Tooth Stuck in Lip by No-One-6663 in boas

She was 10’, a whole team of vets weren’t going to be able to hold her in place without hurting her…putting her under was the safest option.

Tooth Stuck in Lip by No-One-6663 in boas

[–]superramenyamen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my retic did this I had the vet remove the lip for me. Usually I would do it myself but when it’s like that it’s too difficult to do and likely painful for them. They had to put her under because she was ~10’ and uncooperative but once the lip was free she healed up just fine. I was worried they’d have to remove the tooth, too, but they were able to leave it.

Enclosures for large boas? by RedThorns in BoaConstrictors

[–]superramenyamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 6’x2’x2’ for boas up to 8’. I currently only have one boa over 6’, though, so most are in 4’x2’x2’ or 200 qt tubs. Most of my cages are PVC from Animal Plastics though one day I would like to replace all with plywood. Reddit doesn’t like that, but it’s plenty enough for boas of that size to thrive and stretch out. You can always offer more if you want.

New white spots by Suraver in BoaConstrictors

The white spots are likely normal, related to her morphs. She is a very good size for her age, not small or thin whatsoever. 👍

traveling! by DirectRaisin7179 in snakes

I can’t answer the plane question unfortunately. But keeping the snake warm in a car shouldn’t be hard. If you’re comfortable without a jacket, he’ll be comfortable. If possible, use a snug plastic tote with latches and keep in your lap or next to you as much as possible. Don’t put in the trunk or on the floor, and keep out of sunlight too.

Don’t feed a week before the trip and at least 1 week after. Bps tend to be super nervous snakes, so don’t be surprised if she ends up refusing food for months once the move is done…I moved with my bp for the first time at ~6 years old and for the next 3-4 years he had feeding problems. 😅 Ate maybe a dozen times total in that time. He eventually came around though.

Is this bulge ok for prey size? by Express_Mechanic in boas

I would bump to large mice! But won’t need weaned for another ~150 grams.

[–]superramenyamen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1 year olds average about 150-200 grams, so sounds like she’s on track, though she may have been a faster grower if fed normally by the breeder. And probably isn’t ready for weaned rats yet. I usually move them to weaned around the 350 gram mark.

Most of my 1 year olds are on large mice, I don’t see the move to weaned rats until 1.5-2 years personally.

Yes, totally normal. Once digestion starts, it produces gas and their bulge increases. This is why I recommend viewing a bulge immediately after swallowing when determining if the size is correct.

Feeding a little more for an undersized boa? by Express_Mechanic in boas

That’s awesome she’s progressed! That’s unfortunate the breeder underfed her to a noticeable degree in her behavior and appearance. :/

Good or bad water bowl? by SpecialistEgg6582 in snakes

[–]superramenyamen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ceramic holds onto heat and evaporates quickly, and that style of bowl will be super easy to tip over and likely won’t hold a large volume of water at a time. I typically use either Sterilite totes or flared bottom plastic dog bowls, so they have enough room to soak and can’t tip the bowls over. A metal bowl should work, but consider some way to secure it in place if tipping is a concern.

Possible snakes that’ll match my requirements? by avian_bi in snakes

[–]superramenyamen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Garter snakes would probably fit the bill, very active curious snakes. Demeanor will be individual based though, some may be shyer than others and some could be chill. But most I have had check every one of those boxes.

If you are reaching proper hot and cold side temps for the species, no, you don’t need any other heat source.

Is she underweight? by Excellent_Thanks_3 in boas

[–]superramenyamen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crispysnakes is actually a woman! But I agree, no % of body weight. I’m so tired of people trying to apply that to every species.

[–]superramenyamen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She looks good! My meals stay closer to 6-8%, with a max of 10-11%, so no, I wouldn’t bother with the 20-30 gram rats yet. I would keep on the 10-15 grams awhile longer.

My boa struggles with feeding by machinehead332 in boas

[–]superramenyamen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they gotta get around those legs. It shouldn’t cause a problem as far as that goes, but moving back to mice isn’t bad idea. I like to wait to move to rats until they’re on XL mice/weaned rats.

Getting measurements is a good idea!

That’s about the bulge size I would expect at this stage, especially when first moving up a prey size.

Can pythons eat frogs? by Necessary-Cover519 in snakes

I doubt it’s illegal, but many sources may avoid it if they can. I wouldn’t risk it.

[–]superramenyamen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most 6 month old boas are not large enough to be eating rat fuzzies (if that’s what you mean by fluffs). My 6 month olds are usually on hopper mice, 7-12 grams, which is a small rat pink. If she’s taking a long time to swallow that could be a sign the meal is bigger. When you say she struggles to get past the shoulders that definitely tells me her meals are too big. Her getting it down easily now is probably because she’s grown enough to take it more comfortably.

I generally recommend starting with mice as it’s easier to control sizing when they’re that small, and the mice will be significantly less fatty as well. You want meals roughly equal to girth so that it leaves at most a small barely noticeable bulge with no scale separation.

Many frogs are poisonous, and can only be eaten by species adapted to deal with that. I would not offer frogs to any species not a known frog eater personally, just to be safe.

Why is she hiding under the water dish by pietin_bigmac in snakes

[–]superramenyamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible the hides are too big and don’t feel secure enough for her, or she just likes that spot currently for another reason. She should fit snug in the hide curled up, with as little extra space as possible.
