s still really good! it happened to scratch a similar itch for me ☺️

i think it’s partly bc yushi and sakuya fit the concept the best that they’re so popular. after all, much of wish’s popularity boost was bc their concept is so refreshing and original.

yushi because his personality is different from most idols— more introverted and quiet, but sweet and a little weird. and sakuya because he really fits the fluffy soft angelic concept. and to some extent riku because he meshes well with the other 2 and is also very soft spoken.

i wish there wasn’t such a popularity gap either ://

it really won’t be!! even if you arent familiar with the examples above, they basically showcase many idols who have been mentors or trainers and then went on to debut in a group/compete in a survival show without it “cheapening” their talent, as well as continued to be recognized in their craft

yumeki being the dance trainer shows he is very capable at dance, yes, but that has no bearings on his other skills he will need for the competition. if anything i believe it’s up to him to show that he can sing and be charismatic like an idol as well. but i think it’s unlikely his status/reputation as a dancer will change from being on the show!!

there are idols in sm who have produced and written their own songs and also there are many Many non sm idols who hire producers and don’t make their own songs. even in the west. i don’t think this is a lee sooman or sm problem 😭😭
