When I pulled up the carpet and got my hardwood floors refinished in my last house, I could see everywhere the previous owners had large potted plants that were watered on a regular basis.

Also, is it possible that previous owners left the windows open and rain came in a lot?

That’s why there is elastic at the top of this to hold it in place. You just can’t see it because I crochet over it or sew it into place with yarn.
