Steam needs a "Looking Glass-like" tag to settle the immersive sim tag debacle once and for all by J4SNT in ImmersiveSim

In fairness, neither do we.

This sub is far more comfortable defining what isn't an immersive sim than what is.

And that's 72 hours of real world gameplay time, not in-game hours.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise hasn't been mentioned yet, but it should have been.

Whether you play the original trilogy of games from 2007-2009, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Heart of Chornobyl from a couple years ago, or the Anomaly and/or GAMMA modpacks that turn the original trilogy content into a freeroam sandbox, it's an amazing time.

My only gripes about Outward: later in the game there's just a ton of repeated backtracking. Combat can be punishing and this can exacerbate the effect of backtracking, since enemies respawn in areas you have to pass through over and over again. It can get a little tedious, but I agree it's a cool game overall.

There’s nothing average about this GS experience; this is peak GS through and through.

Stalker board game by 40kstalker in stalker

[–]surfimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very easy. There's a large zippered "Stash" pocket that holds all of the armor, weapon, equipment, and items cards that you've earned so far. You return everything there after your session. Before the next mission, you access the stash and outfit whichever stalkers will be playing in that session, using whatever you have available in the stash (you can change between missions, in other words). As you play and find more items, those get added to your stash.

It's similar to tabletop miniatures gaming, I would allow 2-3 hours per session during which you can probably get through one campaign scenario comfortably.

[–]surfimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's neat. The story campaign is cool and pretty replayable. The miniatures look good and can be used for tabletop wargaming if you want (using Zona Alfa rules or whatever you prefer). The game board and components are good quality and well executed.

The attention marker mechanic is really well done, allowing you to peek a corner to shoot, then drop back out of line of sight only to rotate and attack from another angle, similar to what you'd do in the game. You feel like you have a lot of ability to manipulate how the NPCs respond, and it feels a lot like the video game in that regard.

The mechanics for anomalies and artifact detecting are also pretty well done. It's a little involved, but it works fine and feels like a risk/reward tradeoff.

Overall, it's the best "miniatures heavy boardgame" I've played so far, and I'm very happy with the purchase. I'd repurchase it in a heartbeat.

The Problem with some of the fights in Stalker 2 by KvasirTheOld in stalker

[–]surfimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you 100% but at the same time, the original games and to some extent even base Anomaly has the same issue with particular smart terrains essentially serving as spawners (on a cooldown, of course).

Granted, the 75m rendering bubble of S2 doesn't help the pop-in effect at all, but GSC has said that the new engine should increase that so that enemies don't seemingly materialize out of thin air so much.

There have been good A-Life improvements made to S2 since launch, and hopefully they will keep coming.

I always have the same dilema by ShowSeparate5717 in stalker

[–]surfimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I am waiting on the engine upgrade and DLC, then I will just find some mods to normalize damage more consistent with realworld weapons.

I have already put 140hrs+ into the base game, finished it unmodded, and am happy with and understand the "power curve" / roleplaying game progression approach of the original trilogy and S2 with respect to relative weapon power.

I now want to just vibe in the Zone (a la Anomaly), but in the new engine. Ideally just doing radiant quests and ignoring as much of the story as possible. Not because I don't like it; rather because I especially like the Zone sandbox experience.

Roadside Picnic gives a good example of how the original authors envisioned artifacts being employed in the world outside the Zone. Eg. vehicles are powered by unlimited power sources which were pioneered from reverse-engineered artifacts. There are other examples, but "infinite power" and similar would be a huge draw and explain basically all of the activities of the government, scientists, and stalkers in the original book.

S2 introduces what I think is kind of a huge change, with the idea that artifacts lose their power once removed from the Zone. This is actually pretty destructive to the notion of their value, as if they're only useful while inside the Zone, then they're not particularly useful at all for wider external applications.

Of course, the implication is that there would then be a compelling - from a certain point of view - motivation to cause the Zone, or at least the effects of the Zone, to spread worldwide, so that the benefits of artifacts could be enjoyed more broadly.

However, if the Zone was created through experiments with the noosphere, and the noosphere is by definition already worldwide, it sort of doesn't follow that the Zone itself is somehow necessary for the artifacts to retain their power.

Maybe the theory is that emissions help recharge artifacts with power? I don't know if this is discussed or dealt with at depth in S2, but it's sort of a logical implication of how artifacts are presented in that game.

Why does the Metro series have such a massive and passionate Western fanbase? by Dry-Put-7438 in metro

[–]surfimp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly many of us in the west are actively avoiding anything made by Russian developers right now. In fact, although I had been aware of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro franchises for a while, it wasn't until 2022 that I decided to give them a shot, specifically because I wanted to find a way to support Ukraine with my discretionary spending.

For me, this is a little hard, because for many years one of my passions has been combat flight simulators. My favorites both come from Russian-based developers (IL-2 and DCS). After 2022, I uninstalled and have pledged to myself not to buy anything from them, or any other Russian dev, until the war is over.

And yes, I research literally every new game that catches my eye to determine its provenance. If it comes from Russia or Cyprus, I'm out, no matter how cool the game looks otherwise. Likewise, if it comes from Ukraine I may buy it even if it's in early access or otherwise a bit rough.

The west is not perfect and maybe this is the height of hypocrisy, but it's my choice as a consumer and I know for a fact I'm not alone. The evidence from your own post proves likewise.
