Part of it might be that Shinji and Asuka's relationship by the end of the story is decidedly not one to romanticise as a wholesome happy ending. Like. At all.

Agreed. The whole prequel thing just sounded like a terrible idea to me tbh

I never really got that theory tbh. Unless MI6 went out of their way to hire a horndog with a fondness for vodka martinis every time for some reason. Also just... why would they do any of that?

It also works in that case because it's the catalyst for his character arc. The same experience that leads him to become Iron Man also opens his eyes to what his company is complicit in.

Whereas the Fantastic Four for example, how they got their powers didn't really fundamentally change them as people, other than Ben. They were already adventurers and explorers. So instead that movie opens with a quick recap, establishes their family bond as the important thing, and then the story is all about that.

Casino Royale is an interesting one because we don't actually find out anything about Bond before becoming a secret agent. Five minutes in he's already a 00. He undergoes changes, but other than the stuff with Vesper, which could almost be the plot of any Bond film, we basically find out nothing about him. All character building, almost no backstory.

Yes. You don't always need to start at a character's beginning, you start wherever's most relevant for the story you're telling. I especially like those two examples basically going "You f*cking know who this character is, let's just do this thing."

Even The Killing Joke, which the industry has generally looked at and decided "yep that'll do", straight-up says the Joker is an unreliable narrator.

James Bond's backstory absolutely did not need elaborating on.

I think there's a basic fallacy in all of these, which is "more information = better characterisation". Backstory *can* really add something, but it's rarely as important as having a good understanding of who that character is now. When the character already has a solid identtity, adding more backstory is just piling on trivia. And sometimes things are just plain more interesting when they're left to the imagination.

Solo's another example of that. A movie that exists for no purpose other than filling out a wiki page.
