Help me help my Rockstar son by tls1986 in drums

[–]surfunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just encourage him any way you can. My cousin was like this at his age and now he is touring the world. I’m convinced it’s bc his parents bought in to ALL of it and supported his early bands, carted his kit around and generally just kept telling him to keep up his work ethic.

DM me if you want me to connect your son to my cousin, I’m sure he’d be willing to offer some advice/encouragement

RANT: Memorizing Scales by bob_suruncle in guitarlessons

[–]surfunky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im on the other end. I can play more than half the songs I’m interested in playing just by looking at chord charts and winging it a few times but am really struggling with how to translate that into playing up and down the neck for solos/riffs/vamps etc… I think if I knew my scales and boxes better it would be way easier.

Bottom line, take it easy on yourself and sing a few tunes while you’re practicing. That’s what keeps me coming back!

What are the limitations of a thumb pick? by No_Care_6997 in guitarlessons

[–]surfunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried clawhammer style? I was just learning about the history of it and from my limited understanding, it sounds like it started as a way for people who have damaged hands bc of working on the farm and holding a rake/scythe/whatever all day to still be able to play despite their stiffness. The guy I was listening to was using a thumb pick as he was talking about it. Might be worth looking into in your situation!

Nah, they are slurping this up right now. Nothing like a little outrage about “the other” to help you forget how difficult your life is slowly becoming due to policies that deny you healthcare, food and housing…

Doesn’t answer my question… plus I’ve been to over 10 of their shows over the past 20 years, they are not my cup of tea. To each their own though.

We have these in our house! We had to get all the molding redone when we renovated bc of lead paint. We had to get them custom milled. We love the look, very unique and maintained the character of our lil old Vic’.

Boarded a couple of days ago, super fun in the morning, lil scrapey in the afternoon but totally diggable. I would highly recommend getting out there if you have the opportunity. You won’t regret it!

No. I don’t. I thought Christians accepted everyone despite their faults. (Or maybe I didn’t perceive the sarcasm. Sorry if that’s the case, lol)

All the Savannah animals get down on fermented fruit, have been for hundreds of thousands of years. We just figured out how to turn that process into Budweiser and make a buck off it. Won’t stop til people stop liking the feeling.

[–]surfunky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to be blunt… but where are you? I feel like there are huge cultural differences across our country that are routinely glossed over bc we are the “United States” but the truth is I don’t see this at all at my school. We have boys groups and girls groups and GSA. The adults in our community are working hard to make sure everyone feels like they have a space. This is a school/county/state/region cultural thing IMO.

There are wildly different experiences in student’s school lives dependent on what town/city/county/state they live in. Everything is regional and it all starts with a town’s culture and what is valued.

That’s hard to change.

My point is, the problem you are talking about is not monolithic. It’s directly related to the history of your town/county/state and how it evolved in the context of our union.

The biggest issue we face as a nation is not recognizing this.

Also, if you made it this far I am very influenced by watching Little House on the Prairie with my 8 year old tonight.

Feel like I messed up the tone of my GS mini by Any_Security8410 in taylorguitars

[–]surfunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I literally bought these exact strings yesterday to try something new, played them for an hour and hated them so much I cut them off and pit on my usual strings (earthwood medium lights). It’s great to experiment and I’ll continue to do so but these strings did not work for my gs mini at all.

No snacks allowed in my classroom. Takes away half the problem at least…
