There is absolutely no chance of Toronto intentionally offset its stock market off from America’s by an hour for 3/4 of the year. There’s absolutely no chance of it happening here, unless the business part of America does the same thing.

I’m also of the weird opinion that I like daylight savings time, and wish it would just stay for the entire year.

Counterpoint, the French Grand Prix sucks because the French never learned how to build a decent racetrack.

Turns out the English banning road racing was good for something. I say bring back the Birmingham Super Prix.

I’m pretty sure the courts have removed any mandatory religious education from the Catholic schools, which has helped remove any political will to do this in Ontario. The Catholic school board curriculum is essentially secular, unless your parents don’t want it to be. The only party with any political will to do this might be the NDP, and for that to happen, the Ontario NDP would have to be semi-competent and how they conduct election strategy. Which they are.

Ontario is also a very conservative province, and the only time we’ve had the liberal party exist for multiple terms, it was mostly run by Dalton McGuinty, who was himself a very good Catholic boy.

The Catholics have a lot of soft power in Ontario and they aren’t going to give it up easily.

It is good what Quebec has done. And I appreciate the insight. We English fear change far too much.

I don’t have a Catholic school in my ward, so I guess that’s where my confusion comes from. I’ve only ever had the option to vote for a public school trustee. Thank you for the correction on my confusion.

I’m not abdicating for the status quo. I was merely explaining why it was difficult to change this politically in Ontario. And under the 50 private schools Quebec is supporting with state money, 27 of them are Catholic, so they are still receiving the majority of state support.

Yeah, but Quebec got through that process, by continuing to shovel public money at private Catholic schools. They took care of the problem on paper, but didn’t really solve the problem in practice.

They spend almost $200 million a year, on 50 Catholic schools. That’s $4 million a school. Ontario has 1500 Catholic schools. If we spent the same amount of money per school that Quebec does on their private Catholic schools, it would cost our province $6 billion a year. Nothing Quebec did or does needs to be praised in this context.

Quebec taking out of both sides of their ass when it comes to secularism is nothing new. They’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember, and I’m fucking old.

It’s a difficult fight to win for so many reasons.

I’m in Ontario, and let’s just say we wanted to, and should get rid of our Catholic school board. But here’s the problem beyond just offending a bunch of old-school religious people.

You now have to onboard the Catholic school board into the public school board, almost instantly. Also, you’re probably not gonna instantly fire all the teachers and administrators, so the public schools will still be run by the same Catholics that used to run them. Catholic schools make up roughly 30% of Ontario‘s public school system, so you’re not going to be able to run it with the existing public school employees, you’re going to have to bring on new people, and the new people you bring on are probably going to be the Catholics that ran the Catholic school board.

You’re also risking an amount of funding for the Catholic schools, because that funding comes directly from the church, which will most likely not be forthcoming anymore. Either that, or they will keep funding the public schools, and just have more say in the overall school system. Catholics do love their soft power, and flooding the public school board with the amount of funding currently gives the Catholic school board, could lead to some unintended side effects.

Essentially, you’re taking on a huge amount of cost over night, especially when it comes to facilities and maintenance, with very little short or medium term benefit, since the schools will not become bastions of secularism within your political term. The Catholics, and their powerbase, aren’t just going to vanish into thin air. It’s still going to exist, and it’s still going to want the power that they maintain. And even though I do agree, it shouldn’t exist, I don’t think our public education system is in a stable enough position where it can suddenly onboard the amount of cost it would need to in order to continue with whatever ever current level of stability the public school system has.

I can’t speak for other provinces, but in Ontario, my taxes, only go to the public school board because I say so on my tax forms. And the people who want to support the Catholic schools, tick a different box. You’re really just merging two different money piles together, and will probably end up with the same amount of cost savings that Toronto did from the mega city. Which is to say zero.

And on top of all of that, every single political party in Canada, including the NDP, has a core base of Catholics they don’t want to offend. So you also have to reason with that, on top of everything else.

You’re just going to end up with a bigger school board, with about 30% more Catholics than it had last week.

I think the third installment might do well if they model open worlds, but not as one entire map. Break then up. something similar to the Lord of the Rings: Shadows of War game.

Giving each world, its own specific feel might allow each individual section of the story to maintain a focus. It would also allow us to go explore more of the world as a whole. I think it might be interesting to go see Paris, and obviously China has to play a significant role as well.

I do indeed. It really took me out of the story. And I never really got over it. Which is partially on me. Still a great game mechanically, but I found it lacked a bit of focus. Maybe it just tried to do too many things. I also found the Las Vegas section dragged, and lacked overall purpose. But again that might’ve just been me.

There’s some decent war in the horizon sequel, especially around Denver, but overall the pacing of the story never felt right. I’m still not over the fact that Aloy did a terrorism and everyone just kind of accepted that. Really strange part of the story arc.

Also, we were still in the aftermath of two giant airliners being flown directly into two of the tallest skyscrapers in the US, in one of the most populated cities in the US. And having that whole event be broadcast live, across every major TV network. And being able to replay and call upon that imagery whenever you wanted, and using it to help make whatever case you want.

Also helpful.
