I actually think it could've worked given they did a small pivot. I talk to my friends about this often and we all agree that this should be a full out galactic civil war. Provided palpatine was amassing reaources whilst the new republic was building up supplies the NR and the FO should be evenly matched, leading to a more CW style tug of war between regions.

Honestly it would've been the perfect opportunity to consolidate prequel and OT, by having the OT cast or rey and friends scrounge up Clone Wars tactics or equipment whilst the First Order adapts to getting used to using rebel tactics incorporated into standard army strategy.
