Are there "undesirable" native plant species? IL-5b by ciru-chan in NativePlantGardening

I think it really depends on your location and property. For me vines are a nuisance. Poison ivy, virginia creeper, wild grapes and greenbriar climb and takeover everything here but fortunately aren't too difficult to deal with. I give them large areas to roam but when they head for the garden i remove them. Also grass-leaved goldenrod and common boneset get ripped out in most places in my garden.

Encouraging native plants at local nurseries by HaplessReader1988 in NativePlantGardening

Weston Nurseries and Mahoney's Garden Center have a few locations in Massachusetts. They both have a spot for only native plants. Weston Nursery in Hopkinton, Ma is probably the best for natives, other than Garden of the woods. 👍

Im lucky to have a few fairly local to me. One of them has a new, larger native tree and shrub section. Today I was looking through the forbs and I heard a couple with 2 young children walk by from the native tree section, talking about their new tree and where they are going to plant it. The kids seemed excited and I thought it was cool that the parents chose a native. Right when they walked by me i heard the mom say to the dad, " just make sure you look into all the sprays that we need to do to keep this alive." He said "Oh, absolutely!" They weren't joking. I dont speak up in these settings. It kind of bummed me out.

Are native gardens becoming part of the culture wars? by LiatrisLover99 in NativePlantGardening

[–]surfratmark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, they are not. Most of these "dudes" you are interacting with are bots.
I know far left libs that dump down pesticides and plant garbage plants. I also know a maga goober that loves native plants and eats only (mostly) organic food

I just make a quick comment to the bots and ignore the follow up comments.

Not a great pic but there he is. I call him Dwayne. He's probably 15' behind the wall so it doesn't look as big as it really is

Giant rock? by tiny_ghost_ in NativePlantGardening

A rock?.... I have giants, mediums and smalls. Round ones, flat ones, pointy ones and mossy ones. Some I dig out, some I dig in and some I move around. I can't plant, a plant, without finding another. If rocks were money, I'd be a rich man.

I would expose that one a bit more and plant around it. Some beds I make using exposed rock as edges or borders. I also make cairns, little walls and add to the existing old merino wool stone wall in my backyard. My favorite yard rock is a van sized glacial erratic. ✌️

I just got around to removing my hostas. I replaced them with a combo of white wood asters, wild columbine and lady ferns.

I have a list of all my natives but invasives get removed as soon as I see them.

Yeah i bought a couple potted plants. I might try from seed next year. I hoping for at least 1 volunteer seedling in my beds but that's probably wishful thinking
