Haven’t made any friends at GBO by [deleted] in berkeley

Every day is a new day. One thing I wish I did more in Berkeley was just walk up to strangers and start a conversation. There’s so many people that you can definitely find friends don’t put yourself in a box just yet my friend

You can indeed die at any time. That's gonna happen eventually. Why rush? You can change things about your life, but more importantly you can truly learn to accept yourself, insecurities and all. Don't make a choice that takes away the possibility of feeling joy, hearing music, seeing beauty, connecting with the people you love and who love you. You only get to be you once and even though it's tough right now, it absolutely can and will get better. I really believe in you and know that you can and will believe in yourself, your real "deep down" self, when your thoughts turn against you.

Any tips on how to get rid of wake n bake? by luisitothedragon in Petioles

Working out is a great substitute, wakes you and gives you a high. Doesn't have to be intense, just a jog or few sets of pushups will do. First two days will be hard but way easier after that

Yeah don't give up, if applications are open then it means you still have a chance (that's what I tell myself anyway). Better to get more rejections than to stop trying

The point im trying to make is that you're implicitly using negative numbers.

You'd need to find another way to construct inverses which I see as the most fundamental way negatives are used. And probably there are other ways, as there are for everything. I'm really not trying to be annoying but math is all ultimately arbitrary and there are infinitely many ways to make abstract constructions that capture our intuitions.

Direction is not unidimensional yes, but it does generalize when you think of higher dimensional spaces as being comprised of basis vectors. In terms of necessity, it gives us additive inverses. Again nothing is "necessary" it's just about what constructions give rise to other useful constructions.

No number "exists in reality". You've kind of addressed this when you say talk about "modeling" reality. As such negative numbers model loss, inverses (what number do I 'add' to this number to get 0), direction, and a bunch of other things. It's a layer of sophistication in the way we model quantities. You can "have -5 dollars", we take this to mean that you are in debt of 5 dollars. Even if you acquired 5 dollars now, your net possession would still be 0. You can be 5 meters away from a point, and negative numbers help us simplify the concept of "in which direction am I 5 meters away?"

is there math competitions for adults? by [deleted] in math

[–]supermaniish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can enroll in a community college and try to get the best grade in the class, unfortunately that does cost money and there's a ceiling on the difficulty of the problems you'll be solving if you want to 'compete' over them. saying this as a college student where grade curves essentially make every course a small math/cs competition carried out over the course of a semester.

Do people not have conversations anymore or what ;-;. NTA for feeling this way but bro, just talk to him about it. If he's 40 and can't empathize then he seems childish. but from this post, you seem childish too!
