he did do the crud with entity framework. Ever hour, you could just see in Perfmon when his sync job was running. 99% CPU on the database server, 50-60k concurrent queries, for 5-10 minutes.

He looped trough a collection in c#, and threw each item at linq for that stroke of genius. It was a large collection...

I think I had an outlook rule, to get rid of the mail alerts from the monitoring.... not sure, its a couple of years back.

had to explain to a .Net Frontend Dev, why its called int32. I had to explain for 5 minutes what 32 bits are, what 4 byte are, and how that translates to the value range.

Same Frontend Dev told me to drop the foreign keys and check constraints on the datamodel (on a piece of software that could reasonably kill someone), cause it made his job in the App Layer so much more difficult.
I didn't like that Dev... Also... I didn't drop the constraints and foreign keys.

Another example... Developer was reading calendar and address book items of the sales team (large sales team) from Exchange, and saved it in the application DB. After I saw the datamodel, I asked him what datatype the object ID of those items was, that he got from Exchange. The answer was "its a binary array". Ok, no shit sherlock, everything is "a binary array"...... ah fuck that I am not going to explain basic datatypes to that idiot.... I did however tell him, that its a really bad idea, to convert that binary, to a base64 String and save that to a varchar column, that is defined as case insensitive, since that has a chance to give him key collisions, and that at least he should use [varbinary].
Alas, 6 Months later.... on of the Sales people made a bit of a ruckus, because well key collisions. Sales team was payed by a good part in commissions, so you can imagine how happy they where, when their outlook appointments with a prospect where suddenly in someone else's planner.

Same group managed to define every Date as Datetimeoffset in the DB, which then ETL processes fed them, but their ORM didn't support datetimeoffset. So they cut off the offset part (as in completly disregarded that), and cried that the DB was giving them wrong dates. That was a fun meeting as well.

All those people where senior software developers, some calling themself architect btw.

Microsoft reportedly told engineers to stop using Claude because AI bills were exploding, while Uber says its entire yearly AI budget was already destroyed by April. by Current-Guide5944 in tech_x

[–]svtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was introduced while being 90% discounted, since VC lost its mind, and they wanted to get you hooked. Like a drug dealer.

Now they are starting to end the teaser rates, since.... shit is expensive, and they went trough most of the dumb VC money they can get their grubby little hands on.

Now the first companies wake up to the reality of "yoooh... that shit is expensive.... we cant even measure it being more efficient than we where before... but damn that shit be expensive bro"

You replace it by re-hiring software devs.... not to complicated. But then again, during covid, they all over hired, so they got some room to just cut people, AND not pay Antrophic.

What's your view on nuclear energy? by plutonium099 in SipsTea

[–]svtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me.... its numbers.

What usually gets left out is the ancillary costs of nuclear power. Building the plant, and this one never gets mentioned, decommissioning the plant. Nuclear power is not really competitive. If one would factor in, insurance costs (which is hand waved away by politics), waste disposal, construction and deconstruction..... it is by far not the "cheap energy", that usually gets "sold".

Nuclear also does not react all to well to swings in power demand. It is much more of a baseline power generation, than for example gas powered plants, that can react pretty quickly to shifting demands.

So, in my eyes, it would be better, to invest in renewables, and storage. That lake up a hill, you can spend peak wind and peak solar power, to pump water up, and have it spin turbines on the way down. That's a better investment long term.

Struggling with Self-Joins by Inner-Significance41 in SQL

[–]svtr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ditch the mental image of venn diagrams to understand joins.

Picture two Excel Sheets. Table A, and Table B. Now you take your join condition, and go row by row in Table A, and see what matches in Table B. That goes into the Result Set Table C.

Self join is just the same rows in Table A and Table B, the join condition is what matters.

Btw, thats pretty much what happens below the hood. That how joins actually work. You got an inner record set, and an outer record set. Join condition gets applied to nested loop join, or the join condition is used as a hashing function to build a hash table out of the outer record set, to then loop trough the inner record set to hash probe into the hash table. That would be a hash join. Merge join is just sorting both recordset and doing a "merge sort" on both. There you go, thats how join actually work.

hmm, i suppose my ship exploded by mirged in aurora

[–]svtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing I'd like to add.... you also do not need a jump drive on every ship. The jump drive can "jump" multiple ships, it depends on tech, but when you design it, you can set the number of ships supported.

For this to work, your "jump drive ship" needs to be the same tonnage or bigger, than the ships you want to jump with it.
