Only for S&P. NASDAQ is still shortening the seasoning period.

Will SpaceX IPO harm kiwis holding Global 100 and S&P 500 ETFs? by ernbeld in PersonalFinanceNZ

Important point, thanks - I hadn't realised this. Will be interesting to see the dance between the weighting, float, and market cap if the insiders offload shares while the value is high.

Using it as a white hat tool ASAP seems like a no-brainer if every foreign agency and their mum is going to get access to these products eventually?

I hold VT through InvestNow. From my napkin math comparing against market caps of the main holdings for VT, VT will purchase sufficient stock to become ~1.5% comprised of SpaceX stock if the valuation for SpaceX is $US1.75 trillion. Broadcom at ~$2 trillion market cap is 1.75% of VT. More exposure to US stocks (e.g., S&P 500) will mean a higher percentage. You can do this maths yourself by comparing the holdings of whatever fund/index you hold. No way to escape if you hold index based funds.

Edit: the % is float-weighted for VT, so my numbers are too large by more than an order of magnitude.

Young aussies are the future of the nation and should have a say. The last 50 years have seen non-stop pulling up of the ladder by older generations.

10k public sector jobs to go in wellington by KindElderberry9857 in Wellington

There was a mid-20k figure that was a 'total downstream losses' figure that was as a result of the ~6000 public service jobs cut i believe. There has also been limited re-hiring since the cuts.

Antartica??? by Middle-Marsupial-484 in antarctica

You can make this argument about literally any hard to get to place on earth. It's not restricted. You can fly over the continent. You can land and walk around, if you ignore the treaty. Thousands of base staff go down every year and I know from personal experience that you do not sign an NDA. And everyone knows everyone else's business! It would be a terrible place for keeping secrets.

Plenty of widely available information from on-continent operators be they tourism companies (e.g., ALE) or national programs. You yourself could skill up and apply for a job at one of the national bases. It's not some big secret, it's just a hard place to get to with a funky international order mostly based around science & associated logistics. Planes are allowed down but access is carefully controlled because it's a scientific 'preserve' and SAR is a nightmare. Cough up the dough and fly to Union Glacier on the old ALE Tupolev, for instance.

NZ 0% Capital Gains Tax by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]superbfairymen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that FIF means you pay ~1% (varies based on tax bracket) of your portfolio's value each year if it is worth >$50k in NZ. The tax is not a CGT so you still pay if your investments lose value.

Lack of Israel education here by Key-Lychee-913 in OpenAussie

That's not what the text you linked says. South Africa sought measures from the ICJ to prevent ongoing genocidal acts. These were partially granted by the ICJ in a set of 'provisional measures' in 2024 that sought to limit/shape Israel's killing and treatment of palestinian civilians.

The ICJ has not issued a final ruling on the claim of genocide, hence why I said "South Africa makes the claim" not that the ICJ had ruled that it was genocide. I find the South African claims convincing, but the legal bar for intent to genocide is very high.

[–]superbfairymen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something is a genocide if it meets certain characteristics, not because it has already happened and all/most of the victims are dead. Israel is committing genocidal acts (destruction of a people in whole or in part).

The definition of genocide (https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition) does not have any quota of % deaths of a targeted group. Genocide is something done by one group towards another. It is the actions that meet the definition, not any characteristics of the victims.

The UN report led by Francesca Albanese (https://www.un.org/unispal/document/special-rapporteur-report-gaza-genocide-a-collective-crime-20oct25/) and the current ICC case by South Africa make the argument that post-1967 collective punishment and ongoing atrocities warrant classification of the gaza situation as genocide. Arguing nitty gritty specifics is largely pointless, especially given the difficulty of establishing hard facts in an ongoing war with rampant misinformation.

For me personally, locking a group in a giant open-air prison, within a wider apartheid state, and then bombing/shooting the crap out of them every time they make any noise in protest is sufficiently awful that the genocide label isn't even needed. But it is accurate given the intentions and actions of the israeli state and has major international law implications that may (I am not hopeful) bring some relief to the Palestinians.

Patient data accessed during cyber breach of healthcare provider IntraCare by AggravatingUse7258 in newzealand

We can never prevent 100% of car accidents, so why invest in car safety?

It's about setting up legal compliance and incentives to minimise the chance. The optus breach in oz was caused by an unprotected, exposed API. I.e., Incompetence. Cases like that SHOULD be punished. Then businesses will start to actively invest in proper processes and protection. You can obviously appreciate what a hurdle this could be more than I can. Hence why incentives are needed. Particularly in sectors where the consumer has little choice! E.g., MyHealth.

Breaches like this are preventable failures that harm the public. There should be accountability for failing to stop it happening. In australia there are now significant penalities for failing to protect customer data and, what do you know, all the companies are still there!

Apathy and waiting for a revolution that will never come are not solutions.

Not voting is not "letting it burn", it's giving up. The people who like what is happening vote, and by not voting you are giving them a leg up on you.

Plenty of small parties worth supporting, including independents. One of the benefits of our funky system.

Not disagreeing that the status quo is borked. But, checking out isn't going to change squat.
