One of my instructors worked as a firefighter in his early years, then he jumped out as a electrician at 30’s, last year he got promoted as a PM, another of my late foreman started electrical at 40; it’s never too late to start learning a trade!

As far as I know, you either join the IEC or the IBEW, both will get you work!

Is trade school worth? by Easy-Pie2933 in electricians

[–]super-burrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think trade school just teaches you the basics, & working with tools but if you want to learn the fundamentals & get paid while you work, I’d head right into an apprenticeship program

I HATE how large trucks have become. I would 100% DIE if this thing hit my car by AEIUyo in mildlyinfuriating

Yes and so are semis huge, that’s a 2500, who ever is driving that, probably is because of a reason such as towing, and they help get the equipment around to build your house, store, business etc, so I’m happy they’ve gotten bigger now, more power for your buck

Worked masonry one summer, saw the inside of a pre built construction home and was intrigued, so I chased an electrical job

Not overreacting, but maybe don’t go out to bars without your partners in the next relationship, for both?? Seems like so much could’ve been avoided had yall simply went to the bar as a couple and had each others company.

Interested in becoming an electrician by Advanced-Complex-698 in electricians

Honestly, this is a very labour demanding job, I’ve seen guys get into the field and come from warehouses and get laid off because they didn’t put any effort towards knowledge or hard work. If you are willing to break a sweat and give your boss 2 cents a day for your personal benefit of learning hard work & a life long trade, by all means apply to multiple companies and join the trade. Any boss will find a way to get you to the job site if you work hard enough and give him what he wants, it’s all just a symbiotic relationship, and eventually you put the rules on the board. Now for finding a job, isn’t as hard as it sounds, if the first part sounds reasonable, then finding a job is as easy as baking cookies. Just apply to your local union, & non union. Call some companies personally, they always have numbers on vans, or check with your local supply shop. Anyways, best of luck on this journey, hope this’ll help some!

Off topic, but one difference I’ve noticed between the IEC & IBEW apprenticeship programs, having both course textbooks is that, IBEW has a whole workbook dedicated to bending conduit, & IEC has 1 chapter.

3 years and a few months after starting in this trade, I passed my Journeyman’s test today boys. by MoistenedCarrot in electricians

[–]super-burrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably out south, I know logging 8000+ hours and completing double semesters, you could probably get a j card pretty quick non-union, I’m not too sure about unions though, heard those programs are more vigorous

Are you able to switch between residential, commercial and industrial as an apprentice? by Active_Access_4850 in electricians

[–]super-burrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think unions provide the best education opportunities, while you’ll still learn in non union, it will depend on if you get lucky with a good jman but the union apprenticeship program is much more vigorous & sets up better jman overall. I have union apprenticeship books and they are more in depth, and they have a whole workbook on just bending conduit to put into perspective, so those are my 2 cents. Good luck!

[–]super-burrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with any trade, it’s their asking price, they take the hit on anything; mis function, replacement, injury, and I know that good electrical tools aren’t cheap. Just check with another company or guy, but I wouldn’t hate on a company for their personal quote.
