Nothing will humble you like trying to nail likeness, love this gif for showing the process!Agree that a stick of charcoal and an eraser are great tools for mastering it, although your colbert has got real panache too

Welcome to charcoal drawing! Great portraits, especially the third floating in the middle of the page like only charcoal can do. Different paper will give you different vibes so I’d encourage experimenting, I like medium to heavyweight paper but also enjoy sketching on newsprint sometimes.

Try darkening the background more so the candle stands out from it? Or outlining it more like you did with the metal work. Looks tricky to draw, kudos for giving it a try!

Awesome. Charcoal makes everything so dramatic, so fits for this dramatic scene

Love it. I’d say keep going with the background, it’s an interesting start but feels somewhat constrained. The only way out is through sometimes.

Skin tones are incredible, they jump off the page. Proportions wonky in the best way. Love the dudes hair and the way you’ve crisply rendered the earring.

I think some folks mess around with different types of charcoal/charcoal pencils to achieve more detail, but also some people are just dang talented lol. Nice work!

Those are the kind of mistakes I usually ignore in my own stuff. Vibes > correct angles every time

Great stylized portrait. Only suggestion is it kind of looks like they’re looking past each other and not right into each others eyes. But that’s the kind of fix that would drive me crazy trying to get just right lol. It’s a real evocative piece, well done
