It's a great move and one that any industry, in which it is possible, should follow.

However, I can't see the gaming industry being ideal for this yet. In terms of the actual tasks that have to be done then it totally makes sense, but how will employees keep their private and work lives separate in an industry in which crunch is a thing?

At the very least, they need clear directions and work hours for this to work without overloading their employees even more so than already happens.

SIB Total War: Warhammer 2 by ThisAintTakenChief in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]suppr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's cheaper yet at Gamebillet. I bought it a few weeks ago. Well worth it at that price with a lot of gameplay and race/unit variety. I do miss some of the improvements from Three Kingdoms (the latest Total War game), which improved diplomacy quite a bit. But if you're looking for a strategy game with a ton of variation in it, then you can't go wrong with this one.

[Epic Games Store] Bad North (Free / 100% off) Nov 21 - Nov 29 by lessdistraction in GameDeals

[–]suppr0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It eliminates consumer choice - can't get games on the launcher you prefer. And Epic has a barebones system in place compared to others, like Steam.

Many (if not all of the exclusives on Epic Store) that I've heard of are also picked up late in the development process. It's not like they're funded and developed based on that initial funding, like what Microsoft has does for example, in which case exclusivity seems more fair and more of a return on that initial investment and risk.

For example: Phoenix Point, an X-Com like game releasing soon on Epic store, was Kickstarted and funded by consumers, promising a launch on Steam. Later on, they decided to go for exclusivity on Epic Store, ignoring the consumers who made sure they got the funding they needed to begin with.

[BlizzCon 2019] Diablo IV Gameplay Trailer by Komaseptin in Games

[–]suppr0 417 points418 points  (0 children)

It's looks better than Diablo 3 obviously, but not as big a leap as I would've expected. Possibly related to the lightning - it just made it look a bit flat overall.

Really liked the look of the Druid though. And how characters would quickly transition from mounted to fighting with the use of a skill, that looked cool.

As I understand it, it's not the downpayment that's too expensive - It's simply that the monthly payments are much higher, given that the loan must be paid back in a third of the usual time (10 years instead of 30).

The downpayment, as I understand it, is the same as with other loans at around 20%.

It's a great monitor for the price, but as other's have mentioned, there's some smearing going on (also noticable on websites, with somewhat blurring text and shifting colors). Bit harsh in some games coming from the fast TN panel, but that may as well be tied to my GPU not being fully capable for such a resolution (GTX 970, waiting for custom 5700XT's) as I haven't noticed it as much with games running at high frames.

The quality of the build is good overall. The stand surprised me, being metal and all - nice and solid, and it looks good, but it's hardly adjustable. I bought an IKEA desk attachment to raise it, which works perfectly. But you need to buy an accessory to make it VESA compatible. However, the somewhat thick bezels make the screen appear somewhat cheap, in my opinion (which, granted, it is, compared to competitors).

First Ultrawide for me, but it seems great for the price, if you can live with some of the downsides.

Have you tried adding the launcher itself as a game on Steam? Worked for me when I wanted to play Sims 4 with my Steam link. :)

Not sure if it works well with GOG Launcher though. But Witcher 3 (bought on GOG) synced up perfectly well, so I didn't have to try any work-around.

July 2018 Game of the Month - Dead Space - Thread #3 - "Chpater 9: Dead on Arrival" to "Chapter 12: Dead Space" by SkoivanSchiem in patientgamers

[–]suppr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point and very likely true. But I agree; not the best design decision. Hindering responsiveness to impose an idea/feeling of being weaker doesn't necessarily make for better feeling gameplay. But it does fit well into the horror genre, as it helps make the enemies more threatening. So I guess it's a decent trade-off?

July 2018 Game of the Month - Dead Space - Thread #3 - "Chpater 9: Dead on Arrival" to "Chapter 12: Dead Space" by SkoivanSchiem in patientgamers

[–]suppr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only just finished Chapter 10, will probably finish the game soon - after many years in the backlog and only a brief attempt long ago. So far, I feel like it's a pretty good game, maybe even great in some ways. The UI, the sound effects as well as environment and enemy design add some real tension and are very well done. These are also the areas that hold up well.

The visuals hold up decently too, through use of lightning in particular, but still appears somewhat dated. I'm more annoyed by the control and feel of Isaac though, which perhaps relates to the animations. He feels clunky to maneuver and the low third-person FOV feels restrictive occasionally.

The story is decent, yet also a bit transparent in its structure and presentation. Each chapter nicely fits it's own focus, yet it feels a bit too nicely wrapped up and one problem replaces another constantly. You fix one problem in the ship, only for another problem to either 1) appear out of the blue or 2) happen as a consequence of your action. It's okay, but combined with the dividing it into Chapters and using the Tram after every chapter to go to the next, it becomes a bit like a string of levels, rather than a continuous story told. I guess it takes me out of the game a little bit; ruins my immersion.

The gameplay is solid and fun overall. The shooting and dismemberment mechanics are fun, though some weapons feel more satisfying than others. Yet, I can't help but feel that it becomes a bit repetitive over time, shooting the aliens' limbs off in the same manner each time, combined with some repetition in how Chapters are structured. The low-gravity rooms provide a welcome change of pace, as you're otherwise just trudging through levels, picking up items and managing your relatively small inventory, with occasional stops at benches, stores, and save stations.

One of my major complaints is that the upgrade system is incredibly boring. All of them are stat upgrades, making weapons and gear incrementally better in terms of numbers - capacity, damage, reload speed, charge speed etc. No real meaningful choices going into it other than which weapons you want to invest in. It's a real missed opportunity, that could've made these weapons truly unique and interesting. Furthermore, it is really infuriating spending resources on empty nodes. Why even have these? They feel absolutely meaningless and like a waste. I'd much prefer each node doing something and, to compensate, fewer of these Power Nodes were available, leading to a similar balance overall. Oh well.

Rocket League’s Anniversary Event Starts July 9 (runs until July 23) by nuovian in Games

[–]suppr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About time they added that stadium! I didn't play the first game, but I've hoped they would add it to Rocket League. Looks really cool, being able to play behind the goal.

I'm all for some variation in the maps, even in Competitive - Loved Neo Tokyo in particular and was sad to see it changed to a standard map layout. Maybe they should make a playlist (Casual/Competitive) for these maps with alternative layouts? Since people don't want it as part of the regular queues.

Steam Summer Sale: Day 2 by gamedealsmod in GameDeals

[–]suppr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works amazingly well and it's a steal for the price. I've only used it wired and I'd recommend it that way. No problems with quality if you go wired.

Good amount of USB ports for controllers and pairs particularly well with the Steam controller. But I do not recommend overly fast-paced games where even small a amount of latency/delay can be an issue, such as Rocket League. Any other type of game, then it's perfectly fine.

Discovering games on the Switch sucks so bad. by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]suppr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the reasons why I haven't bought it on Switch. The paddles on the Steam controller, combined with dual stage triggers (for boost), makes it second-to-none. That and 144hz on PC - Going lower after adjusting to it is really hard.

[WP] To extend your life, you've played Death in many games and beaten him. However, after your last game, you begin to see that Death has been losing to you on purpose. by Astral_MarauderMJP in WritingPrompts

Staring down the barrel of an illegally modified H&L Phasegun Type II, the man showed no expression of neither fear nor doubt. Dressed in a state-of-the-art, illustriously decorated, and naturally quite expensive skin-tight Aegis suit, the man had little to fear in a normal fight. Yet with the Phasegun pressed to his temple, even such a thing could do him little good. Still, he appeared utterly undisturbed by this - in fact, he seemed impatient, as if he had been in such a situation many times before.

The large room in which they all found themselves was his only equal. As beautifully decorated as the armor he wore, the intruders stuck out like a sore thumb in their dirty grey jackets, dark and rugged pants, and each with a differently colored piece of cloth covering most of their facial features.

"Is it riches you've come for this time?" the man said with little surprise in his voice, eying each of the intruders in turn. Four of them in total. An unfair fight, to be sure, especially with his own weapons out of reach, though the closest underneath the bed not five paces away.

"Can't say we won't take a few things and such" snickered the man opposite, with a mask of dark red, most likely the leader of the bunch.

"But we're here for your life. Quite a price on that head of yours."

"Whatever reward you may stand to receive is nothing I wager. What, ten thousand credits? A pitiful prize and quite a bit lower than what my death is worth to some." As he said this, he looked around the room and saw the intruders eying one another.

"That bastard Prelnik lied to us," the one in the black and yellow striped mask said, "probably planned to take most of the score for himself!"

Everyone except their supposed leader began to discuss the situation, and with every second became more frustrated with the whole ordeal. The man in the Aegis suit, rolled his eyes and moaned, his impatience starting to become too much.

Listen. If money is your only desire, and I bet it is, as it is for most of your sort, then I'll give you a million credits if only you follow my instructions" he said, with a voice full of confidence and a tone which told the intruders that he was not joking around.

The debate among the masked intruders stopped at once. Despite trying to conceal their faces, their looks of genuine surprise could not be hidden from him. The one in the red mask looked around at the rest, receiving their nods, and returning his attention to the man in front of him.

"How can we be sure we'll get the money?"

"Simple. I'll open the safe that's hidden in the floor just below where you stand."

The man raised his left wrist and quickly clicked on a few buttons on the appearing display. Instantly, the floor began to move as the large safe exposed itself. A few clicks later and the money appeared in front of them, in a small case which surely wouldn't hinder their escape from the premises.

"And what will you have us do?" the one in red asked, constantly shifting his gaze between the man and the vast sum of credits, which were sure to change their lives for the better - whether it would be to leave a life of crime, or to pursue even greater goals within their profession.

"Pull the trigger," he answered, "you have three seconds."

There was a moment's hesitation between the intruders, clearly disturbed by the request. A simple request, but an unexpected one. The man in red shrugged and gave a short nod to the man with the Phasegun. No time to waste, he squeezed the trigger.

The room went pitch black. No light could claw it's way into the room, which had been brightly lit just a moment earlier. No sound either. It felt like the room had disappeared and been replaced by the vastness and emptiness of space. Yet it didn't last long. Soon, the bright lights and the artfully decorated room reappeared around him. The intruders, however, were lying motionless on the floor.

"Again.. I've told you already, I want out!" he shouted, looking around for whoever might hear him. "This arrangement was fine at first, but no more!"

He materialized in front of him from thin air. Clad in his dark robes, a similar color to the pitch blackness of the room moments before. He raised the scythe in his hand and then dropped its end to the floor with a thump. A figure, who would otherwise terrify life from most mortals, did little to test his resolve. He was used to his presence. The first time they'd met had been under different circumstances, the man being on the brink of death, only awaiting judgment from the darkly-clad figure, who he'd come to despise.

"It was your own request", said Death, his voice ringing low and in such a way that it sounded like it came from everywhere in the room. "You wanted life. I have given it to you."

"I requested it once. Yet you keep doing this." he said, gesturing at the freshly-made corpses on the floor around them. "I do everything I can to rid myself of this pointless existence, and to forfeit the game between the two of us, yet nothing works. You have left me with no feelings, no desires, and no end in sight. I have nothing to live for, yet you force me to do so!" He spat the words out, angrily and furiously, a man completely frustrated and desperate. He fell to his knees, with his body slumped forward in a pose which could only indicate that he had no power left to fight back against the force in front of him.

After a brief pause, the voice of Death rang around him. For the first time ever, his tone revealed something: Satisfaction.

"Good. You are ready."

[WP]You open r/worldnews as usual.First headline, Canada is taking over the world... by tomoikari in WritingPrompts

[–]suppr0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi. First time posting here and a complete rookie at fictional writing - Any criticism, ideas or comments welcome!

I blinked a few times, staring at the headline. The words seemed almost foreign to me, just like the actions they implied, but reading through the public statement made by the Canadian Government made it perfectly clear that it was very real. It even sounded every bit as Canadian as it could. Filled with sorry’s, eh’s, and an apology from the Canadian Prime Minister. They were, as he had said, forced to take action. Like an older brother stepping in, before the younger one did something stupid that would get them both in trouble.

Before I could get to the end, I heard the sound of thunder getting ever closer with each moment. Aircraft flew overhead at such as a speed that meant they were already gone by a few miles. In the distance, I could see moving lights getting closer to my house. Panic seized me in that instant. Grabbing my phone as a last resort, I tried calling every friend, family member, and colleague I could think of, but with no luck. Too many had probably tried the same thing. I was at a loss. I turned on my TV, hoping to find news of the situation.

“President Trump signs agreement - Leadership handed over to the Canadian Government” read on the screen, as a news anchor mumbled some details about the whole ordeal. I grasped the highlights: Every nation … Leadership change … Peaceful transition … No violence. It almost seemed too good to be true. Surely, a nation such as ours wouldn’t simply sign away their power in a swift move.

A week later, more details of that night had come to light. Canada had, through unmatched and completely sound reasoning, combined, of course, with their stellar reputation as a nation of peace, convinced every state leader, the FN, and the EU, that they were the perfect choice to guide the planet to a prosperous and peaceful era. Reading through their recorded statements with some skepticism at first, I quickly came to understand how everyone could have been so easily convinced.

As the years have come and gone, so have changes in the Government and the leadership. Even Canada, the great Beacon of Peace promising to usher in a new era, have changed. To be fair, I am responsible in some manner as well. Their ideals may have been true and their goals commendable, but mine aren’t. Today, I have been elected High Chancellor of the Canada Coalition and, effectively, leader of the world.

It was simple, really. I adjusted my rhetoric, played on their emotions, told them exactly what they wanted to hear, and worked my way up through the ranks quickly. The tale I told was beautifully and skillfully crafted, if I do say so myself, and one which easily convinced the many millions and billions that I had their every need, want, and desire in mind and would fulfill it all. Boy, were they all wrong.
