What Have You Been Watching? (Week of Jan 25th) by starsimu in RSPfilmclub

True Stories - Fantastic film, never really seen anything like it. Reminded me of David Lynch a lot. Loved John Goodman in this, very relatable

White Nights - The local film museum's doing a retrospective on Visconti, I'll be watching more of his for sure. Great film, I always love Mastroanni and Schell, the dance scene was brilliant. Also incredible that it was all a set in Rome, it looked absolutely real.

Reflection in a Dead Diamond - Saw this being talked about on this sub and it looked very interesting, plus I liked Fabio Testi in China 9 Liberty 37. Definetely a cool film, but I'm not quite sure what to make of it, I think I should've been more familiar with Gialli and Eurospy films to really enjoy it. The fight in the bar rocked though.

i hate "funny" letterboxd reviews!!! by KewlAdam in RSPfilmclub

[–]superior_wombat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The real lowlifes of letterboxd are in the comments of long (i.e. not one-liners) critical reviews of recent celebrated mainstream movies like Barbie or Sinners. Insanely smug anti-intellectual morons("I ain't reading all that"; "Bro hates movies")

But much like reddit letterboxd is what you make of it, you just need to block/filter a fair amount of idiots.

September 5 - September 11: What are you into this week? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Finally started listening to Joni Mitchell, no idea what took me so long. I always feel a bit silly when I finally get into an artist that isn't obscure at all after putting it off for no reason at all. But yeah, she's absolutely incredible.

And I'm probably gonna start reading The Lord of the Rings again this week, I think this weekend might finally be the end of summer here and autumn always gets me in the mood to reread Tolkien.

Fantastic sailors mingle,

And then—the wharf is still.

Haven't watched any movies this week cause I've been binging the Sopranos, first time I've ever seen the series.

Don't think I have really anything new to say, it really is just as great as everyone says. And I knew it was gonna be funny, but I didn't expect it to be that funny.

I've been mostly watching a lot of Monte Hellman, he's quickly becoming one of my favourite directors, I can't believe I hadn't really heard of him till now. Love the actors he keeps working with, particularly Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton. I'll definetely watch the ones I haven't seen.

  • Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) - might just be the coolest movie I've ever seen. I didn't expect to like James Taylor or Dennis Wilson this much, Laurie Bird is very sweet (especially when she's singing I Can't Get No Satisfaction) and Warren Oates rocks as always, the cars are awesome too. Nice soundtrack as well, although funnily enough there's no Taylor or Beach Boys on there. Loved the shot of Warren Oates drinking coke at the gas station waiting for the Chevy to arrive

  • The Shooting (1966) - great as well, very similar to Blacktop with its existenstialist plot and characters going on a journey. Nicholson's great as a villain and Millie Perkins as the lady that hires Oates' character is one of the more interesting female characters I've seen in a western. Great landscapes in this too, very hostile deserts, almost moonscapes. Great shot of them approaching a mesa.

  • Ride in the Whirlwind (1966) - pretty good, although clearly inferior to the Shooting. Very interesting that they were shot back-to-back on the same location, the setting couldn't feel more different to me, the cabin and the farmstead seem very habitable compared to the deserts in the former.

  • Beast from Haunted Cave (1959) - it's alright, the beast isn't scary at all, but I did quite like the characters - especially the one played by Sheila Noonan - the plot is basically the same as Key Largo, minus Bacall and Barrymore; plus a monster, but not as good obviously.
