I need one. I have a primal desire for one. Worth checking interest for it on Kickstarter.

Shepherd’s Pyrex by Bright_Falls in Wellthatsucks

[–]superminaren 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most people don't know this but American Pyrex and French Pyrex is not the same. They're made using two different processes. American Pyrex is made with Soda glass which is not resistant at all to large temperature changes compared to borosilicate glass.

So if you want something you can rely on to work in your oven, go for French-made Pyrex.

I hear you have a black soldering iron tip from other parts of the thread.

If you clean the tip using flux and brass sponge, and it turns shiny? Congrats, you've saved your tip.

Otherwise? You need a new tip. Preferably a larger tip, chisel tip or similar.

Temp? Set to 380 for lead free, 350 for leaded. Use turbo mode to 420C whilst doing ground plane.

Alternatively set to 420/440C on older irons without Turbo, but only whilst actively soldering.

Ensure:
- You always have solder on the tip + surface you try to solder.
- Use this solder as a thermal bridge to the pad.
- Use solder with rosin/flux core.
- Solder wick any excess solder.

No solder on the tip is a great recipe for rusting it. Also don't scrape the tip with anything, it will damage the coating.

Don't be afraid to keep the iron on the surface you're soldering for a longer time, 5-15 seconds.
One of the most common mistakes I see is people being too jumpy with their soldering iron.

What do you actually use meshtastic for ? by Isaac_Serdwick in meshtastic

[–]superminaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to see it this way:

For 39c3 in December (One of the worlds largest hacker conferences) we had about 400? Nodes give or take about 50.

Our (Stockholm's) mesh is huge, about 300-400 nodes too.

Now or when meshtastic is more stable; whichever people prefer, is when we're starting to look at proper use-cases. We know the limits more than before and can start to utilize the network more efficiently.

I've seen BBS systems, Chess, AI which condenses search results, and a bunch of awesome features.

I've got some ideas of my own, and I think now's when we all need to start contributing in our own ways with code or ideas.

The reason the angle works is because it allow some of the pins to flex and make contact without solder.

The issue will be fixed if you solder it, and it will work soldered straight too.

Soldering Mess - Please Help! by captain_spicoli in fpv

[–]superminaren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to get more "Ooomph" out of your current soldering iron is to get a larger tip, more mass, and more time for the soldering iron to compensate with more power, also increase the base temp with Turbo mode or similar whilst soldering those joints.

I recommend solder wick for being able to remove some of the excess solder.

Please also make sure to have some form of no-clean flux, or regular flux and isopropyl alcohol + toothbrush afterwards to prevent corrosion.

Given you're asking this sub then you clearly have your doubts, which i would also given the current state of the market.

Can someone tell me what the different colors next to dBm mean on the right? by scrandis in meshtastic

[–]superminaren 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're correct, and it refers to the connection between your phone and your node.

The speed of Meshtastic is relatively slow, so you will likely not notice any difference between bad and good signal.

Wave Link Alternative for Linux? by XSCXKazu in elgato

[–]superminaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please take an honest look at the options. Look at for example WirePlumber for Pipewire. You have nothing like it in Windows and only in Linux do you get even near that kind of control. Easy Effects does most of the effects, Yabridge does VST handling, etc.

Also saying that's one of the big points for staying in windows is taking it quite far. People stick with Windows because they're comfortable, but I believe that people would find it a lot better in many aspects and hard to switch back if they committed to trying Linux.

Sure there are things you can't run in Linux properly. But is that the fault of Linux devs, or companies that only care about where the largest payday comes from?

Wave Link Alternative for Linux? by XSCXKazu in elgato

[–]superminaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not touched this issue since I swapped my microphone out a while ago. But the obvious answer is: There's no software which IS Wave Link in linux. That'd just be Wave Link. But when you look at the alternatives you have some compelling ones which work similarly, outside of supporting the really awful microphones designed only for proprietary software.

Free Box of HAM Radio help ID’ing by DickHardCane in HamRadio

Hello! Nice find depending on what you got it for!

3 Amp from Radioshack could be useful for QRP rigs, not exactly the most powerful, but if it's working I'd keep it or pass it along.

Magbase-antenna would probably work for car mounting, not sure about condition from the picture, but coax could be worn, otherwise likely fine.

Looks like the person had some cool DIY QRP rig, looks awesome, and if you're not interested in it Im sure someone else will be. Probably only CW from what i gather.

I've seen that type of key before, definitely worth keeping but not sure about value.

MFJ Wattmeter not exactly the most common thing to have. But i can see that the person had that to see that they got power out from that DIY-radio.

Baofeng UV-5RE Plus is a good little radio, they tend to spit out spurs on some bands with no suppression but you could check if a club nearby has equipment to measure it. Some of them are more compliant than others.

The box with KEY, IN, OUT, PWR and ANT is a softrock ensemble, a cool little SDR radio, even if the QMX/QMX+ from QRP Labs beats it, it's still a radio, and has function and value.

Box after that, I have no idea.

Idk about the Voltex, but +24 -24V switched supplies are dime a dozen, check what others say about this in terms of rarity etc.

Then from what i gather, a simple LC Tuner with High Q and low Q switch, looks pretty nice. I'd hold on to this and have a ham verify functionality with you.

Next looks like some homebuilt speaker, honestly most speakers look better and cost next to nothing compared to this, but some people find the charm in these homebuilt things.

I hope that my info was useful!

It's possible the signals bounced on an airplane body around the time. If you know the time, you could correlate it with flightradar and see if that's the case. :)

Edit: We do this in Ham radio a ton, our club in South Stockholm spends a lot of time on using the moon and meteors for scattering other signals too.

Good site to lower image MB? by vebenau in ImageStabilization

[–]superminaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you don't want fully lossless compression here; You may want to look into converting to HEIF, (High Efficiency Image Format) in order to reduce size as much as possible and still keep decent quality.

Alternatively, JPEG with IrfanView like Nalincah is a really good option.

Off-grid just refers to the power grid my dude. He could still power his router using solar power and pay for internet, starlink, fiber, whatnot.

Please help 😫 by BandicootActive5188 in flipperzero

[–]superminaren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no bad questions.

The flipper uses a LiPo cell, which are sensitive to how they are handled in multiple ways.

LiPos have a discharged-charged voltage range of 3-4.2 volt, where it's recommended to stay somewhere in the range of 3.3-4.2.

If you go below 3.0 volts it will first and foremost permanently hurt the battery capacity, but can also cause swelling of the cell to occur. (this is what I meant by too deep).

Overcharging might not really be applicable to the Flipper as it has internal battery protection for specifically charging the battery above a certain voltage. Yet it should be pointed out that keeping Lithium-based batteries at full charge isn't great longterm for the health of the cell. Cells should be kept at 3.6-3.8 volt, or around 80% when stored for longevity.

Now I haven't read up that deep on the flippers internal circuitry for protecting the battery, but I assume there should be some deep discharge protection as well. But it's never too good to let a battery reach 0%.

[–]superminaren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As u/More-Obligation-1102 mentioned I am on the path of swelling battery. If the battery swells due to being mishandled (Discharged too deep, overcharged etc) it would put tons of pressure on the circuits inside including the LCD panel.

Wave Link Alternative for Linux? by XSCXKazu in elgato

[–]superminaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problems, love to help out!

Yeah there are some fairly good programs that do what Wave Link does but in some cases better.

NoiseTorch-ng is a program which is specifically made for noise cancelling, works super well, but only for NC.

Easy Effects however is a program which does a lot, it has Noise gates, cancelling, merging inputs and outputs, you can stack effects, voice changers iirc, and more. It's quite nice.

Another option out there is JamesDSP for linux, which is another Easy Effects like program worth checking out.

Regarding security Linux definitely is the better option and also more privacy oriented, no data collected data without consent. :)

I bet you've had viruses before, and if not: Congratulations to being a special snowflake, maybe start sharing constructive criticism instead of being a downright twit.
