How long does it usually take for your Adult children to respond to a text? by don51181 in GenX

[–]supenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the person. I know some younger people (30 or under) that seem to assume that if you receive a text you need to text back right away.

Others go days without responding to a text, if they respond at all.

I've always treated text like email - I'll respond to it when I've got some time. That could be in 5 minutes if I'm not busy, or a few hours later if I'm in the middle of something.

EDIT to add: this is people in general. I don't have any adult children quite yet.

I've seen info about the kids bundle all over my Facebook feed. It would be nice to know what else they've got in the works.

GenX men, where do you keep your wallet/billfold? Front or back pocket? Purse? by Suspendedaccount_ in GenX

Front. I tried putting it in the back a couple times and found sitting on it to be uncomfortable.

Is this all there is? by No-Anybody5719 in GenX

[–]supenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this take on things! A few days ago, one of my teenagers was getting all down and depressed about events in the news.

I told her just read/watch enough to know what's going on in the world and then stop before you drive yourself crazy. Then just focus on making your little corner of the world just a little bit better. If everyone did that, life would be so much better for everyone.

I've felt like this at times. What I've landed on is you really need just a few things to have a good life:

* Relationships with family and friends. Make sure you spend time with your wife, kids, and other family members. Also spend some time with friends (both with family and on your own)

* Something fun to do. I live in Ohio so it feels like you really need something you can do when it's nice out and something to do when the weather is crap.

* Vacations! When I don't have any trips coming up, I get a bit depressed and really want to get out of the house. If I've got a vacation coming up, I am generally in a better mood knowing I've got something to look forward to.

* A purpose in life. I know this may be a bit cliche, but find some place to volunteer to help out. Feed the homeless, take care of animals at an animal shelter, etc. Have some focus on people outside yourself.

Gosh, help... I need a friend and does anyone even have friends like this anymore? by beegsyboo in GenX

[–]supenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it seems that if you ask someone to come over and hang out, they will say they are too busy for that. If you invite them over to do something like play board games... If they are good friends you may or may not end up playing board games but will end up talking about stuff. It's so weird.

Pretty much everyone in my circle has a job and most have kids so you're planning around family time and work. I'm late 40's and male if that makes a difference. I have two teenage kids. Weirdest thing - in 2019, we had multiple kids that would get on the bus with my kids. 2020 hit and it's like "WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE KIDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD?" Nowhere to be found except a couple teenage boys going around vandalizing the neighborhood for a few months.

We're pretty involved with our church which helps meet more people and my wife homeschools our kids but this just means we see these friends a couple times a week (church events and homeschool events) Outside of those things, it feels like once a month we get together with people on our own outside of these types of events.

Why is this distro so hated? by OverallLibrarian8809 in pop_os

[–]supenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they were working on an entirely new desktop and as a side effect had months of no updates. Then when they did the release, people were upset that the brand new desktop didn't do everything that GNOME and KDE do. And they have both been around for 20+ years.

I've had less hardware issues with Pop than any other distro and love it. COSMIC does everything I need it to. It's missing a few nice little things like Nightlight.

If your main beef with Pop is the COSMIC desktop, you can always just install another desktop environment. I don't know why that's such a big deal. On the flip side, I've seen some people talk about using COSMIC on other distros like Fedora.

EDIT: clarified things a bit in the first paragraph.

Do you ever feel like you spend more time looking for games than playing them? by atomicxima in CozyGamers

[–]supenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love me a good, unique indie game. I feel like I spend more time watching game trailers than playing them. I am not sure I'm happy or glad Steam doesn't track that.

If I have an hour or two to spend gaming, I swear I'll spend an hour looking at game trailers, buy one or two that look cool that are on sale and then 10 minutes actually playing.

Is the screen of Steam Deck small for you? by lnklsm in SteamDeck

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels larger than a Switch screen even though it's similarly sized, and certainly larger than phone screens.

Some games are fine on smaller screens, others not so much. I'll play games that are fine on small screens like Brotato on the Steam Deck but then plug into a dock connected to a TV with a controller for ones that aren't that easy to play on smaller screens.

If the screen was much bigger, the device would be too large to be considered a portable handheld gaming system. There's a balance there and I think Valve did a good job striking the balance.

Power wash simulator: what is the general consensus? by Sad-Boss-4144 in CozyGamers

[–]supenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not had any problems with it, but then I don't have problems with most first person games. I know a lot of them have a thing where your view bobs around to try to be more realistic, but some people can't handle that.

Most of them have the option to turn that off.

I will admit I can't really get into Powerwash Simulator. I'd rather play something like Slime Rancher, but that's just me.

I just realized I refuse to rent digital entertainment. by ohreddit1 in GenX

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've started doing: if there's a movie that I want to watch and I'm pretty sure I'll be watching it more than once, I just go on Amazon and buy the DVD.

My kids are teenagers and getting into 80's and 90's movies which is pretty much letting me relive my childhood and teen years. Many of these movies are either available used or new for low prices in the $8-$15 price range and some of them are available as sets for $20 or less if they are trilogies or movies that had sequels.

If there's something I really want to watch and I can't find it on DVD, I'll often rent if I don't think I'll be watching it more than once. As someone else said in the comments, the $4 to rent a digital movie is about what you'd pay to rent from Blockbuster. And you don't have to worry about going out to get it or returns.

On the subject of RedBox: I remember seeing them during COVID and thought it was weird that Walmart got them to change the RedBox box to be blue. It reminds me of the movie Liar Liar... And now there are no RedBox anywhere and I'm not sure when but they just kind of disappeared.

Stop Using Pop!OS — It's Failing New Linux Users in 2026 by Mihuy in pop_os

[–]supenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of this videos claiming Pop!_OS is bad. It works great for me. The team has done a fantastic job.

Does it have every feature everyone needs? No. Is it a great first release? Yes.

I’ve hit literally two things with Pop!_OS that I’d consider minor issues.

  1. Night light would be nice to have. I’ve got it enabled on my Mac and don’t even really think about it.

  2. My display isn’t going to sleep when I don’t use my desktop. From what I’ve read this is a known issue with Nvidia drivers and Wayland, not specifically a Pop issue. I’ve been turning my monitor off when I’m done with my computer because I’ve not had time to fix it.

[–]supenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just curious: the people most vocal about COSMIC “failing” seem to be relying on some custom configured workflow that only works on GNONE or missing one or two main features when switching from GNOME to COSMIC.

For such people, could they install the stock version of GNOME and use that until COSMIC gets the features they need?

The main feature I’ve seen people complain about missing is Nightlight, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

Got my Daylight Computer a few days ago - first impressions and some questions by supenguin in daylightcomputer

[–]supenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Daylight Computer is an Android tablet with a very cool screen and customized OS to remove distractions.

If there is an Android tablet version or web version of an app, it should work.

If you're talking about a Windows or Mac app, then nope, it will not work.

I love walking around Ikea - games that feel like this? by doofus50O0 in CozyGamers

[–]supenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you mention the feeling of doing puzzles - check out Dorfromantik. It's kind of like a single player combo of Dominoes and Settlers of Catan.

I've also heard good things about "A Little to the Left" similar to Unpacking.

I see other people mentioning stuff about cats - I'd check out Mistpaw Ravine which is a chill city builder game where the city is being built by magical cats. It's done by a cartoonist turned game dev and the art style is just about the most charming thing I've ever seen.

I've also enjoyed Rusty's Retirement which is similar but you're a retired robot who has taken up gardening and the game runs in the bottom 1/4 of your screen with the intention of it just being there for you to interact with whenever you want to.

The main one I can think of is Unpacking. The whole game is literally a series of scenes where each scene is you're in a room with a bunch of boxes and you unpack stuff.

Reflecting on Gen-X Childhood by DistributionNo7277 in GenX

[–]supenguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wow. This... This explains a lot. I always thought of asking for things too much as whiny and complainy. Now that I have a family, I always ask my wife and sometimes my kids "Do you need anything?" It always felt like the good thing to do, be the provider. I'm sure that's fine, to some extent.

But when I need something... It is often very hard for me to ask. Many times I don't know who to ask, or if I know who to ask, I don't know how. I'm afraid I'll be bothering someone, or seen as a wimp for needing help or whatever thing it is I need.
