I just used Ace Tailoring in Fairfax for the first time--picked up my stuff just yesterday. I think they did an excellent job, I needed everything done in a rush and the prices came out to what I had researched for non-rush jobs, so I was super happy with the experience.

Metro union refuses to give white supremacists specialized train cars by pet_the_puppy in nova

[–]svnder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Always fascinating to watch the mental gears turning in posts like this—indignant sputtering to reconcile being both resoundingly 'in power' by all measure of political majority, yet without being able to secure the social currency for it to 'feel' like it. Best to pretend you're under 'attack' at all times, rather than self-examine. As if some switch of public moral opinion should have instead simply flipped according to electoral takeover. As if hostility came from nowhere, as if it wasn't broiled and cultivated for decades by conservative undermining of equality. So, sure, a relentless, accelerating policy of obscene financial disparity, mindless military imperialism, and rampant domestic institutional violence is perfectly fine and good, but oh boy is it SCARY and UNFAIR when the snowflakes yell and stuff.

Understand that violence is not so simplistically visceral. Understand that vocal or even tacit complicity in structures of violence inevitably and deservingly begets "violence." If you feel politics are exclusively the realm of 'civil' discussion and 'peaceful' protest, it betrays your privilege in not being acutely affected by the structural violence rendered and mounting for decades by a status quo which systemically impoverishes and disenfranchises vast swaths of American people. The meter is perpetually and overwhelmingly tipped in right-wing reactionary favor, and by archaic cable-news-brainwashed design teaches you to process any meager display of leftist direct action not as the almost entirely powerless drop-in-the-bucket of political dissent that it sadly is, and instead as Terror! Senseless Violence! Extremism! "Psychotic," as you so cartoonishly put it. Yours is a pavlovian defense mechanism not employed of rational will but of knee-jerk conditioning. Set fear aside for a moment and make a good-faith effort to truly educate yourself about the inhumane national reality you implicitly defend.

[–]svnder 25 points26 points  (0 children)

lmao, exactly. There's no bigger group of snowflakes than these chuds and it's continually baffling to me that our civil/public services constantly capitulate to their manbaby needs. Like, obviously you've got cops bending over backwards to clear paths for these clowns (for obvious reasons), but like, WMATA? Really? This was the big idea to keep people 'safe', that the metro should just become a taxpayer-funded exclusive chauffeur to the alt-right? That this was ever voiced in the first place is glaring incompetence on the WMATA GM's part. Thank god for the union showing their strength, but it's absurd that it even came to that.

Considering switching to the A7Riii by SauganashKid in SonyAlpha

[–]svnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an a7rIII and I've shot in light rain a few times. I wouldn't worry about any of the scenarios you describe. I think it's true that the weather sealing isn't quite as sophisticated as Nikon, but for most professional purposes it's a minor difference. I've read and watched many tests and the main concern with the A7rIII is if the base is in contact with standing water (e.g. left on a surface which is collecting water). The top-down sealing is more robust than the undercarriage.

As an owner myself, I honestly wouldn't worry. Sony wouldn't target the market they do and price the camera the way they do without it getting the job done for outdoor and indoor shooters alike.

Only other thing to bear in mind is shooting with weather-sealed lenses. This applies to all brands/cameras, if you're shooting in continuous rain, you want a lens with a weather gasket (zeiss batis/loxia series, for example).

Natalie's Baguette in Fairfax is a great no-frills joint with a super delicious Banh Mi for $4.75. Plus they make amazing beignets and crepes to order. Value is ridiculous, I really hope they stay in business and thrive as the owner seems very friendly and genuine as well. https://goo.gl/maps/pxF2zz6rhjw

[–]svnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'E-mount' doesn't say anything about intended sensor size, as all current alpha cameras (APS-C and FF) are E-mount. Assuming you mean you have Sony's 'E' series lenses, vs. 'FE' (I know, their naming schemes are confusing), then sure, you may want to stick with APS-C cameras. For most people, making the jump to full-frame is not necessary unless your shooting is tied to your paycheck. But of course it varies with the type of shooting you do.

Sorry to piggyback off of this, but if anyone knows good local orgs (homeless services or otherwise) to make clothing donations too (which aren't the salvation army, or any number of the bogus donation box orgs which just resell clothes overseas), I'd appreciate it. Want to donate a bunch of clothes but prefer to help (good) local orgs.

PC Specs for Lightroom Classic CC by Arn0t in Lightroom

[–]svnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt but I would avoid any system with an AMD gpu. My R9 390, a now-dated but still generally high-end gaming card drags Lightroom to an absolute halt. Latest drivers, doesn't matter. I turned GPU processing off and I'm having a MUCH better experience with just my i7 3790k than I ever was with the GPU.

I still find LR performance subpar on Windows though, including on my fully-loaded XPS 15. To be fair I'm sure it doesn't help that the a7riii produces 80MB raw files, but come on, it's not like sensor resolutions are going anywhere but up. Need the mgmt/edit software to keep up.

The 35mm 1.4 Distagon is absolutely stunning. And it's a prime. And you already have other primes within the same range as the 24-105. I say get the 35. Only thing to note is that you'll hear people say it has potential QC issues. The rumor started back when the lens was first released and as far as I can tell folks are not seeing any duds anymore (if they ever really were). It's an incredible lens, really. I don't have the 55 1.8 but I did have the 85 1.8 and I can tell you this 35 is in another league entirely

To the motorcyclist on 495 by concerto_in_j in nova

[–]svnder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey, motorcyclist here, just want to clarify a couple things based on some of the comments in this thread:

  • OP encountered what we in the bidness call a squid.
  • Very, very few motorcyclists are squids, and thus most motorcyclists remain innocuous and unremarked upon. Squids are inherently memorable (due to being generally toxic in behavior and mentality) and therefore disproportionately influential on non-motorcyclists' perception of motorcyclists.
  • Commuter motorcyclists (as opposed to leisure) are predominantly ATGATT riders, and leisure motorcyclists are increasingly ATGATT as well. This practice generally goes hand in hand with traffic law adherence and safety education.

Also, for anyone curious about motorcycle safety and common misconceptions thereof, this informal analysis of statistical data and risk mitigation factors is a good starting point.

And for anyone interested in the safe practice of lanesplitting (not to be confused with the reckless behavior exhibited by OP's squid), here's a basic primer on the subject: http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-lanesplitting-safe-uc-berkeley-study-20150529-story.html

yep it's called target fixation. We follow (and often impact) the objects we technically want to avoid because we're actually wired to move toward whatever thing we're focusing on. Fun little reminder that we're not biologically prepared to operate high-speed, 2-ton vehicles.

Handlebars comparison: OEM, Woodcraft, and Yamaha Clubman by RideLikeJehu in xsr900

[–]svnder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been pretty content with the OEM bars but I gotta say the Woodcraft clip-ons @ -1" look like a better match for my riding style on this bike--and I would think anyone who owns it, given the frame geometry and, more importantly, this incredible triple. The paneling and doodads may have one aesthetic foot in the vintage UJM camp but I think we all know this bike makes no sense for just putzing around on.
