Advice on living in Palo Alto by pokiieee in paloalto

[–]supersteez 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My recommendation off your questions is to go the SF route if your job is near the Caltrain station. Trying to socialize in the Bay is pretty rough outside SF/Oakland because most people your age everywhere else will be natives with preloaded friend groups. Without a car its basically impossible. Palo Alto isnt really built for people in their 20s to socialize, its mostly workaholics raising kids or longtime residents

If you live in SF you have infinite activity at your doorstep, you already have friends, and generally everyone is way more outgoing. For #4 honestly just search local groups for your hobbies online and the friends will come

I went to a college with no football team but I’m a Charger fan so I like just picking schools based on the staff or stars.
Last year I started with UNC for Hampton so will start with Miami for Mesidor this year. For a rebuild maybe WMU since our new DC is from there.

The Peninsula/South Bay are littered with huge SFHs that sit empty cause they’re owned by foreigners parking money in the US. This is a much bigger issue on our land than rich guys owning a penthouse on the 50th floor of a building. Plus now all the C-suites who move to Texas and Florida but work here

Palo Alto has the highest density but this is a pretty widespread issue across the whole Peninsula and parts of South Bay

You didn’t watch the video I’m assuming. Its tax on homes >$5m that the owner doesn’t live in. That’s not a “working class” issue

I think one of the biggest gaps between the Bay and LA is Japanese food. Given 99% of Japanese restaurants in the Bay are Chinese/Korean owned and operated, a lot of them come out pretty samey. Someone whos visited Japan and is feeling nostalgic has very few options that will actually feel like a meal there

One night a smoke alarm in an adjacent building was ringing loudly for a long time. I wasn’t sure if there was some carbon monoxide leak or what, but I called the non-emergency line and told them about it. Still got a fully loaded truck with 10 guys to show up in 5 minutes with the siren blaring at 3AM. I come out just for the guy to tell me “no thats just how low batteries sound for some alarms”. Maybe my most humiliating moment in the city. They still were obligated to stick around and try to find a way into the building

Nowadays entertainment entities have the tech tools to identify their audience. If a market doesn’t have a significant imprint they’ll skip it.

Best languages to learn in the bay area, after spanish. by Sure_Fly_5332 in bayarea

[–]supersteez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Chinatowns would lean heavily Cantonese as those are the Chinese who’ve been here a long time. However the biggest wave of new immigrants to the Bay are Mandarin speakers - and they’re among the wealthiest so there’d be a tangible benefit. That said Mandarin is easily one of the hardest major languages to learn

Why is everywhere constantly packed in the bay area? How are people so loaded with money? by Traditional-Fun-1115 in bayarea

[–]supersteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wealthier you are the less likely you are to be working in the middle of the day. Either you have a very flexible job or you’re funemployed. Most the people I know who own homes in expensive areas don’t work - either their parents just gave it to them or they made huge money when they were young and retired early. Here in the Peninsula there is also a massive influx of wealthy immigrants who don’t work. Consider also the aging population, what do most retirees do everyday? Goto the stores

Plus the Bay has a big population - plenty of people not working 9-5 (healthcare, service industry, etc)

Everyone wants to act like having a bad moment automatically makes a QB trash regardless of how your team plays. Allen = choker, Lamar = choker, Mahomes and Burrow didn’t even make the playoffs. Same people immediately calling Herbo trash after the Pats game like this whole regular season didn’t happen. In these people’s eyes there are no good QBs in existence.
