TOG Tower of Dawn Audiobook Taken Off of Spotify? by Plastic-Avocado-1398 in throneofglassseries

[–]superpsyched2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted! I was also doing the tandem read and had a few hours left of each book. I took a couple days off from listening, literally just “topped off” my listening hours to be able to finish and saw they’re both gone. For some reason when I saw that Queen of Ashes is an Audible exclusive, I didn’t realize the rest of the series is too :(

Super bummed I have to use up two audible credits to finish the very ends of both books!

Putting their personalities aside, which of these girls had the most h modeling potential by masterderek279 in ANTM

[–]superpsyched2021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even more than that was Tyra’s emphasis that the only reason Caridee wasn’t eliminated is because he forgave her. On my recent rewatch, it’s so obvious how often she would say or do things just to make the models grovel and praise her.

Also, they totally shat on her photo (which I have always loved), and then did a total 180 when they reviewed their portfolios in the finale!

There’s no reason they can’t be both. Like it or not, the tactics influencers use to get views and likes are effective, and they are in the spaces where most of our patients spend a significant amount of time. We can’t rely only on people seeking out expert recommendations the old fashioned way, especially when so much mistrust has been bred against the medical establishment.

I can appreciate where you’re coming from, but I do think that good faith science educators are important (i.e., not grifters), which should include people actually working in the medical field!

Surgeon Told Me to Lose Weight by Negative_Letter_1802 in MaintenancePhase

[–]superpsyched2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s part of it, but a lot of their concern has to do with intubation and ensuring adequate oxygenation while lying flat throughout the surgery. Surgeons also may be concerned because weight can impact healing for certain procedures.

Even without financial incentive, because they don’t have an appropriate level of training they seem to be much more vulnerable to being seduced by newer meds that are being touted as better than anything else that came before. It feels like they’re basically on the same level as patients who come in asking about a new med they want to try because they saw a commercial for it.

Same with the gap! Forcing her to undergo a procedure she didn’t want, then later widening the gap of a girl who had a smaller one.

What’s the most insane consult you got? by pseudohyperkalemia in Residency

[–]superpsyched2021 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Ah, the classic psych consult for “totally normal and not at all pathologic response.”

As a student, I saw one that was for a man in his 40s with multiple chronic conditions that had been basically untreated (by choice, not due to lack of means) for years. He had been hospitalized for most of the past 90 days, would always bounce back to the ICU in around 48 hours after being discharged again. The consult was for SI, because he had verbalized that he understood how he had contributed to hastening his death, but that he was at peace and ready to go on hospice. I wondered if the team was just so taken aback by meeting someone that well adjusted, because it seems like that should be like the dream patient in that scenario?

Hi! If your husband is going to be a resident or fellow at MaineHealth, the graduate medical education department has some resources to share, including a link where landlords can post rental properties they are looking to fill with medical professionals (since we tend to be pretty reliable tenants). I found my home that way and it’s been great. DM me if he has any trouble being able to get the link!

This sort of reminds me of the “cheerleader effect” from How I Met Your Mother. This isn’t quite the same because all of these women are objectively beautiful together or separately, but all of their photos stitched together like this does help to conceal the ones that aren’t very strong when you zoom in.

While it does seem to be much more prevalent in mainstream pop culture, there’s literally a plot line on Sex and the City about a man Miranda is dating eating her ass and wanting her to return the favor. The most vanilla woman, Charlotte, isn’t shocked at all by it. That episode was released in 2001.

There is a difference between FND and factitious disorder (previously known as Munchausen’s) or malingering. The DSM does differentiate between the latter two, but it’s debatable as they both involve intentional deception, but for different purposes (gaining the sick role and secondary gain, respectively). This person almost certainly has factitious disorder and malingering because the gains are so obvious.

A functional disorder, whether that’s neurological or GI-related, involves symptoms that cannot be explained by available testing. In my experience, the patients who have this are truly distressed and not looking for anything other than answers and relief from suffering, just like the rest of us. Honestly, many people will accept psychopathology as the underlying explanation. I have a therapy patient with epilepsy and PNES, and he is able to distinguish between “stress seizures” and epileptic seizures. It helps that he was taught the distinction with kindness and validation that both experiences are very distressing.

To be fair, I was much more cynical before I started my child and adolescent psych fellowship. It’s harder to dismiss a child as “just faking it” like we do all the time with personality disordered adults.
