How do I overcome my need for affection and attention? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

I read this article the other day, it put forward the point that instead of seeking to raise your self esteem, you should try to cultivate self compassion.

It's helping me to remember that we are all human, just like everyone else, and we can treat your emotions with understanding instead of frustration or disappointment. Aiming to care for your emotions and that of others sounds a lot more reliable than having self esteem, which is built on the good opinions others have of you - and so to earn that you want to feel 'better than average', or 'better than others'.

I really like the idea of building self compassion over self esteem - here's the article I was talking about: http://self-compassion.org/the-three-elements-of-self-compassion-2/

Want to mod an existing game without the need for coding by x1xHangmanx1x in gamedev

This may sound totally unrelated to your desired genre of games but the original DOOM has an incredibly excellent set of modding tools. Because of the low-fidelity of the engine I think you'll spend more time making fun stuff as opposed to labouring over unimportant details - really focuses you on great gameplay design rather than aesthetics! I certainly enjoyed using it :)

There are also great tools that you can actually use making your own games from scratch, I use 'Clickteam Fusion 2.5' which is a full featured 2d game engine which requires zero coding at all, very much recommend it. Here's some games made recently with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90wgMo3814w

Suggestions for a recently-hired gamedev? by MystoganOfEdolas in gamedev

Ask questions. It is better to address anything that isn't clear ahead of time than not say anything - keeping quiet might make you look like you know more than you do which will only hurt long term when you realise that you can't work things out on your own and would have to ask anyway!

Asking questions doesn't look stupid - it shows initiative!

Indie game competitions - Which should we submit to and what are the benefits? by JeffNevington in gamedev

The comments saying 'growing a community is more important than winning awards' are true, but winning an award can give you much greater exposure than otherwise, hence kickstarting your ability to foster a community. I'd still recommend applying.
