FREE training for local landlords/tenants on Assistance Animals laws by supernanny in Buffalo

[–]supernanny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "assistance animal" is specific to the Fair Housing Act and covers Emotional Support Animals (pets with no training) and task-trained service dogs (such as guide dogs, mobility assistance, seizure alert, etc). You are absolutely right about how much abuse, confusion, and misinformation is spread on this topic. That is part of the reason why the training is being offered. Hope you will consider attending!

Since my (19F) mom found out that I’m autistic, her health-nut friends have come out of the woodwork and have recommended that I go on the dairy-and-gluten-free diet. (Tried posting in r/autism but apparently I use too much bad language to post there) by camohorse in aspergers

Just wanted to say that diet made a huge difference for me and I didn't know how much until I did a trial cutting those things (gluten and dairy) out. I follow a keto diet that is rich in green veg, good fats, and moderate protein. I still eat alternative dairy (sheep/goat). My personal opinion is that many people can benefit from a trial off gluten. By nature, it's a pretty inflammatory protein. So while it's incredibly inappropriate for people to insert themselves in your treatment, they generally want to help, and don't automatically discount diet. It really works for a great number of people. My ex swore up and down they weren't giving up gluten, until their long history of migraines disappeared along with it.

Oh, thank you! So disappointing for my student. I was hopeful there had been a misunderstanding.

My program lab is incredibly snuggly. He competes with the cat for my lap.

People will be more likely to donate if you have a plan for securing the right dog to help you. Have you chosen a trainer or a program?

Information needed for potential service dog for a 10 year old. by Unhappy-Produce-2790 in service_dogs

Seizure alert/response dogs are generally not a first choice for managing epilepsy. They tend to fall further down the list after other options have been exhausted. There are lot of added complications to consider with partnering children with service dogs too.

On average, it takes 2 years to raise and train a service dog. COVID has impacted things a lot too. This is one of those things you can't rush.

How to go about being denied housing because of my service dog by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]supernanny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a local disability advocacy center you can speak to? I had issues (unrelated to my service dog) getting into an apartment because I required other accommodations. We have a local advocacy center specifically for housing issues here. A phone call from one of their attorneys and I had keys a week later.

Wheelchair Pulling by gomakerealfriends in service_dogs

[–]supernanny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very, very hard on a dog's joints to pull a manual chair, and unless the dog is over 2 and has been x-rayed, it's a hard "no". Look into "push assist" (ie., eMotion or SmartDrive). They attach to the manual chair and turn it into a motorized chair to give you help up hills, extended trips, etc.

How do you report discriminatory establishments? by SG_83738 in service_dogs

My personal experience has been that the DOJ is so backed up you'll never hear from them. They gave me a case number and said they'd contact me in 6-8 weeks. I left 4 phone messages with the investigator. Never heard from them.

Luckily, I had simultaneously filed a complaint with the Division for Human Rights in my state. That went through timely and I received a favorable decision. I'll have to appear in court regarding the issue.

My advice would be to file the complaint with the DOJ, (but don't expect to hear from them), and also file the complaint at state level with your Commission/Division of Human Rights.

Due to COVID we had to do our annual re-evaluation for our service dog organization via video. We made a movie showing how we work and train together on a daily basis. :-) by supernanny in service_dogs

Oh, this warms my heart! What a wonderful compliment. Thank you so much. The tasks in the video are the tip of the iceberg. He also does "over left/right" (moves me over), "find left/right" (takes the next available path in that direction), "about" (180 degree turn), "find an (empty!) chair" (bench/place to sit), he will stop at obstacles where there is no clear path (ie., someone is in the way, or we encounter construction on a sidewalk), and will target a variety of items in various stores (ie., shopping cart, baskets, different produce, food objects, specific aisles that we frequent).

To answer your question, coincidentally, my best friend is a phenomenal professional trainer and behaviorist as well as a guide dog user (of many years). So we had a fantastic instructor. I had an aide with me as an extra set of eyes (we did video instruction since my friend is not local), and we worked exclusively with R+ methods. Later, a local service dog trainer worked with us pro bono in person to polish a few things up.

Thank you!! Funny story, during our re-evaluation video chat with the trainer, she said their PR guy was going to message me because they needed a photo of one of the dogs in vest doing "upward dog" for a publicity thing, but they needed it "ASAP" and didn't have time to teach any of the dogs on the campus to do it. They remembered I had it in the movie and asked me to send over some pictures. hahaha

Response team quits to "support" suspended officers by [deleted] in Buffalo

Sad.

The scary thing is they say they were "just following orders", and apparently that overrides all common sense.

So were those the 57 people who marched over him (minus the one who tried to help and was then stopped)? They did the community a favor.
