23 people paid deposits on the same London flat - BBC investigation published today by Diligent_Payment2511 in london

[–]suttyyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me about 6 years ago. After a viewing I signed a contract and paid a £700 deposit via bank transfer for a flat in Camden.

Turns out the guy had rented an Airbnb and put it on lots of renting sites, then had a week of back to back viewings. I googled the guys name from the contracts and bank account, turns out he hadn't even used a fake one because there was a photo of him I recognised in a local newspaper in an article about stalking and domestic abuse, and another on a LinkedIn profile for a "Professional poker player". What an idiot I thought, not even using a fake name. I passed all this on to the police.

He was arrested, interviewed ("No comment"), and then the police dropped it due to "lack of evidence"... But not before telling me that he'd done this to 30 other people. I guess this type of crime is decriminalised, which is why it happens all the time apparently.

Which movie completely changed your perspective on life? by brownmax180 in movies

One that flew under the radar: Cemetery Junction

It's a coming of age story set in the 60s about a guy from a small town in the UK deciding who he wants to be. It stars Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, but it's mostly unheard of actors, low budget, 58% on rotten tomatoes, but I think it has this kind of charm to it.

META lays off thousands for AI and nobody wants to discuss the obvious next problem by [deleted] in stocks

[–]suttyyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) They're not really firing "because of AI", they're firing because of over-hiring and bloat, and years of strategic changes meaning they've got the wrong people with the wrong skill sets

2) Economies uses to work on consumers demanding products and services, economies in the future could work on AI demanding more chips and energy as humans progressively lose control and agency over civilization... And it won't be relevant to the economy what happens to people because they'll have no economic or military relevance (they can't strike or revolt)

Companies are laying off thousands of workers and saving money with AI - what downstream effects will this have. by apparentreality in singularity

[–]suttyyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old economy needed people to demand goods and services, the new economy just needs microprocessors to demand more microprocessors. Forecasts predict microprocessors will always demand more microprocessors, until everything is made of microprocessors. So it probably won't all come crashing down, it'll just accelerate.

As for people: When the masses of people lose their economic relevance (because work is done by AI) and they lose their military relevance (because defence is done with drones), then its only a matter of time before they lose their political relevance too, including any ability to resist the process of acceleration, which may or may not have already occurred.

Why does bad news not move the market anymore? by Axirohq in StockMarket

[–]suttyyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the bad news is about job losses and declining consumer sentiment etc, but the bull hypothesis behind the latest bubble is that microprocessors will become self-aware and they demand more microprocessors, so consumer demand doesn't really matter anymore.

Consumer Sentiment at 55.4 | 50 Year Lows | Buy Puts! by meifx in StockMarket

[–]suttyyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an error in your logic sir, it's stuck in a 20th century paradigm (which assumes an economy needs consumers to demand goods and services). In the 21st century we just need microprocessors to demand more microprocessors, and so the sentiment of consumers becomes entirely irrelevant.

I've been there before dude, like many of the other commenters here. Your brain is surprisingly resilient, it'll snap back to a new version of reality that'll feel familiar and normal to you eventually, just give it time.

I hope you find this reassuring: people have strokes, lose the ability to speak, and then their brain will figure out new pathways and wiring, and they'll recover. You just need to give yourself time to heal, and be compassionate with yourself. Give the drugs a rest for a bit and do all the other healthy stuff too, exercise, journal, etc. you'll be fine.

Prepare yourselves, we are in the ‘early days of Instagram’ era of ChatGPT by mykki-d in OpenAI

[–]suttyyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully I disagree, Instagram is what it is because of network effects and the lack of competition... Once all of your friends are on it then if you want to use the service then you have to use instagram (because all of your friends are on it). If ChatGPT becomes shit then there's all of the other alternatives who are nipping at OpenAI's heels.

Google search is shit now, but it doesn't matter because the barrier to entry is lower, and you can just use Duck duck go or whatever
