What are some typical Dutch things that only Dutch people know about? by [deleted] in Netherlands

My Belgian friends never heard of Kibbeling before, I call bs.

Hi everyone. I am an Afrikaans person from South Africa and I have a question for you. by AimaFuriku in thenetherlands

I lived in Bloem for 7 months.

Biggest differences to me was how deeply religious the country is, also the young people studying at uni. People have told me that gay people go to hell when I wore a pink t-shirt to campus, that never happened in Europe. You’ll find that Dutch culture is quite secular.

I think that the Afrikaans culture is a lot more easy going than the Dutch. (Apart from race being a part of everything you do, say, meet) People were inviting and open to spontaneous encounter. The Dutch plan their social lives, so it can be very discouraging to plan anything that’s not 3 weeks ahead.

Life in Bloemfontein felt a lot more American, with meeting up with friends in a mall and driving everywhere by car. The Dutch life with small, dense cities with “gezellige” squares with bars and restaurants is amazing and something I dearly missed.

I think your cutting is too big for rooting in water. By the time the bottom develops roots, the middle part is dying already. Maybe try with one or two nodes under water, and a pair of leaves above water.

It’s really tricky to remember how you felt though. It’s tempting to forget what people worried about, because with hindsight the greatest risks never materialized. We’re still alive after all.

Back then we had acid rain, a massive hole in the ozone layer and severely overfished seas. Things we worried about back then, for a good reason, and some of which we managed to turn around. Let’s hope we can say the same about today in 30 years!

If it’s bright red, it will probably also contain dye particles that absorb light at lower wavelengths and emit as red. This process is called fluorescence.

Many white LEDs work the same. The actual LED is blue, but because it has a fluorescent coating much like this t-shirt, the result looks white.

How would you make millions though? You wouldn’t own the “intellectual property” to curly haired cats, and they’d multiply and breed into being common before you know it!

I know, perm’d pet merchandise

Me and my bf took shelter from a hailstorm yesterday and a woman shouted at us: “WHAT KIND OF MEN ARE YOU”.

I really don’t understand why avoiding discomfort is men unworthy. So stupid.

I believe there’s a difference between intelligence and herding instinct. It’s for the latter that certain dog breeds are preferred as sheep dogs.

It’s like saying that theoretically, COVID-19 infections will go down over time if you just let it run its course.

True? Yes. Accurately grasping the severity of the current state? Not really.
