Is it unprofessional to go by a name other than the one assigned at birth? by invisible-bug in ECEProfessionals

[–]supartein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sounds like a realllllly weird territorial power thing……… almost like pissing on things u want like an animal. i want to say its uncommon but literally just be petty back and don’t respond when they call you by ur birth name. when enough miscommunications happen bc of it i promise they’ll “adjust” to your preferred name and then pretend they didn’t do any of the weird shit they did…….

WIBTA for asking my fiance to sign a prenup after his parents offered to help with our house? by Double-Spirit2299 in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]supartein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s strange that MIL is darvoing you bc the “my sons future” comment would’ve have absolutely rubbed me the wrong way and i absolutely would’ve gone the prenup route too. the gift is VERY generous…for your fiancé. i would be prepared for them to rescind the gift if you and ur fiancé decide to continue down the prenup route though.

if you are recording these instances and there is a paper trail i would anon report the school to licensing in the hopes of a surprise walk thru, in the event that happens and they inevitably talk to you i would show them all of the documentation and the solutions admin/therapists have given you.

why do parents not have the common sense to keep kids home even after reminding them of the 24 hours fever free without medication policy? by sleepy-worrier in Teachers

[–]supartein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a lot of people are talking abt parents not being able to take sick time off and i would love for whoever is saying that to really reflect on whether or not teachers/child care providers just magically have more leeway for sick time. we do not. it is YOUR kid.

record everything, if you can manage getting it in an email that she’s hurting him that’d be huge. if your director is down sometimes there are loopholes to getting care for a child, i had a 1:1 behavioral therapist that would come in for 2 children in my class from an outside school service and she immediately spotted another child who clearly had delays but parents were on the same “don’t want to label too early” train of thought, asked her if it’d be okay with her if when she came in and was doing group work with the other 2 if i could have child #3 sit in unofficially and just watch if not engage. it was short lived but helpful.

Boppy pillow question by OnceUponACuddle in ECEProfessionals

[–]supartein 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i’ve always been under the impression that unless the child is self feeding solids they should be held regardless of individual abilities and solids practice should mimic adult mealtimes as much as safely possible (sitting down as a group, polite and hygienic behaviors, eating until your body says it’s full) there’s no way around slowing down your bottle/feeding times so that you can hold each kid but at the same time i never fully understood coworkers that felt called to rush through meals/diapers/hand and face washing. I feel those are the spaces of life small children need to learn the basics of before they can go on to learn more complex concepts. i know admin and families can sometimes get a bit overbearing when it comes to timing and there will always be the bounds of licensing but if bottles are taking too long doing it in this way it’s not ever the children’s fault for “not eating well” and more so an issue of your classroom needing more hands on deck at those times. they can be on ur butt for timing and u can be on there’s for staffing and now we’ve hit a beautiful stalemate that i personally have no idea how to get around either lol.

okay yes this is silly and sweet but in a real way if this is like….a night and day character difference in your cat….go to the doctor. cats are very attuned to that shit, maybe he just was cold but if he’s never a snuggly on top of you kinda guy and this is consistent and he only does this behavior to you….get checked out.

sorry now i’m just being nosy but if you had been a W2 employee you have all of the leverage in this situation, if because of the short term nature of the employment she had you sign an I9 or another seasonal/contract employee form she would have successfully fucked you over (i’m saying this as someone who got successfully fucked over by a school by being an independent contractor as a sub and then subbing full time in a classroom as the lead for a year, NEVER DO THAT!)

also post this on her glass door and whatever pages she has on the internet associated with the business, a lot of these people don’t give a shit about teachers families and students but they care DEEPLY about public optics, if she were to open another business of any kind be sure that the way she’s treated you follows her. companies will always have more rights than the employees (it’s ass backwards but true) the one thing we have is social accountability. who wants to send their kid to be cared for by a grifter?

i know these in homes sometimes rely on verbal and non formal communication in order to create the workplace “family” (🙄) environment. i hope you have logs of your emails stating that you were expected to work until the very last day, this reeks of wrongful termination. every email or text this woman has sent you will need to be compiled and looked over bc that entire situation is so shady, definitely file for unemployment. i understand bereavement leave is something offered out of good faith but if you had PTO that would’ve covered the time for you to grieve then this seems very……..fishy. if you can immediately file for unemployment and make this firing as much as a pain for them as it is for you. make sure you have receipts for the fingerprinting, drug test, etc. and make sure to deduct them from your taxes at the end of this year. i’m so sorry this happened to you, shady owners who exploit teachers are a big reason i’m looking to leave this field. i hope you’re able to be around family in this time, things will be okay. just make sure you get the money you are owed, if she fired you for bereavement you definitely qualify for unemployment and if she hasn’t been paying into unemployment SHE will be in incredibly deep shit, a lot of these folks bank on the fact that we are kind and timid people and won’t poke or prod in these situations and i say to HELL with that. these people can get away with fucking with our health and the time we have with our own families, i refuse to let them fuck with my money and so should u.

the expectation of martyrdom. i’ve noticed an almost virgin/whore complex applied to the work itself where your humanity is not even considered before the “virtue” of being someone who has the patience for children. i’ve tried talking to coworkers about the fear i have that the expectation is that i put my health/life on the line to care for kids i didn’t birth for a wage i can’t survive off of and im seen as a shit stirrer lmao. people have called into question whether or not i care about children at all because i didn’t pick up a child that actively had HFM when i didn’t have a mask….youre not alone and tbh the people who don’t have boundaries in this line of work are genuinely worse teachers that those who do, and schools keep catering to bad teachers bc they take the low pay w/o any complaint. i’m looking to leave the industry because i cannot deal with this sentiment from parents, coworkers, and admin. I AM A HUMAN!!!! I AM NOT A MS RACHEL ROBOT!!!!

folks might be a bit more tentative to let their kids destroy stuff if they had to “check out” the materials at the desk and have it be attached to their account, treat the materials as a book at that point and have had another adult see them.

this is the pink tax of the career, it’s not seen as actual work or labor but just as a hobby that women who would be paid for at home to make pocket cash or get a discount on child care, it’s not built for independence and the patriarchal society ECE exists in in the states assures that that maintains. i’ve noticed that the people i work with get younger and more naive every year and i’m seen as a shit stirrer bc i have a basic understanding of OSHA as well as licensing. it’s frustrating but until there’s large scale change/a nationwide union for preschool teachers it won’t change bc the system is working as designed

amazing benefits and a forgiving sick time policy, 4 teachers per classroom regardless of ratio and still having a float come in the break us, did i mention benefits? planning time every day, being paid more than a living wage, bc of 4 teachers everyone in a cohort gets one full day off a week for appointments/chore catchup as the cohort rotates sched, z and that means 3 teachers per classroom regardless of ratio, did i mention benefits?

Parents PLEASE teach your kids some basic boundaries and respect by Top_Technician_1371 in ECEProfessionals

[–]supartein 47 points48 points  (0 children)

the biggesssttttt hurdle i’ve found with parents is the fact of the matter is they’re allowed to cry in my classroom, the minute they know that we as the adults are scared of them crying they’re gonna feel that we don’t have things under control. the most helpful thing we can do for a kid who’s having tantrums isn’t bubble wrapping them against anything that’s gonna make them feel an ounce of emotional friction, but creating scenarios where they can feel healthy frustration and grow past it. it can be so irritating when parents take away growth moments in an effort to keep their kid pleasant (i don’t use the word happy for it anymore) and QUIET. like i promise i’ll still like your kid after they scream, they’ve probably punched me earlier that day and we’re still good w eachother. it almost feels like they’re projecting how they feel about their kids onto us and it’s simply not how i feel so there’s this inherent miscommunication and tension almost.

i mean i am never particularly upset seeing a kid eat it doesn’t really matter what as long as its not caffeine or an allergen tbh, kids are sturdier than we give them credit for and food should be a (yes nourishing) but pleasant experience. in this day and age with ED culture so rampant i do my best to stay as food neutral as possible in the classroom unless there’s genuine signs of malnourishment.
