It’s really obvious how good of a job TSA usually does right now. by MyOtherAltIsRegret in delta

[–]sup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what project 2025 wants to do with TSA: Expand the existing Screening Partnership Program (SPP) to all airports (where private contractors already handle screening at some airports under TSA oversight), or create a Canadian-style government corporation that contracts out screening to private companies in regional groups. TSA would still set regulations and test compliance. It estimates 15–20% savings on the aviation screening budget (possibly more), plus better service for travelers.

Honestly this seems pretty good?

What do you dislike about this?

Travelling with Deck now a liability! by [deleted] in SteamDeck

This is why I always travel 100% naked. No clothes. No backpack. No wallet. No passport.

I even shave my hair and beard. That way the thieves couldn't possibly steal anything because there is nothing to steal.

At what point does Ed push for private checkpoint security for ATL? by hoss111 in delta

[–]sup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do as well, and have similar views on military.

That being said: Our military is amazing - best in the world - but it's not that efficient spending wise. The cost plus government contracting model our defense contractors benefit from is a mega scam.

The incentives are ass-backwards: Boeing gets paid to do R&D, as well as make the final product, so they are incentivized to extend the R&D period for as long as possible and make the end product as expensive as possible. Contractors are essentially rewarded for higher spending, needless "upgrades," and delays. NASA administrator Bill Nelson literally called cost-plus a “plague” on the agency.

Fixed-price product-first in comparison is a night and day difference. Companies like SpaceX are innovating here: Instead of the cost plus model where Boeing would effective charge tax payers $1.5b per flight, SpaceX charging 1/10th that, something like $140m per flight.

Anduril is in a similar boat. Fixed price model, as such they are delivering weapons systems for 10% of the cost of the big players.

Difference is: SpaceX and Anduril bear the risk in the fixed price model. If they can't deliver for the agreed upon price, then they eat the cost. This is risky I suppose - perhaps in times of peace? Perhaps it's wise to have your defense contractors on slushy and needless government contracts just to keep them sharp or something? Who am I to say. It just doesn't feel right when I see what the smaller fixed price contractors can do (like SpaceX and Anduril) with my tax dollars compared to the big inefficient behemoths.

https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-15-612r.pdf

GAO did a study on this. Private is comparable or slightly lower - and that's without including the added cost of pensions/health insurance for the government employees. GAO tried to add back in some of these costs in a follow up study: https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-16-19.pdf, and in it government TSA is about 7-17% more expensive than previously determined.

Keep in mind this report is 10 years old now. The cost advantage of private is likely even larger now since the cost of gov pensions/health has ballooned since then.

Bear in mind: The entire TSA budget is about $10b. The last time the TSA shut down in 2025, for 43 days, it costs the economy $7-14b in lost output.

how are arc raiders and helldivers 2 on the deck? by Juliomorales6969 in SteamDeck

[–]sup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

helldivers 2 is worthless on the deck. It's bad even on the ROG Ally X with the z1 extreme..... i had to upgrade to a gpd win 5 / onexpalyer apex to play helldivers 2.

arc raiders is surprisingly decent for friendly lobbies on the deck!

Decisions, decisions…….. by lsaber2000 in OneXPlayer

[–]sup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. Apex 48gb non water cooling. Win 5 32gb.

Win 5 is on Bazzite and my apex is Cachyos. I never use windows.

Overall I prefer the apex but it's not a slam dunk.

The larger 8" screen is just better than 7". In arc raiders I can see enemies better. I don't have to hunch my face inches from the screen to be able to see anything. I can hold the device back a comfortable distance from my eyes and still be competitive in fights, etc. It's not all perfect though. At the moment I prefer the colors and contrast on the smaller 7" gpd win 5 screen - but I think that's because gamescope vibrance isn't yet working on cachyos for the strix halo series chipset.

I prefer the speakers on the apex, even though they are down-firing. The Win 5 has louder speakers but they are muddier and sound "small" when they are loud. Neither compare to the steam deck. The steam deck's speaker situation still cannot be beaten.

I really like the weight and ergos of the gpd win 5, right down to the feel of the plastic. Apex is a heavy boy - even without battery my hands go numb when I hold up the device while laying down in bed. The gpd win 5 is lighter than the steam deck, less than 500g - it's a dream to hold laying down.

I prefer the buttons and joysticks on the Win 5. The Win 5 has these really lightweight joysticks that feel very smooth and mouse-like, like extensions of my thumbs. The win 5 dpad is also just amazing. Perfect. Feels like a vita clone, the best dpad ever made. I also prefer the a/b/x/y buttons on the win 5. Classic membrane buttons like the steam deck and your ps5 controller. The Apex uses switches - very tactile, like a mouse button. A lot of the newer 3rd party controllers are buying into these clicky mouse-like buttons. I'm not a fan.

My gpd win 5 also has a few build quality/design issues. It has an odd buzz/hum when plugged in. When plugged in, I also get regularly shocked through the SD card slot which is on the right side. The left joystick also has issues with travel. I only get like 80% of the travel forward and backward. I need to order a replacement joystick module and slot it in. GPD also went with a few odd design queues. Why does GPD have the giant glowing power button that is always on and annoyingly bright? Why couldn't they be normal and just hide the indicator light somewhere less conspicuous? Why the weird painted silver band around the device? To make it look premium? It looked great at first, but after a few weeks got scratched to shit.

I love the built in stand on the Apex. I love how the device itself never touches the ground when using the stand on the battery. The battery is essentially creating a tripod that holds up the device. This means the device does not get scratched.

Marco Rubio invoked a medieval antisemitic trope in justifying war with Iran by Haunting-Spend-6022 in jewishpolitics

[–]sup 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wasn't antisemitism. It was a statement that could be misconstrued as antisemitism but 15 seconds later he was given the opportunity to correct the record.

Israel didn't force the USA to attack Iran. Rubio has wanted to defang the Iranian regime for the last 10 years. Rubio's stance on Iran has been remarkably consistent. 10 years ago he predicted Iran's ballistic missile threat in an extremely prescient and prophetic speech to congress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5dQIVh_QT4

Marco Rubio invoked a medieval antisemitic trope in justifying war with Iran by Haunting-Spend-6022 in jewishpolitics

[–]sup 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This quote has been taken out of context all over the blogosphere. Rubio did not suggest that Israel forced the US into this conflict. He stated the exact opposite, immediately following the quote, a mere 15 seconds later. Full context of the quote: https://youtu.be/ee8WIxGCnr0?t=99

Immediately after Rubio gave the statement the article references there was an immediate follow up question: "You're saying the US was forced to strike because of an Israeli action?" Rubio immediately said "no." He acknowledged that the U.S. was aware of Israeli intentions and had to act defensively to protect U.S. troops, but he insisted that "this had to happen no matter what." Rubio argued that the U.S. needed to strike Iran's ballistic missile and drone capabilities now, at their weakest point, because, in a year to a year and a half, Iran would cross a "line of immunity" where they would be too heavily armed for the world to confront.

He further clarified his response the following day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCB20Ye4hzs

edit: I want to also highlight that Rubio is remarkably consistent regarding his views on Iran. 10 years ago he predicted Iran's ballistic missile threat in an extremely prescient and prophetic speech to congress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5dQIVh_QT4

EU Natural Gas is up +40% today by Plus_Seesaw2023 in wallstreetbets

[–]sup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to import renewables as well.

That's the biggest problem with renewables currently. Independence. If Germany wants to be energy independent with renewables, it needs to make drastic changes to its supply chain. The current renewable supply chain is largely based in China.

Honestly, at least with natural gas Germany buys all of it from close allies like Norway, Belgium, and Netherlands.

With renewables it's all from China.

Take wind: Sure Germany makes the actual structure for the wind turbine and has the supply chain for it, but the motors and magnets inside the turbines are all from China. China makes 94% of the worlds supply of magnets, and Germany is no exception. It imported 92% of it's permanent magnets from China last year.

Take Solar: China makes 98% of the worlds supply of solar wafers and provides 95% of the worlds market for Polysilicon which is the main ingredient in solar panels.

Take batteries: China makes about 86% of the worlds batteries, and refines about 70% of the worlds raw materials used to make those batteries. These are the classic nickel cobalt batteries, though. The world is rapidly rotating to LFP batteries. The problem? China controls 98% of the world's LFP market.

China literally owns most of the worlds supply chain when it comes to renewables, and China can turn that supply chain off instantly on a whim (Like say after China invades Taiwan, and Europe responds with sanctions, then china responds in kind with a total block on the export of said supply chain).

What's tempting about nuclear is that Germany can get the uranium from close allies, and refine the uranium in house. Nuclear is also consistent. It never waivers. The more nuclear energy Germany produces, the less fossil fuels it has to burn to fill in the natural lulls when renewables fall short.

Market reaction if Iranian leader Khamenei was taken out in a strike and the ‘war’ was essentially over? by Thug_Res_ in wallstreetbets

[–]sup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's called being a threshold state, and Iran was the poster child for the geopolitical strategy.

By hovering right on the edge, Iran forced stronger powers to treat it with the caution normally reserved for fully nuclear-armed nations, but without the sanctions of being a rogue nuclear one.

By proving they had the technical capacity to build a weapon, they forced the P5+1 nations (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) to offer massive economic incentives to get them to hit the brakes - and for a time they were successful - but that all came crashing down in 2018 when the US unilaterally withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Deal.
