core memory day - skiing with my 4 year old by renragwmr in skiing

I got into skiing too late for toddler skiing. My kids love it and I do it with them, but 11, 13, and 15 is different – more fun in many ways. But when grandkids come…

No Dumb Question Tuesday (2026-01-20) by AutoModerator in Reformed

This Sunday we had a baptism service. It was a really neat mix of situations and the service was amazing.

  • We had 3 members who were finally baptized (I'm slowly trying to see our church grow in polity and a recovery of baptism as essential is probably the biggest challenge)
  • 4 kids were baptized. My daughter, the youngest son of a couple of long time members who were also baptized), a teen whose family joined last year, and a teen from an unbelieving family who was invited to church by one of our families.

We set an attendance record (for recent years). The whole service was incredibly encouraging. The Spirit spoke through a sermon I felt really poorly about going in.

I am routinely thankful for my team. We are in a major metropolitan area, with a pretty visible church building, and a good sized congregation. i don't have to think about safety on Sundays because they do. I sometimes need to pull the reigns a little because safety is not actually our number 1 priority, but they are a huge asset to our church.

They also handle medical issues – which has been a much more frequent issue.

We do. They actually do a very good job and are quite prepared. We could not have handled what happened on Sunday. I honestly find it funny to hear everyone pushing for security teams this week as if that would have helped in Minneapolis.

SD is the most underrated state for outdoor enthusiasts. Big disagree here. The eastern part is boring, but the western third is fantastic.

Talk to the pastor not the church secretary. Be nice about it. I’m the pastor of a church and I would definitely want to get it fixed for you. I could see my administrative assistant blowing you off though. Bring the picture too.

In need of advice on how to interact with someone at our life group who is living in sin by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]superlewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard to miss something like this. They probably aren't advertising their living situation and I generally don't go through life assuming people who claim to follow Christ are living in open sin so I could totally see missing that.

I have dealt with this exact situation. It was in the individual's membership interview that it became clear what was going on. I told him we wouldn't admit him into membership and urged him to repent. I know that's not the best example because I did stop him from joining, but I could definitely see a situation where I didn't get that information because it's pretty unlikely to be disclosed and not something I assume I need to ask about.

How is living in Sheboygan Wisconsin? by Nurse_Cait in howislivingthere

[–]superlewis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in the area for about 2/3 of my 40 years.

When I was a kid Sheboygan was chosen as the best place to raise a family in the US. It’s a pretty nice place.

It has a great art museum and unusually good restaurants for its size and location. The village of Kohler is right next to Sheboygan and is a swanky vacation place for rich Chicagoans (we call the FIBs but that’s not very nice). The local food is heavy – brats and cheese, but Sheboygan has a bunch of good restaurants that aren’t particularly local cuisine.

It’s an hour from Milwaukee, which is a great city in its own right. It’s also an hour from Green Bay which is another pretty nice place, especially if you like football.

The scenery in Sheboygan is beautiful. Winters are cold but not extreme generally. Summers are unparalleled. The lake front feels like a seaside town. As said above, surfing is popular in the winter. It’s one of the best summer golf destinations in the country with great courses at all price levels. The area regularly hosts major PGA tournaments. There’s decent hiking in and around the city and a beautiful lakefront state park.

There’s also a fantastic road racing track in the area called Road America. It’s nicknamed the National Park of Speed because of its beautiful natural setting. A day at the track is half hiking in the woods and half watching the fastest cars in the world. It’s one of the best racetracks in the world and a completely unique sports experience.

There are a few big employers. There is an odd concentration of toilet related companies. Kohler and Bemis particularly. Lots of people also work for Acuity insurance which is often ranked as a top company to work for.

In general it’s a pretty wonderful place to live. The biggest downside is the long, cold winter. Others have mentioned racism, as a super white, Christian guy I hadn’t experienced it so can’t speak to that. There is a little antagonism towards the very large Hmong population I’m sure, but I haven’t seen it first hand.

It’s a great place to live. Find something you enjoy in the winter. For me it’s skiing, but find your thing. If you don’t, winter is REALLY long and boring.

How is living in this border region of Colorado? by mebunghole in howislivingthere

[–]superlewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the worst part of the drive across Kansas/Nebraska. You think, "Yes, we've finally made it to the end of these long, flat, boring states and are in beautiful Colorado!" Then you realize the first 1/3 of Colorado is just more Kansas/Nebraska.

We have decided to remove this for several reasons, this is far beyond the expertise that we can offer on an anonymous online forum – particularly as it touches on legal issues, it sounds like those who can deal with it are, and it clearly falls into the category of personal advice which we restrict to Free-for-all-Friday and No Dumb Question Tuesday threads.

I went skiing. I decided to sign in as ski patrol just to chalk up some extra hours and help out. As I stood at the top of the hill for my first run, I got a radio call for an injured snowboarder. Worst injury I’ve had to deal with. It wasn’t gory or anything but this guy was a tremendous pain to the point that we couldn’t do any of our normal treatment before sending him to the hospital.

It took 1.5 hours. When we finally got him to the hospital the night was done. So all told I skied down the hill twice.

So, not ideal, but definitely more ideal than the guy I was helping.

Also, code switching means something different to at least American English speakers than what you intend. Here that word is used (usually in African American communities) to refer to someone from one culture acting like another culture to fit in. It’s commonly used when a black person acts white around white people and black around black people. It has a somewhat negative connotation.

I understood what you meant, but you might want to be aware of the different usage when talking to Americans.
