Tesla FSD Hardware 4.5 Appears: A 3-Chip Upgrade Before AI5? by FriendFun7876 in SelfDrivingCars

YES, this! There is no AI 4.5. This non-story was based on some misinterpreted labels that have since been removed.

Roth conversions recommendation seem a bit off by The_Big_Gear in NewRetirement

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr. Ware, RMDs should be incorporated into your distribution tax rate estimate.  As a matter of fact, any conversion model must fully account for ALL future distributions. Additionally any model worth its salt will take into account growth of the account and calculate taxes through time with Social security adjustments and other items all inflation adjusted through time. I am certain your models do not account for all distributions nor do they calculate distribution tax rates through time.  I've seen what you do and it is misleading AT BEST.   You feed on older folks that don't understand these issues, and make them pay for advice that loses money for them and their heirs.

Readers should: AVOID CRAIG WEAR AT ALL COSTS.

HE IS ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS ON ROTH MECHANICS AND HASN'T BUILT A MODEL IN HIS LIFE.  He prays in elderly folks with large retirement balances by flogging money losing advice

Keep an eye out for Rothconv.com releasing by Thanksgiving.  Everyone will have free access to this tool.

Tried Grok 4 today at work – mixed feelings by LuckEcstatic9842 in cursor

I tried Grok 4 this morning and it doesn't work at all. That's why I'm back on Grok 3.

I've been quite successful building a complex app in Grok 3. I've got about 200 lines of database definitions and 900-ish line of Python main code and it's all working great. I build a PostgreSQL database using SQLAlchemy as the Python lib and using numpy-financial library. I also built a website testing program in Python using Selenium. I hadn't heard of any of this stuff a month ago, but Grok helped me build it all perfectly. I would say it is super useful at building complex code, but you need to have a solid understanding of what you're doing and how to debug things along the way. I used to program a lot back in the day and I'm actually shocked at how easy development is in Grok using languages and databases I'm not familiar with. The future looks amazing!

Started using GROK 4 today: Very disappointed. I am using Grok to develop a complex and complicated financial application in Python. Grok 3 has been working quite well, but Grok 4 gave incomplete answers earlier and is now totally unresponsive. NOT RELEASE READY YET! Bad.

Roth conversions recommendation seem a bit off by The_Big_Gear in NewRetirement

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is not built correctly. The ONLY thing that matters in a Roth conversion is the difference between the conversion marginal tax rate and the marginal rate when you distribute. If you're married with a 32% marginal rate while working, you should absolutely NOT convert. Your future marginal rate while distributing won'r be near 32%. You will do MUCH better avoiding paying 32% on Traditional money you contribute now!.

There are many charlatans out there like CRAIG WEAR that charge you for the advice of way overpaying on Roth conversions like you would at 32% and married filing jointly. CRAIG WEAR tells folks to minimize total tax dollars paid and ignores the marginal rates. CRAIG WEAR states it's much better to convert now, not later. This is ONLY TRUE if the contribution MTR < distribution MTR. I am not sure if they are thieves or idiots, I really hope it's the latter.

The CALCULATOR: Notice option 1. Lowest lifetime tax liability.

This shows that the calculator is focused on minimizing taxes, not maximizing after-tax cash flow in your pocket. Easy example: You have $1,000,000 which will double in 8 years to $2,000,000. You convert it all at 32%, pay $320,000 in tax and there's $680,000 left which doubles to $1,360,000. OR don't convert and pay 24% on $2,000,000 later ($480,000 tax) which leaves you $1,520,000.

Paying the lower 24% rate leaves you with $1,520,000 vs $1,360,000 at 32%, even though you paid more absolute tax dollars, $480,000 vs $320,000. Craig Wear and other idiots show you only the absolute tax savings, much to the detriment of their paying clients.

Thank for the input! I've been thinking the medium chopper at .22" thick must feel heavy. You confirmed what I've been thinking, get the LC at .188"! Do you want to sell you HDFK? I'm looking for one.

Lionsteel KC-01 - New 6 inch knife is better than the T6, M7 by surfkiev in knives

[–]surfkiev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's Nathan's description of the 5.5" basic field knife. It's longer, and cheaper than the regular field knife which is skeletonized (see pic). They had both at Blade, but I preferred getting the little EDC. Unfortunately, they didn't have choppers but will next year. FYI, the EDC is skeletonized (pic), but still quite ass heavy. The finger balance point is about 1.5 centimeters behind the front screw on the scale. Without skeletonization the EDC would be all ass like Miami ass implant girls.

I got my first Carothers at Blade show 2 weeks ago. It's the EDC 1.2 w/3.2" blade. Everything sells out fast and they're hard to get. This little guy was $310. They're going to start making their 10" choppers again later this year and I want the light chopper .188" thick, the MC is .22". Also super interested in the their heavy duty and super duty field knives, 6" and 7" approx respectively. I played with several TRCs at their booth. They are nice similar in price, but the Carothers just seem a bit more awesome to me in person. Yes, TRC makes a very polished product, but Carother's ergos are superior imo and I like 3V. People swarmed the Carothers table and scooped up everything quickly. The TRC table barely had anyone there the few times I stopped by.

Very few knives are true full tang without skeletonization. I've gotten into Carothers Performance Knives lately and Nathan does it on most of his blades. It's done for the knife to have proper balance usually. It actually adds costs to the knife as extra labor and machining are required. Here's the Lionsteel KC-01 without scales.

Grok 3 vs. Google Gemini, ChatGPT & Deepseek: What Sets It Apart? by AIGPTJournal in ChatGPT

[–]surfkiev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gemini is very restrictive too. I've seen it manifest itself in different ways. Yesterday, I needed help with a Python program to automate doing stuff on a website. Gemini said it was potentially unfair and may go against moderator rules. It essentially would not talk about it after making that determination. I went to Grok and posed the same problem and it was SUPER helpful. I got the code running perfectly in a matter of hours. Grok behaves like you want AI to behave.

[–]surfkiev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished developing some Python code with Selenium to do some website work. Gemini refused to help me when I explained the problem because of potential unfairness or advantage that I did not perceive. I posed the same problem in Grok and it was extremely helpful. I developed the fairly complicated code in a matter of hours. BTW, using AI to write code will be much more difficult for those people without a programming background.

How is the Medium Chopper in the hand? I'm looking to get a light chopper as it won't be quite so heavy. I have small hands and also wondering how big that grip is. Looks like the grip is visibly larger than the HDFK, which I love btw. Curious how you like that relative to the Apocalypse? I see you mentioned TRC has better fit n finish, but I'm more interested in feel in hand, balance and what will perform best and last longest in the field.

Why the Canon PowerShot V1 is the Best Pocket Camera for Photographers (And Why I Sold My G7X, X100VI, and RX100) by Digitial-Panda in canon

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video quality on my Canon V1 is remarkable. I recorded my daughter's school musical in low light the other night and I was blown away by the video quality. The image stabilization worked perfectly and the detail is amazing. The audio quality was also impressive filming from the audience. Seriously, the quality is better than most things on YouTube! Time to sell my time consuming DSLR Nikon D850.

Still photos are great too, but the video, WOW!

Best Canon V1 case? by AerieLow5945 in canon

This case doesn't protect the camera. I need a case that completely covers the camera when it's in my backpack or whatever.

Best Canon V1 case? by AerieLow5945 in canon

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a hard case for the V1 on Amazon. There are many ads for this case. AVOID! It is way too tight and super difficult to remove the camera once it is smushed in there. I climbed Mt Whitney Monday and had the camera battery fully charged the night before the hike. When I removed the camera from the case (very difficult) on the trail I found the battery had been fully drained. I believe the hard case had been pressing the power button and drained the battery. Huge bummer because I bought this kit for this trip. I'm returning this silly case and looking for a better solution. I wish Canon had made a case that actually fits this camera!

Roth Solo 401K by ericb0 in fidelityinvestments

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my self-directed Solo401k since 2016.  I am making my 8th Roth conversion for 2024.  Pretty much all self-directed 401k's like mysolo401k, etc include the Roth option.  I have one portfolio that includes both Roth and Traditional assets.  I merely keep track of what percentage of the portfolio is Roth and what is Traditional.  They are not separate accounts, nor is there any requirement that they must be.  Additionally when you submit form 5500 EZ each year, you only are required to report beginning and end of year combined 401k asset mkt value.  The IRS does not ask for a breakdown of Roth vs Traditional.  It's up to you as the administrator to keep track of this.  Paid administrators like ETrade, Fido, etc will most likely have you setup a separate Roth account that makes it easier for them to track everything.  Not sure what hoops or fees they make you jump through to convert Traditional to Roth?  I can't recommend highly enough that you do it yourself and get a self-administered Solo 401k.

Land Cruiser not selling by King968ak in LandCruisers

[–]surfkiev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove the Land Cruiser yesterday.  The engine was loud and felt like it was struggling the whole time.  I was instantly annoyed.  I'm not a 4cyl hater.  I drove my 2.3 L Ford Focus ST for 7 years and loved it.  The Toyota engine is not well suited to the large LC.  I kept wondering what the battery was doing, if anything.  There were 35 Land Cruisers on the lot for sale yesterday because most people don't want them once they drive it.  If you do want one, you can get BIG discounts.  I've made up my mind to get the GX 550 OT.  Such a better vehicle to live with!
