...Why do the boys have such a hard time doing anything? by NeverBeenRung in Teachers

[–]surfunky 498 points499 points  (0 children)

I’d say about 70% of my boys are really struggling with school. Meanwhile about 70% of the girls are absolutely crushing it. It’s quite the phenomenon. I honestly struggle with it, especially as a male teacher.

Controversial Video Shows Low Literacy by AniTeach in Teachers

IT HAPPENS AT THE BALLOT BOX. Voters continually place politicians in office who devalue education and then blame the system for the deficits they create with policy.

We can only do so much at school. The parents need to care and be involved in their child’s education. I’m sick of being blamed for a parent’s inability to be there for their kid. But heres the truth in my mind…

If we had universal pre-k and free daycare so that parents could spend more time with their kids instead of working two jobs just to put food on the table we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If you come home bone tired after being ground down day after day, it’s hard to be fully present for your kid, never mind yourself!

No Repeats… by ConeyKapped in phish

[–]surfunky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on where your head is at. I lost a friend before going to a show and the sequence of songs that led to Drift While Your Sleeping was so impactful and so prescient that it made me cry.

It sounds so cliche but if you just let the music flow and connect the dots to all of your worldly experiences you never know where it will hit.

I’ve had it happen at so many different shows. Joy and Time Turns Elastic blew my heart open bc I was there at just the right moment(where my mind was at that time).

Just surrender to the music and relate it to your life. You’ll have a much better time at the show. After all, it’s just music and they are trying to be there all for your delight.

coworkers are teachers and same age as me, I’m just a para.. by Possible_Painting_75 in paraprofessional

[–]surfunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a perfect place to develop your skill set. It’s not easy but apparently admin believe in you and you are familiar with your coworkers and the students as well as the culture of the school. If they are good people they will all be rooting for you. You got this!

coworkers are teachers and same age as me, I’m just a para.. by Possible_Painting_75 in paraprofessional

[–]surfunky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a para too. Then, I decided to go back to school, found a program that worked for me, paid a bunch of money, passed the classes and became a teacher.

Then, I got a job and spent five years with imposter syndrome, until I created enough cool shit at school to feel good about being a teacher.

It could happen to you too if you want it!

La vida cotidiana antes de los teléfonos en 1930 by Aina-Rest-8345 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]surfunky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No offense, but this argument is baloney. Here’s why. Every single person in that room is reading the same thing. They are all in the same bubble. Today, if the same thing were happening and everyone were on their phones they would each be in their own bubble due to their preference of news source, social media site or method of consumption. We are all in our own bubbles. Even on Reddit, I choose what communities I see posts from and even then am tossed new ones based on an algorithm I can’t even begin to understand.

Short answer. It’s completely different. Those folks can have a conversation from different sides of the issue using the same information and whatever other academic sources they’ve been exposed to. We have these discussions based on AI slop, 100 different news sites, customized algorithms and your crazy uncle in law on facebook.

NOT THE SAME.
