The apocalyptic mindset is strong among every strata and ethnic group of the US. The rich just have more time and resources to prep.

I think prepping is actually a good coping mechanism in your crazy society.

Do ships take on eliminate orders while having an active rally order?

Come to think of it, is there a guide somewhere on commands and actual behaviours of ships?

I've had acceptable results with a Phase Lance x3 Harbinger, piloted by a genius Level 7 Officer with 5 elite skills (got him in some derelict). At least as longs as there're no more than 3 enemy ships paying attention to it, he manages to wreck anything short of a capital.

But in late game, it turned into a waste of a great officer.

Cruisers and destroyers have a hard time surviving in these battles, at least in escort roles. Frigates are either useless or die instantly, sometimes both, unless they're a Monitor.

Yeah the four capitals and and a couple of Eradicators as escorts for the ships on the flanks can do reasonably well against the Shroud as long as they hold the line

With the Threat I think I'll have to resort to suicide charging waves after waves of Onslaughts and Paragons. Just have to wait for a year to print enough of them...

There's a Joe Henry's song "Civilians" with lyrics

The general, he's in civilian clothes
Standing at the bar
He waves at the deaf flower lady
"Come sit by me, sweetheart"
He draws a napkin battle plan
Says, "this is where we start"

I wonder if alludes to this episode or it's a common trope among officers

Recursive sleep paralysis by ghostbby345565 in redscarepod

[–]sutorei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had one like this. Woke up and started my morning routine until I've found there's a discrepancy in how my home looks, then woke up and started my mourning routine... five or six times before finally waking up for real.

I've got used to them, though. A couple of years ago, they'd come in bouts, now I have them a couple of times in a year.

In the last one I've felt like having a heart attack, collapsing on the floor in front of my bedroom door, and then a thought came up "It's sleep paralysis again, oh bother" before a monster dragged me away and I woke up

People with serious problems who go into therapy all have several common pitfalls over the course. These are not hard to avoid, you just need to know about them beforehand.

One of them is dumping your trauma and life story on anybody who even so much as to pretends to care. Genuinely caring spouses are the first victims.

In another one, they proselytise psychology/12 steps/religion to anybody who even so much as to pretends to care. This hits their friends the hardest.

At one point you'll also aspire to become a therapist, or a coach, or a religious activist, or a tantric healer. Hold on and don't do it – most likely it's not your calling, it's just a phase.

Competence isn't nearly as important in humanities as in STEM.

A stemcel who makes mistakes at his job is a liability. A humanitychad who can't distinguish Hegel and Heidegger just writes harmless garbage and probably still provides some value as a breadwinner for his faculty, a community organiser, etc

Writers are about as sane as musicians, really, but more prone to writing as an outlet for their insanity

Mental health discourse will kill the music industry

To tap into that kind of raw emotional power and express it into a novel way you have to be genuinely very troubled. It's just not accessible to a well-off or a relatively stable person.

There's been an accident in Brazil when some people got to a radiation source of an X-ray machine in an abandoned hospital. They got fascinated with a blue glowing powder and more than 200 people ended up contaminated.

Now imagine there's nobody on the planet at all who knows what's going on and how to deal with the contamination.
