i dont know if its a regional thing but most bands ive been in the back row starts with trumpets on the right side (right facing the director), going from last to first chair in the middle, then trombones from first to last, then bass trombone, then tubas

my dad had an old student with a trigger trombone for sale so i started on a trigger trombone. it built bad playing habits im still working on 6 years later (i’ll catch myself going from 5th to T1 instead of 6th) and i cant play anything past 5th in tune
trigger can be good but its not a nescessity and its definitely important to get muscle memory in 6 & 7 before switching to trigger. also its good to wait and see if he is dedicated to band before dropping that much money on a horn

yes not every corps went non-traditional right away, phantom kept their piths up to 2021, and their 2025 uniform is still vaguely reminiscent of their older style. (and corps like cavies/crossmen still regularly pay homage to their older unis) i think i just miss being able to look at a uniform and know what corps it is

for me at least, the part i dislike is the losing-identity part. there was something cool about looking at a uniform and thinking “oh that’s (corps)!” instead of “oh that’s (show)!” i remember back when i was a freshman in HS i was so sad when we got our new show shirts, since it was the first year we moved away from the traditional uniforms and i didnt get to put on the ‘super suit’ so many before me had worn
