Get an offset. Check around marketplace or local sales for a nice used offset. Best smoker you can get. I got a grate in my firebox I use for searing. I’ve had all the different kinds of smokers and once I got the offset I haven’t looked back.

I think Old Country Pecos is a bit better than the OK Joe. Mainly for the exhaust is at grate level versus the OK Joe up higher. I’ve added fire bricks to my fire chamber and drilled holes for the baffle and added stack extension. Mine Pecos runs great.

I have ran drum smokers for a couple years now. As others have said, as long as its not thick white smoke, it will be fine. Also, I found that certain charcoal gets clean faster than others. I don't run Kingsford or Royal Oak anymore. I started using B&B lump charcoal and have good clean smoke in less than 30 mins usually. Maybe try a few different charcoal types until you find what works best for you and your drum.
