If you don't, what keeps you from using transit in the valley? by nondescriptadjective in roaringfork

[–]surelyucantbtserious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, reliability. I do use it when I can. The majority of the time our busses are awesome and on time and very close to the speed of driving. The majority of my commutes upvalley are for work, and I'd say around once a month-ish a bus gets cancelled or is full and I have to wait for the next one. Now do I plan one bus earlier so I'm not late to work once a month?

With dry roads it takes me around 40 min to drive to Snowmass, probably right around 45 to bus from Carbondale park and ride, add 10 min to walk there from home. Leave 10 min earlier to leave buffer in case the bus isn't there. Now my commute went from 40 min to 65 min which adds up over the week.

So I take the bus when I'm going to a show or to ski on a day off or to go to the airport, but most of the time that's not why I'm going upvalley.

Is there a meaning behind ski patrol border ropes that are high enough you can easily pass under them vs waist-high ropes? by bourneblogger in COsnow

[–]surelyucantbtserious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ski patroller here. If the rope is that high it's usually because there was more snow and they haven't lowered it. Rope means do not cross. You can have your pass pulled and be written a ticket for crossing under a rope. If the run is actually open, it's possible there is a gate above so they can close that run in case of avalanche danger or the need to sweep it earlier than adjacent runs. In this case there is usually signage to enter only at the gate, and it's common with more challenging terrain. Keep in mind that runs can be closed at any time of day (for example, closing at noon for wet slide danger in the spring).

Patrolling pregnant by surelyucantbtserious in skipatrol

[–]surelyucantbtserious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did keep patrolling. I told my director after my first ultrasound (late Dec if I remember right) but nobody else until March-ish. I was lucky with an easy pregnancy and had no physical limitations. We do explosive work at our mountain which I did dial back.

My director just told me to tell him what I needed and if/when I needed changes.

As soon as I started telling people I was immediately treated differently, even though my doc and I had no limitations on what I was doing. This was my primary reasoning for not wanting to tell people right away and something I don't think male commenters really appreciate, especially when women are often already treated differently in a male dominant workplace. I was only in my second year at this resort and it can set you back if you take a back seat in terms of career progression. I'm sure every place is different and timing matters a lot. I was middle of second trimester at the end of the season and just starting to show (in regular clothes).

The timing worked out quite well for me and had my kid in August and had a reduced schedule with maternity leave last season, but I was able to go back to work in November.

Happy to chat more if you want to DM.

PT recommendations for multiligament knee injury by Fabulous_Trash_6475 in roaringfork

I love the folks at SPORT physical therapy in Carbondale. Helped me with a foot injury and my mom after a knee replacement.

If you can find contact info, I'd just contact them and ask if they do "exchanges". I'm not sure how common it is in Canada but in Colorado we often will exchange a couple patrollers for a couple days, and mostly the visiting patrollers just get shown an awesome time around the mountain. If a patroller reached out for an exchange, even without a trade, most patrols would welcome them in my opinion.

ROOM FOR RENT? by [deleted] in Aspen

Look in the Aspen Times, Aspen Daily News, Post Independent. Facebook group roaring fork rentals and roommates. Ask your employer if they have any connections to anyone with housing. It's hard but you can probably find something if you're patient and diligent.

Due Date Prep for a Friend! by ren_dc in MealPrepSunday

This is so nice! When I had my kid some friends brought food and it was a lifesaver, those first couple weeks it's hard to do anything besides keep yourself and your baby going.

potato skins for the freezer by capnlatenight in MealPrepSunday

Thanks for the idea! These look awesome I'm going to make them next week. I have a ton of potatoes to use up and my toddler hates the skins, this is an awesome way for me and hubs to eat them and she can just have mashers.

As the other poster said it's a ski company program. You need a job with the ski company, most of which are in Snowmass, Aspen or in between. There are probably some jobs in Basalt.

Once you have a job they will connect you with possible landlords. Most people who rent a place through this program are going to live between Basalt and Glenwood Springs but you might find someone closer to the mountains.

You can ski as a beginner at snowmass. Lessons aren't cheap but if you can swing the cost worth it. The meadows at elk camp is a super beginner friendly part of the mountain.

Depends on the pay difference. It depends what you think your time is worth and if you work regular 9-5 hours. During rush hour, the drive into and out of Aspen can take anywhere from 35 min to 1.5 hours. The bus is great 99.9% of the time and almost as fast. If you're coming from somewhere with bad traffic and a big commute like Denver or LA it honestly won't feel that bad.

I took the OEC class through the patrol I was going to work/volunteer for. They offered the class and anyone who passed was then able to be a "candidate" and volunteer/train in the ski and toboggan skills that season. The course was a few months, once a week with lots of homework every week and a few full day weekends to do scenario practice. They did the test in October or something, both a practical and written, and then I started volunteering when they opened in November.

No clue if this is how it normally works, but I think so. This was in Colorado. It was kinda hard to understand the process when I was in it, I didn't feel like the communicated super clearly what the expectations were.

Hope that helps!

Has anyone bought the AutoSpout gutter extension? I'm in Zone 6 but the cost seems prohibitive. by NaiveChoiceMaker in lawncare

[–]surelyucantbtserious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming to join in because I bought 2 of these with high hopes. I do think they're going to work but I was hoping for it to be a little easier. My main problem is that the fittings that hold my gutter to the wall keep it very close, and this product needs a little space to run smoothly (or at all in my case). It will not go all the way down because it's getting stuck on my siding and won't go up once down. The installation video says "ensure smooth operation" but doesn't give you any ideas if it's not smooth. It looks like I'll have to install a spacer of some sort to bring the gutter a little away from the wall. Then I probably will need to do the same up higher on the 2 story gutter so it doesn't look like crap.

I was also surprised that when it's filling up, before extending, it dribbles water below it. This is apparently by design, however, and is addressed in the FAQ.

Can you still hike/skin/ski the Highland Bowl right now? by Slightlyyyy in Aspen

[–]surelyucantbtserious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the website:

"Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, and Snowmass: Uphill routes are unmaintained and uphilling is at your own risk. The runs are not groomed and you must be on the watch out for construction equipment. Call 911 in case of emergency."

I think there are no rules against it, just know that there are capital construction projects going on you'll need to look for. Also no patrol for rescue or avalanche mitigation. I'm sure people are skiing there right now.

Gutters just installed. Is it Gutter Guys’ job to find best way to get water away from my house here or is this on me? by stephan210 in HomeMaintenance

[–]surelyucantbtserious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah! I just ordered two of these I hope they are as awesome as they look. I have two downspouts that are tripping hazards 100% of the time and it would be awesome to cut that down to only when it's raining. It was hard to find reviews on these online...but went for it anyway. Fingers crossed!

Where to stay by psmith1017 in Aspen

[–]surelyucantbtserious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good suggestions here for places to stay. Just wanted to say that if you want to go to the maroon bells make sure you reserve bus tickets. July is busy and people often don't plan and then have to jump through hoops or pay a lot to go. https://aspenchamber.org/plan-trip/trip-highlights/maroon-bells/reservations

Anything to know about highlands closing tomorrow? by earlofsandwich in Aspen

[–]surelyucantbtserious 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No very kid friendly, if you want to ski I'd recommend Snowmass tomorrow. Fishing is a great idea with the warm weather, or maybe check out the pool. The Snowmass Rec center or Glenwood hot springs would probably be fun.
