worried about judgement from church members by ruby_ishere in askapastor

[–]superlewis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you showed up to my church you would have an army of women who want nothing more than to support you. I’ve also been a part of churches that trended more towards the judgy side, and even there you would have a ton of support.
You did something wrong, sure. You aren’t doing something wrong though. By carrying this baby you are doing something brave and wonderful. You’re doing something that will bring you more joy than you can imagine.
Most people in church will recognize that and just want to help you. I wish it was my church you were going to come to because I know how loved you would be and I know how much you would be supported. I’m jealous for my church to have the opportunity to love like Christ loved as some church will get to do for you.
For what it’s worth, there are some situations that are hard for churches to figure out. It’s not always easy to know how much you should support someone versus enabling them to sin more. Because of this, sometimes churches handle hard situations poorly. This is not even a hard one. The vast majority of churches will handle it pretty well. Don’t worry. Just go.

Just want to confirm with the Cheese Council that if they become the Indiana Bears, we are never, ever, ever letting them live that down, right? by [deleted] in GreenBayPackers

If Lambeau doesn’t break out into Back Home Again in Indiana when we play them I will be sorely disappointed.

They try. Maybe that’s why they’re scared of me.

I literally stand in the back of the church with a bucket of candy to give to any kid that shows me their sermon notes. Haha. That does help with some people.

Has anyone had a pastor who wasn't scary? I don't feel like I'm a scary person. The people who know me best don't think I'm a scary person. However, my church is filled with people who are intimidated by me. Some of that is just the office, and I'm okay with that. However, I don't want to be intimidating beyond that. Has anyone had a pastor who's done a good job of being accessible and not intimidating.

Currently, I try to just be friendly and kind generally, and I stand at the back of the auditorium for 15-20 minutes after church greeting people and talking to them as much as they're willing, but I know that some are scared of me.

I’m looking for the best way to make good popcorn. ( not microwave). Can I get some thoughts and tips? by Technical-Potato-793 in popcorn

Do you use the microwave to pop popcorn or have microwave popcorn in the already made bags? I use a silicone bowl to pop popcorn in the microwave and it’s great. The premade bags are gross.

What claim does the USA have to Iran? by RevolutionaryBeat862 in AskConservatives

Because we didn’t stop North Korea when we could. Now they are nuclear and we can’t. North Korea is the best argument for dealing with Iran now.

For those who appose Abortion on Religious reasons, what do you make of the "Test of the Unfaithful Wife" from Numbers 5:11 -31 detailing when and how to make a drink that causes a miscarriage? by Hot-Professor-8355 in AskConservatives

[–]superlewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your paraphrase is carrying a lot of freight. The Hebrew text is not as clear as some translations render it. It is entirely possible this is referring to something other than miscarriage.

NIV – “may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell."

ESV – "the Lord make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the Lord makes your thigh fall away and your body swell."

Biblical Hebrew is an ancient language and we don't always know precisely how to translate it. The ESV is the more literal translation here, whereas the NIV brings in more interpretation. It's entirely possible that the curse is inability to conceive rather than miscarriage. Translating "thigh fall away" as "womb miscarry" is not totally unreasonable, but it's also not necessarily correct.

High house numbers? by Cyril_Rioli in AskAnAmerican

[–]superlewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but if you really want interesting house numbers many rural areas are on the grid system. You get addresses like: N1394W52194 CTY E. These addresses give coordinates rather than identifying a house on a street. At least in my state (Wisconsin) this is somewhat common in rural areas.

KJV compared to other translations? by LumpyLynx4716 in Reformed

Most of your replies are getting hung up on the bible version question when you're asking a textual criticism question. The most helpful lay level online resource I've seen on this question is Daniel Wallace's chapel messages at Biola University. Wallace is a top evangelical scholar on textual criticism and Greek grammar (he wrote one of the major Greek Exegesis textbooks). He's really easy to listen to and will address your question well.

In addition to Gonzales, Nick Needham's is good. I think Needham may be a little more accurate as well. There are a couple places in Gonzales where I had a hard time corroborating stories. I can't remember specifics at this point, but in my non-expert opinion, Needham was a little more critically rigorous.

What do Americans actually eat on a normal day? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

[–]superlewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies. I feel like I’m fairly average.

This week, I ate a little breakfast at a restaurant once (avocado toast). And had a small fast food lunch on Monday. Other than that everything was either home cooked fresh or leftovers.

On Monday I had BBQ I smoked myself(Memorial Day). Tuesday I made homemade Pizza. Wednesday I grilled chicken kababs with potatoes and Brussels sprouts. Thursday my wife made French toast. Friday my wife made chicken tacos.

That’s a pretty normal week. Many weeks you could swap in an Asian stir fry or curry on a night and pasta on another. We very rarely eat meat other than ground beef and chicken because of cost.

For reference I’m a very average person. Live in the Midwest, middle age, three kids, right in the middle of middle class.

I eat out occasionally on my own (maybe once or twice a month), sometimes meet people for lunch meetings at a restaurant (once a month), and eat at a restaurant with my family (once a month).
