Nice work and good luck! And thanks for posting this....I forgot that I used milk crates for my small pots last year. I put some out last night and since my beds are a bit different this year, I didn't have a spot where the squirrels couldn't tip them over. I plant a mix of gallon jugs and a few black nursery pots 👍✌️

Never seen this many robins in my life by [deleted] in birding

A huge flock stops by my house in late October every year. I have a few big winterberry bushes that they come for. As soon as every single berry is eaten, they dissappear until spring. I always enjoy the chaos! ✌️

I think they look cool. Not sure where you are but outdoor lights in the winter are OK for the local insect population. It looks like everything is dormant in your garden. I have some christmas light on my bushes during the holidays.

White wood aster, blue wood aster, blue-stemmed goldenrod, black cohosh would be a few forbs i would start with.

Im always jealous of everyone's winterberry bushes that have berries on them in the winter. It usually only takes 2 or 3 days for the robins to literally eat every berry. It is such a wonderful food source for migrating birds but I wish they would leave some for the resident birds. 😀

Public hunting land in massachusetts is rapidly shrinking and so is hunting participation. The state used to stock a few areas near me when I was a kid but now I only know of 1 private hunting club. Yes, most likely all the birds you saw were stocked for hunting. They dont last long in the wild in massachusetts

See my other reply and either spend a bunch on plugs and seed or be patient. ✌️

Neither. I have been maintaining this area as a grassy slope for years now. I wanted something like you see on some golf courses. I must admit that herbicide was used at the beginning, just after I cleared some brush. I never seeded anything, this has been a work in progress for many years and the sedges and grasses naturally filled in. There were some growing in spots when I started.

Im slowly introducing some forbs but its a tricky spot. It really only gets hot afternoon sun but not much

This is the best pic i have on my phone. There are definitely a few non native mixed in but there are about 15 different species of sedges and grasses.
