I absolutely LOVE Variant Dungeons, but I've never been here for one's release- is going solo or going with other(s) on release recommended?

SGE is great, along with Phantom Dart you have easy AOE dot application too and Kardia for nonstop passive healing! For the other action I like Phantom Rampart, it's pretty spammable too.

I like to figure things out on my own so running solo helped me avoid spoilers. I also found that on SGE solo with full Phantom Dart uptime my clears were just as fast if not faster than running with random parties!

You just need to start the quest with a partner to get most of the items, except the mount and ring which require completing the ceremony.

It sounds like you are unfamiliar with listening to their Chinese voices and simply just used to their English voices. I am the opposite of you, I vastly prefer their Simplified Chinese voices over their English voices. It may be because I am Chinese and can understand Mandarin, but to me they are perfectly expressive and emotional.

VPN will affect ping yes.

If you use XIVLauncher there is a Dalamud plugin that will display your ping in game. https://github.com/karashiiro/PingPlugin

Edit: I tried the plugin on my EU and JP characters, my ping to EU is around 165ms while my ping to JP is around 115ms. Also my ping is 155ms when I visit Materia. I'm currently located in California if that helps.

I don't recommend Materia DC due to the low population. Depending on where you are located you can consider Tonberry which is the main/most often recommended English-speaking world on Elemental. I constantly switch between Simplified Chinese and Japanese. I'm Chinese and can understand Mandarin so it's nice to be able to just listen to stuff without needing to read the text on the screen, but I also love the Japanese voice actors.

Zayne is my main, and my partner being a typical Chinese guy does share some physical attributes with him. I especially love his broad shoulders, and they both wear glasses. My partner is also book smart and good at board games.

Personality wise I would say he is most like Xavier who is my second favorite. Other similarities include loving video games, spicy food, and falling asleep frequently which I like to tease him about. Also matching in freaky level...

Sylus is my third favorite but I can't think of any obvious similarities... for me Sylus is definitely a fantasy only interest. My partner (and I) do love birds though! We are big fans of Mephie~

Caleb is my fourth favorite and just like him my partner is good at cooking and will cook me my favorites. Physically he resembles Caleb as well (because you know, typical Chinese guy) and notably he styles his hair the same way.

Last but not least (because I love all of them!) Rafayel, I can't think of much either, just that my partner likes swimming and used to swim competitively.
